BajaNomad

A possible useful cop bargaining tool..... if you got the guts

Sharksbaja - 4-6-2009 at 01:56 PM

It's worked for me. While being shaken down by some 2-bit town cop(s) I have submitted to them about their possible "world internet fame" and how I and millions of others may know of them and their exploits and trickery.

I explain that they should get someone who understands computers and the internet to Google search their name and place of activity and they will see they are world famous for their acts.

If necessary I next tell them that the current dialog we are having right now might be uploading to the internet via a satellite connection.

When I lift my center console and they see hundereds of wires and odd looking components they get a huge impression.:wow:

I play along, and if necessary I'll give them a look at my GoogleEarth GPS tracking system with map overlays and "realtime" positioning on my mounted laptop and heads-up monitor. That will always impress them. Hell, it impresses me!

They have heard all about this kind of stuff but have no idea what or how all this electronic gear operates. It's almost like fooling a dog. Pretend to throw something and they look and usually run that way.

Using Spanglish may add to the drama too.
Remember who you are dealing with.

Hell, I'd like to see this package myself! Googleearth GPS on a tracking laptop???:?::?::?::?::?:
Sounds like something I want to own. Could you post some photos and how the gadgetry works?
Thanks!!!!!:bounce::bounce::biggrin::biggrin:

805gregg - 4-6-2009 at 05:27 PM

How about taking their picture, and posting it with their name and badge # on here? Maybe get a list going of bad cops and then going to their superior? As if someone there would care, except maybe he's not getting his kick back.

Sharksbaja - 4-6-2009 at 06:09 PM

Hey not a bad idea. How's about a dirty deeds or bad cop category.

Udo, I will do that. Maybe make a new post.

Udo - 4-6-2009 at 06:28 PM

Just don't post it in "OFF TOPIC". I would never see it, thanks, Sharks!!:bounce::bounce::bounce::bounce::bounce::bounce:

Your approach is foolish. i'm reminded of the many journalists in mexico who have been killed for publicizing stories about bad cops and criminals.
maybe you'll meet the wrong cop on a day he woke up on the wrong side of the bed.
Your approach is based on assumption that cops are fools or push overs for gringos. They are probably quite savvy about their world and risks in their world. some cops are not nice people and maybe you would be better off to avoid testing those not nice people.

maybe the most important rule of traveling in outside of US and western europe: don't mess with the guys who wear uniforms and carry guns.

Osprey - 4-6-2009 at 06:45 PM

Although I disagree with everything the goat says, Sharks, I think all of that is way too much work. If they don't stop their threatening posture after the first kiss I just drive away.

I'd also advise the same tactic in the USA.

Udo - 4-6-2009 at 06:51 PM

Mtgoat: Shark's approach is no more foolish than the passenger's who scolded the cops by giving Baja a bad rap, or the mother who scolded the cop for giving her son a record, or the people who rivet their lic. plates. I'm actually going to try a new one myself...if I should get pulled over, I'll speak to the cop in one of my other favorite languages (German to start with) and pretend I don't understand what he is saying. I've heard the cops usually give up on that pretense.

Sharksbaja - 4-6-2009 at 08:38 PM

That's ok Mr Goat, each to their own. I sincerely think those type of cops don't have a clue. Ok, maybe one.

If you notice, I never said they actually were being tranmitted to the World.

I just brag slightly about being "hooked up" and use adjectives that may suggest they are. I was pretty proud of myself actually. They kept gawking and by and by just let me go scott free.

Hey, I coulda pointed my dash mounted cam at them but homie isn't that brave!

I would like to know how many Americans actually end up in the hoosegow because of an ordinary mordida stop. I'll bet very few.

Udo, I once posted my setup but took it down right away for a few reasons. Now that Google GPS is a free service it's a moot issue. I found the text part. I'll reassemble a post and get some pics.

tjBill - 4-7-2009 at 09:22 AM

I would be worried that the police would say all that is illegal and then steal your computer.

Packoderm - 4-7-2009 at 09:38 AM

We need to somehow get photos of these cops. I would like to have a cop-cam installed on my vehicle and then record all the goings on. Then we can publish the photos of the cops here on these forums. It would be nice to have a printed photo of the crooked cops and then show the crooked cop their own photo with some text printed on it about their transgressions. This could be a part of a our own homespun Interpol action.

redhilltown - 4-7-2009 at 09:48 AM

I certainly don't have all those toys, but I once forgot I had a two way radio in my glove compartment from a different trip. I realize we are talking cops here, but at a military checkpoint Senor Jefe DID NOT LIKE the radio...other friends have told me because you can signal drug boats with them...whatever. Just kind of wondering Sharks if you get the same reaction at the checkpoints when they see the gear?

