I have a old Ford F250 and a new Toyota Tacoma. The ford has a camper and is a beast that sucks down the gas. It is stressful to drive on the narrow
roads with trucks coming at you. But the resale is zilch and not a desired target for thieves. It would also be crazy to try to outrun trouble in
it.
The Tacoma is new, shiny, fast and does well on the narrow roads. Much easier to drive but would also have a good resale value. Much better for out
running trouble and could easily hang with other groups of cars.
Which would be the better choice these days?

I guess my question would be where do you plan to drive it and what were you planning on using it for.

Chris I think you should think more about having fun than being ripped off. The odds are very slim that would happen. Like the odds of being caught up
in some crime comitted in the US.
I bought and built my truck for Baja(and Oregon) and I won't forego having fun because of concern overrules it.
Just do it the way you want 'cept keep a clear head if things look odd. Use your savvy when you have to. Until then go try to match that 200 fish
taco trip that "Dude" had!!
Lifes to darn short for that much worry.
edit: because I just can't type on this dumb laptop worth diddley squat. That's probably spelled wrong too!

With regard to getting there safely, not what is best for the specific trip. I am passing through the high desert area we have been discussing.

Its not about keeping a truck. It is about keeping a family safe Corkey. Low profile verses safety on a road that can be dangerous under the best
circumstances. Just looking to keep the odds in my favor as much as possible. That is all were really doing here. Playing the odds.

There seems to be a fine line between junky enough as not to attract thieves and a new enough rig to safely transport the family without breaking
down. If I break down in my old van, I am making myself more vulnerable to what may come, but I would not feel comfortable tooling around in a new
Land Rover either. I'd think that a fairly junky looking Toyota pickup from the '80s with an older pop top camper should be a suitable balance.
