nervously heading south

BFS - 4-4-2009 at 09:39 AM

Hola,
I am heading south around April 12 and am getting worried about this gauntlet/car jacking/beheading narco/disappearing Uhaul stuff in the press these days.
I am driving to from San Diego to my house in Todos Santos and wondering if anyone wants to join me (i drive a Ford truck so space for one passenger) as I am, reluctant to say, kinda nervous. Caravan would be ok as well if anyone is heading down around those dates, although there seems to be a some north swell forecast for around those dates so I might be veering right off the highway at various points to recharge the soul.
Anyone out there in cyberspace heading down? Or any words of wisdom to help me along the way?

Gracias
Aq

I just went down alone as far as El Rosario then out in the mountains south east of El Rosario. I did not encounter any problems. No night driving. If you come upon an accident scene keep going. It could be a set up. Stop only at roadblocks where the military or police are clearly marked. Cars, uniforms, Etc. All other roadblocks accelerate and hope they move. Never stop! Go faster. If someone pulls up next to you and displays a handgun slam on your brakes and head the other way to civilization as fast as you can. Just never stop because that is when they get you!

you do realize that that is EASTER? the week prior is known as Semana Santa and that week and the one following are NOT the time to be on the road...loads of vacationing, drinking, inattentive drivers and such on the road. many of whom may be trying to get back to where ever they came from on Sunday the 13th. everyone who can goes to the beach. I'd recommend you wait at least a week if not more if possible.

We drove south one easter weekend and the only good thing now, is it won't be a lonely road!.

Seriously, driving that weekend was quite stressful, rhintransit is correct. Lots of traffic speeding back to Ensenada.

If you do go that day, be very defensive. Even Monday should be better.

We drove to Bahia De Los Angeles on 3-20 and back on 3-28 absolutely no problems, the Military check points we less bother then they have ever been for us, and the military was so polite and friendly. We had no worries this trip and long to be back in the Bay in late May. Wishing you the best and safest trip ever.

It would be best to wait untill after Easter. There'll be much less traffic. You'll be able to enjoy the views, not the rear of the vehicle in front of you.;)

Traffic, cuidado! Dont' drive at night, again -- cuidado! Other than than, buen viaje!

Thanks for all the replies and U2Us.
I appreciate them all.
I dont actually know why I am so worried. Ive been driving through mainland for years and through the thickest of bandido country in Michoacan, Oaxaca, etc, avoiding trees in the road and fake checkpoints.
Is it the press? getting old? or maybe one of my hardcore travelling companions bringing the latest Baja shenanigans to my attention? Not really sure, but I will be heading south and looking foward to it, a day or so after easter sunday. Anyone in need of car parts, hierba mate, leashes, or whatever else, let me know and I will try and get them to you along the SD to TS route.
