SANTA ROSALIA PHOTO TOUR - MARCH 2009

Pompano - 3-24-2009 at 07:46 AM

SANTA ROSALIA

I've made a few trips to Santa Rosalia in the last few days, which created lots of photo-ops, and thought Nomad viewers might like a current glimpse of this unusual European-style Baja town.

.

.
On July 7, 1885, the French mining company "El Boleo" began to harvest the rich copper deposits of Santa Rosalía.

.
Then President Porfirio Diaz offered a 99-year contract that provided for total tax exemption for 50 years and 44,742 acres of land. In exchange, the company was obliged to build a town, including a port and public buildings, generate employment for Mexican workers and establish a maritime route between Santa Rosalía and Guaymas.

.
In 1897, the Santa Barbara church was founded. It was originally designed by Gustave Eiffel in 1884 and preconstructed in two years to be shown in a World Exposition in Paris in 1889.

.
Walking or driving through the town, you get the impression of being in another place and time.

.

.

.
The seacoast town has a very nice marina. I used to tie up here 30 years ago.
.
A naval academy and administrative offices.

A well-stocked public library.

.
Immigration and judicial offices are contained in this building next to the ferry terminal.

.
The ferry service to Guaymas on the mainland.

.
A gas station that some Nomads avoid..

And lastly....Another place to avoid...at all costs! El Cereso. :saint:

.
And that's all for now, folks!.

..edited to correct church photo... Thanks to elgatoloco.

Thanks elgatoloco..those church/library profiles got me confused, which is easy to do!

Ah Mike...if you like those boleos, you are gonna love my next posting about Santa Rosalia.

Like the late and much-loved Paul Harvey used to say..."Stay tuned for ..NEWS."

David K - 3-24-2009 at 08:49 AM

Nice tour Roger!

wilderone - 3-24-2009 at 09:26 AM

Yes - very unusual for a Baja town - thanks.
Is that black stuff on the beach in the first photo, charcoal from the fire?

David K - 3-24-2009 at 10:48 AM

It's a black sand beach... just like Hawaii!

PabloS - 3-24-2009 at 08:39 PM

Thank's for the tour!

That is a really negative thing to say for those of us who really love Santa Rosalia. I happen to find it as my favorite place in terms of Baja Sur towns perhaps because it is not as touristy as places like Loreto or Mulege which seem to be overrun with Norteamericanos. Perhaps we can get El Boleo to put a branch store out by the Malecon so that you don't need to get your shoes contaminated by the streets of our wonderful town.

Bajahowodd - 3-26-2009 at 10:32 AM

I have to agree with Pescador on this. the first time I approached the town from the North years ago, I was shocked by the rusted relics of the mining operation. Then, I turned into town and was delighted by what I saw. I had read about it, but to actually behold this quaintly different town is to enjoy.

Love the photos, Roger. These and the other recent ones you posted have been a real treat.

Pescador,

Thanks for saying what I just let pass.

I've spent a fair amount of time in Santa Rosalia and San Lucas Cove also and will say that it is also my favorite small town in Baja. As far as a city goes it would be La Paz and for a village La Ventana.

JaraHurd - 3-26-2009 at 11:14 AM

I am sure it has been commented on on other threads..but..can i get a couple of posts on the problem with the Pemex station. When I drove to Mulege in 2007 my buddy and I stopped and got gas at this particular Pemex station. It was the ONLY place anyone asked for money or a tip, including TJ. I was a little disappointed....

mulegemichael - 3-26-2009 at 11:23 AM

hey folks, sorry if i offended anyone regarding my santa rosalia comments..that wasn't my intention...i just don't like it there..much like i don't care for cabo san lucas also...that doesn't make it bad...diff'rent strokes fer diff'rent folks..

Love the photos. I always park in front of that church when walking in town. Great safe place.

Found a really OLD Sta. Rosalia photo...

Pompano - 3-26-2009 at 02:41 PM

I think I took this photo in 1974. This was the now-chicken place on theright as you first drive downtown from the highway. Pretty much across and a little past from where Pepe's Taco stand now sits.

Hey, that's what young people were wearing back then...Good Lord, how did we breath?

.
The following year I drove my brand new 75 El Camino down Baja's by then potholed highway...grrrrr. This was more towards the bakery and same side of street. The gent in the hat and waving is Blackjack..JW Black, ramrod of Earl Stanley Gardner's Baja expeditions of the 50's and 60's.
.

.

Hey Mike, don't worry about some off-hand comments, amigo...I know you love Baja as much as me and I have seen you prove that many times with your generosity to the communities.

Santa Rosalia is not a typical Baja town in anybody's book. More like a North Dakota burg with small town people, shops, and a little bustle going on...even has an old time barber chair just like mine at home. Although when I asked for a shave I had to give the barber some pesos to run to the store and bring back a safety razor. Now why was I not surprised...?

