I have a friend who,

In order to discourage police from taking her plates ...

Has had them Pop Rivited onto the vehicle ....

I thought that was a clever idea :wow:

If you have a valid FM3 you don't need current registration. In which case Migra, not the police is the only agency that has jurisdiction.

They used to do that all the time long ago. Cops on the streets all had pliers and a screwdriver in their back pocket. They'd take your plates to make sure you went to the station and pay the fine.

Watched them do it right on the Malecon in La Paz just last year. :no:

They sure do, so if you pop rivet them on....be prepared for body or bumper damage because rivets won't stop them from taking them off with force! The one time mine was taken (parking in an UNMARKED/UNPAINTED/NON-SIGNED red zone) off, they destroyed my license plate & plate holder because they couldn't break the bolts loose! :fire:

Dave you are correct on that. But try and convince a corrupt cop of that. I had to have a copy of the Mexican law printed up to show the said cop.

why not just park where you want and take YOUR OWN plates with you? that way, when the cop shows up he'll think his buddy Hose B beat him to your plates. :lol:

If i'm riding the bike and know i'm going to be off it more than 5 minutes I definitely pull the Plates. Use the little red round Reflectors with a star wheel, takes about 10 seconds to pull or put on.

Aduna says it is true for all of Mexico, it's just that some areas of Baja Calif Sur don't want to honor it.

Also heard a few times that current registration is not necessary if your FM2 or 3 is up to date.
However, I got stopped in La Paz in a registration check point and they surely checked if my registration was current. My truck, at that time, was kept in California in NON OP status. Handed paperwork to the cop, hoping that he couldn't read English and just would note the dates. Worked just fine. Sticker was current though. From my boat trailer, which didn't travel more then a few blocks to get to the ramp, therefor really didn't need one. :biggrin:

I didn't "pop rivet" my plates, but I did use one-way screws you need a special driver bit to remove.

Cops don't just roam around taking license plates. According to custom, it's a sort of parking ticket if one can see it that way. Just park legally and I think your plate will be secure.

P.S. They used to take your drivers license for traffic infractions and you had to go to the station, pay the fine and retrieve your license. Is that still happening anywhere?

Usual procedure here in Loreto.
Good reason to carry multiple licenses and get rid of the old one first. :biggrin:
