HOT YOUNG CHICKS in Asuncion!!! again

shari - 3-15-2009 at 07:28 PM

these chicks are really noisy, they just wont shut up already!
OK, so I have a question about young chicks...(stay out of this fishbuck)...do you have to take em out of the coop? Juan says the chickens will henpeck them to death...I didnt' believe him the last time and no chicks survived...so I took these newborns out and put em in a cage with a light bulb on it for warmth...they are eating millet already...so any chicken experts out there (ha..as if there werent) that can offer suggestions here?
the cats are enjoying this!

This thread is full of posibilities.;)
But I will be good if I must.:saint:

We normally raise our chicks in a separate box until they are about 1/3 to 1/2 the size of the grown chicks before we put them together. You can do it earlier but too soon and you will normally lose a few.

Ideally, we raise one flock every 3-4 years. They only lay well until that age. Then we borrow a rooster and incubate a bunch of eggs. We eat the males in about 8-10 weeks and raise the hens for 3-4 years of eggs.

We've got 16 layers now and are getting almost a dozen a day. When the weather warms up we will get 16 each day. The eggs are sooo good ! All different colors (even green) with much harder shells and deeper colored yolks - tasty !!

shari - 3-15-2009 at 07:50 PM

diver...do you take em away from moms right after they are born? wow. 8-10 weeks and you can eat em? Juan wont let me.

Diver - 3-15-2009 at 07:59 PM

We take the fertized eggs away from the chickens and hatch them separately.
If you've let the chicks hatch with their mom's, they may try to protect them; maybe not.

Yes 8-10 weeks and they are small but still tender. If you let them grow more than about 5-6 months, they get tougher and stringy - good for stock or pressure cooking only. Sometimes we buy meat chicks and they grow to full size within 8-10 weeks; so fat they can barely walk !

which breed of chicks have different colored eggs? a friend of mine here in the states has only brown...they are cage free and she feeds then only food they eat and they eat worms...they are soo good and deep yellow eggs.

shari - 3-15-2009 at 08:04 PM

NOW you tell me Diver....it was quite a scene Juan and I in the coop....juan fending off with a stick 4 hens all puffed out and trying to peck my eyes out as I grabbed the chicks!

Bob H - 3-15-2009 at 08:14 PM

I could not do it... eat them that is. I would get attached to the little buggers! And, most likely, they would have names too.

Iflyfish - 3-15-2009 at 08:14 PM

I had Aracana chickens and they laid colored eggs. Diver has the drill. I fone gets blood on it and it's with other chickens, it's dead.

Have fun!!! Great thing to do. You will love the eggs. Great thing for a small community to get into, chickens provide so much for what you put into them. Just don't name them.

BajaDanD - 3-15-2009 at 08:17 PM

We had 12 chickens we now only have 4 hens My wife wants to get some more next week and a few ducks and geese also. I will have to keep them away from my hens until they can defend themselves. The hens will kill them for sure. just build a small coop for them right next to the other chickens. As they grow they will get used to being around them so when you eventually do put them togather They wont even notice any difference. Chickens are pretty dumb. They will eat anything. I had one that had been pecked to the point of having a big hole about the size of a quarter and an inch deep on its back. any time it came near the other chickens they would take a peck at it. I had to put the chicken in my garage for about 2 months for it to heal. Now its back out there with the others and laying eggs.
Even 4 chickens lay too many eggs for my wife and I to eat.

mulegemichael - 3-15-2009 at 08:24 PM

shari, unfortunately, we had the opportunidad to raise chickens by the hundreds when i was a lad so i've got some "chicken sense", which doesn't make much sense...as you can imagine...but...i do know you need to separate the chicks from the adults almost immediately...provide them with miniature scratch or meal..something they can handle...they'll grow fast and juan will be lopping heads in a couple of months

Above is a site that has all kinds of chicken and other eggs.
We have 4 Araucanas that lay green eggs and some Buff Orphingtons, Rhode Island Reds, Buffs, Black Astrolorphs and some Bantoms and others. They all lay brown eggs except the Araucanas.

dianaji - 3-15-2009 at 09:10 PM

there must be a place to buy good chicks in baja...don't think it's okay to bring them into baja from the states...at least they won't ship them???

Pompano - 3-15-2009 at 09:49 PM

shari..I was raised on a working ranch. So was my wife. Her favorite saying is..."Chickens are dumber than a box of rocks." I agree with her. Theya are also vicious child haters.

At age 3, I was attacked by a huge leghorn rooster while minding my own business harassing the flock in the henhouse. Was knocked to the
ground and almost pecked to death before my Aunt Alice raced to my aid, leaping into the wing-flapping fray, putting a bear hug on that kid predator, body slamming it, and decapitating it with one lightning-fast blow of her hatchet. (you never fooled around with 'Tong War' Aunt Al)

Although tough as shoe leather, I relished the chicken stew that night.

By age 4, I learned to accept this fact:
A hen is only an egg's way of making another egg. Eat eggs. Save a kid.

If you insist on raising these monsters, read this:

When my sis was maybe 3 or 4 and I was 5 or 6, a mean ol' rooster ran up and attacked her for no reason, and bit her belly button!

Years later, we asked grandpa if he remembered the traumatic and (in a sick kinda way, humorous) incident, and he cracked up! He told us that ornery ol' cuss died very shortly after biting her!!! We all laughed at that!

capt. mike - 3-16-2009 at 06:56 AM

i knew it before i clicked......another Shari tease!:biggrin::rolleyes:

shari - 3-16-2009 at 07:30 AM

But ya clicked anyway just in case right Mike:o:o
I had to finally build a coop for our chickens as they trash the garden and plants...but they get to go out for an hour at sunset. Our guests get fresh eggs...but Juan wont let us eat any of the girls...softie.
Thanks for your suggestions and viscious chicken stories...a couple of our chickens were given to us from guys who raise fighting c-cks so some of our girls are pretty feisty all right...baja types!

Craigslist ? ?

i love that recipe and i'd put that on baja recipe forum section. u must be a good cook, cause i can tell by those ingredients...most people do not think of romano cheese in recipes.
