Finding Frozen Squid Bait In Ensenada

Festus - 3-30-2009 at 11:09 AM

Is it possible to buy frozen squid in ensenada or is it better to buy in San Diego before crossing the border?

I can't speak for Ensenada...But in the here in the Los Cabos area I frequently see frozen squid for sale ( as a food product ) in the big grocery stores like Soriana, Comercial Mexicana, etc. Often comes in a box.

I've heard the Chain of Markets in
So calif called Ranch 99, Asian food
products, sells squid that would be
good for bottom fishing Baja.
I walked thru the Fish Market at the
Harbor in Ensenada yesterday.
I remember seeing slabs of the
larger Humbolt type squid,
can't remember price though
I would probably take from
home, I understand dry ice
in a cooler, will keep them for
a while

I don't know how much you need but any tackle store in San Diego including Big 5 sports and West Marine/Boat U.S. carries frozen squid in conveniant packages.

And yes Ranch 99 (open 9-9) on Clairemont Mesa Blvd @ 805 carries fresh squid, I'd opt for frozen for traveling.

Most of the tiendas down here carry frozen (bait quality) squid in a box, mostly red in color (the box, not the squid), about 5 lbs, pretty cheap. I let it thaw just enough to break it up into sandwich size ziplock portions and throw it in the freezer for night fishing excursions. I don't usually catch much but I drink a lot of beer......hope this helps.....dt

Thats Classic DT...My kind of fishing. No catching just lots of drinking.

Thanks all. That's what I needed to know. Don't need a ton of it. Just enough to fish for a couple days in Sn Felipe and Puertecitos while we are on family vacation. Didn't want to travel all the way down from San Francisco with squid stinking up my ice box. If I can buy some when we stop in Ensenada then all the better. San Diego would work as well.

In anticipation of the comments/questions...we are going through Ensenada to get to SF because my wife has never seen the coastline over there and I wanted to show it to her. Trying to convert her into a Baja fanatic like me. :)

I have found that our market squid in the US (fresh, of course) makes better bait than the humboldt squid.