It's all part of what makes Baja so homey...and further proves to me that country people are pretty much the same the world over. Rural Baja and the people are very much like rural ND...except for the saltwater.

(By the way, thinking of water & ND...keep your eyes on the current flood situation in the Red River Valley of North Dakota. That is a 150-year flood record happening right now and is hundreds of miles long, displacing over a quarter million people. Fargo area (200,000) is being evacuated. This flood is the Katrina of the north. I wonder why the poor news coverage? I have only seen coverage from Fox News so far. Come on NBC, CBS, ABC, & CNN. After all, we do have 2 Democrat senators.)

You can do a search if you really want to hear all the bad stuff about this station, but it was long known as the place to avoid because they adjusted their pumps so that your were seriously shorted when you bought fuel. You paid for 25 litres of gas but usually only got 17 or 18. The person who owns that station also owns the new station at the very north end of Santa Rosalia, as well as San Ignacio and the two stations at Guerrero Negro. Because I do not want to say anything that could be construed as slander, I don't want to go into any more detail than that.
Now the new Qualli Pemex station that is right before the marina is wonderful and everybody in Santa Rosalia loves this station where you get what you pay for, has very attentive attendants who are not known for shortchanging, and a very professional atmosphere. There is also a station just north of the new station on the east side of the road also but I have not had any experience with them because I like the guys at the other station and they do not have diesel.
Another interesting thing is that the new station does not allow the CREAD guys to beg for donations at the station wheras all of the old stations permit this.

Pescador - 3-26-2009 at 08:17 PM

Pompano, the picture of the old barber chair is, I think, from Main street or Obregon as you enter town. There used to be this barber that ran that shop that had the worst shaking hands I have ever seen. I needed a quick haircut and stopped there one day years ago and he did pretty good when he could stop the shaking long enough to cut, but when he came at me with the straightedge and wanted to shave me, I jumped out the the chair, tried not to scream, and paid him a little extra to not do anything more.

Bajahowodd - 3-27-2009 at 12:05 AM

Interesting about the Pemex stations. I had been previously warned about the Guerrero Negro stations. Too bad the crook has tentacles that roam so far. I do really think of Santa Rosalia as unique. Unfortunately for the folks who live there, it does not have broad sandy beaches that would possibly make it a destination resort. Or for the better, their little piece of heaven remains relatively intact.

Absolutely---the diversity in Baja-- something for everyone.

We love Santa Rosalia, and love this tour of the town.

Baja, nor Bajanomads, can be painted with one brush.

Pescador...that must have been my fellow, for sure. Those shaking hands convinced me that IF he was allowed to shave me, it would only be with a safey razor. It made me laugh at the time, because he reminded me so much of an old barber I go to near my hunting place in North Dakota.

Only this ND barber, Hank, is 80, steady as a rock...and has a prankish sense of humor.

He puts the 'willies' into newcomers to his old-style barber shop when he misses/hits his strop a few licks with a razor, then shuffles toward the chair, shaking his straight-edge wildly and mumbling..."let's give this another try.."

Hank's not too worried about building up his clientele. ;D

Roger,

Thanks for the pics. I miss all you fellas at the poker table. And most of all the fishing, and the cold beer, and the fish tacos, and the warm weather, and the great people. I hate this work crap.

Can't wait to get back, keep posting those pictures.

Hi Scott, good to see you posting here..and welcome to Baja Nomads. You will see folks you will recognize, so jump in and get your feet wet. I could post a photo of our poker group, but some are still on post office walls up north.

Work? Hey, you're a good enough poker player to go on tour..then go fishing, eat those tacos, and drink the cold beer in the warm Baja sun. Say hello to your charming wife and see you back here soon.

BTW, I am boat-researching at the moment and a Triumph CC, like yours, is on my top 10 list. Because I intend to roam and tow the boat behind my Dodge 3500 & 32' 5th Wheel, I am limited to 17'-19' boats. Where I am going, length restrictions say overall length of rig shall not exceed 75'.

Here's a nice 19' Triump. I like the unsinkable part.. You take good care up there, Scott.

.
.
And now back to Santa Rosalia stuff..ah, smell those Boleos??...mmmmm
.

This place brings a smile to my face.

During my first trip to baja with Alex (he was 5) he kept asking me what the people at the checkpoints were looking for.

I would tell him: bad boys.

And when they caught them they would be placed in El Cereso.

He was always on his best behavior at those stops after that.

Alas, that only worked for 2 years. :(:(

Pescador - 3-27-2009 at 09:31 PM

Yeah, Skipjack, and now they are saying that you will get picked up by the phanto U-haul truck with the Viejos. Now that is a scary thought.
