Blue Palm Fruit

tripledigitken - 3-25-2009 at 05:11 PM

While camping at Rancho Santa Ynez all the Blue Palms were filled with fruit. (not ripe) Has anyone tasted them?

I don't think there's much there to taste--pretty fibrous...but I sure wouldn't mind having those seeds out here in Fort Worth--green Mexican Fan Palms are popular and generally survive the occasional harsh arctic blasts but Blue Palms are even tougher and no one even knows about them out here (well, in Austin I've seen a few)...business opportunity!

I think some seeds may find there way back home with me next time. They are a great Palm. There are a couple in my neighborhood here in San Diego as well.

Ken, Nice photo as usual. Don't know a thing about the blue palm. What does the guy at Santa Inez say? Here's a sample of a google search:
http://www.kendallpalms.com/products/mexican_blue_palm.htm
& http://www.crfg.org/pubs/ff/edible-palms.html
here's what this ite says about the fruit. Fruit: Plump, black fruits, about one inch in diameter are borne in great sprays on the trees. The pleasant, sweet taste is somewhat like dates.
Edit: New avatar? looks like an early departure from PC

Russ,

I will ask next trip. If I were traveling down that way over the next couple of weeks I would be looking to pick some of those and try em!

Yes, the avatar is a photo from our stay 2 weeks ago leaving at sunrise.

Neat image, Ken. I really like the textures - shiny roundness of fruits against to spiky palm blades.

Mexitron is the artist! Come on Steve, show the Nomads your stuff!

Mexitron does some great paintings of Baja stuff.

If I get to the Blue Palms around here in the next month or so, I'll try and get some seeds and get them to you (Mexitron) this summer.