Sharksbaja - 4-7-2009 at 11:50 AM

No, actually they are always intrigued by it. Remember also, your attitude plays heavily with some enforcement guys. I don't flaunt it rather I try to get them interested and sidetracked to avoid a shakedown. Hinting that I'm connected to satellites and showing them how it operates gets their interest.

This won't work for most folks simply because they don't harbor all these goodies but distraction seems to work if it powerful enough. It's the notion that they themselves"might" be a part of the internet eyes-in-the-skies that piques their curiosity.

JESSE - 4-7-2009 at 12:20 PM

This shouldnt be done.

dianaji - 4-7-2009 at 12:43 PM

boy, was i lucky! last week, someone honked at me cause i was kinda lost and i yelled, "just shut up," anyway, he passed me and guess what! it was a cop. he just kept going.

lizard lips - 4-7-2009 at 01:06 PM

Hey, If we stop these guys from doing this we will not have much more to talk about and the "charm" of Mexican Cops and their dirty deeds will disappear. I have always been able to talk my way out of greasing some cop or for that matter a ministerio publico attorney. You just have to out last em.... Play the game and don't back down and never show that you are upset with the shakedown. In fact be sooooo nice that their guilt factor will set in and you will be on your way.

Sharksbaja - 4-7-2009 at 02:28 PM

Jesse, gotta have guts or you should stay away from Mexico. These creeps can dealt with. How many ways can you bake a cake.

Perhaps what Jesse means is this action would be like "throwing down the gauntlet." A challenge that could have bad repurcussions.
Then again, I'm never quite sure what Jesse means so maybe he could explain it to us.

Iflyfish - 4-7-2009 at 02:50 PM

Sharks, like the hudspa but worry about the outcome.

I have NEVER won a bet on a white chicken at the Palenque. Nuff said.

How many Nomads or visitors have been given worse treatment for showing off their toys? Don't they kinda expect that? It's not like I'm photographing them.;)

I can already see it.

"Oh, so your using that equipment for helping narcos?"

"Oh, so your using that to take pictures of little boys?"

"Oh, so your using that to spy on mexican women?"

And then.

"Lets go to the delegacion to bring some experts and figure this one out ok?"

By this time, 20 bucks would seem like a bargain.

Funny, I never get questioned like that. Or maybe I just don't understand them. Either way is this how "locals" like yourself get treated?

Must be luck then....:wow:

btw, are you justifying mordita?

I am jst saying that while it might work with most cops, if you run into the wrong one, he can turn things around and use it against you to really get some cash.

I am against mordida, but simply mentioning "sindicatura" will get you out of trouble.

Packoderm - 4-7-2009 at 07:07 PM

I think Jesse has a good point. However, the cop-cams would be very discreet, and the printouts of various crooked cops would be housed in a plain manila envelop. It would also be great to pictures of those who stage accidents.

Mango - 4-7-2009 at 08:08 PM

I'd be more worried about becomming a target from truly corrupt cops by flashing all the fancy electronics. Sure, you might "oh and ah" some cops; but, they are not as stupid as you may think.

Funny thing is - if you go out to your rig the next day and see all the fancy electronics stripped out of it.. Who are you going to report it too? The cops may be too busy playing with all your cool stuff to bother taking a report.

Mucho Insurance, Si!

Sharksbaja - 4-7-2009 at 08:28 PM

Oh yeah, they're all jealous.
You should see my security system!
:wow:

Packoderm - 4-7-2009 at 08:42 PM

They'll probably give you a ticket for obscuring the windshield.:lol::lol: I'd leave all that stuff at home. It would take several lifetimes of fines and mordidas to pay for one hijacking or theft. I'd just bring traveler's checks and disguise them as your chief source of currency.

Udo - 4-7-2009 at 08:43 PM

Thanks for the foto, sharks!
I think I may do this for the RV. I don't think my Prius can hold all the screens, monitors, and GPS.
I am muy impressed, sharks!

bajaguy - 4-7-2009 at 09:15 PM

If you use this:

http://www.supercircuits.com/Digital-Video-Recorders/Micro-D...

You can copy it to your computer, burn DVD's (with sound) and drop them off or mail to people......start a publicity campaign without actually divulging who you are...........just DVD's showing up with crooked people on video.........

how many times do you get pulled over? I've been pulled over twice in 25+ years and let go after asking to pay the fine with the judge.

Sharksbaja - 4-7-2009 at 11:36 PM

We have a little DVDplayer that is part of the system. THere are AV in/out in the back at the foot of the console.

Also a 20amp AC outlet plus an xtra 12v DC output ,for a Video Game Console that is mounted in one of the small well under the back seat.

The whole system is integrated and I can in/out any of my toys. I have three separate GPS elements and each performs differently.

A Pioneer Vehicle Dynamics component(I posted about it years back) reads a variety of inputs like tilt angles, torque , HP acceleration, and you can program it to mark and record waypoints and play it back virtually on the screen

One input is for the back-up camera that I swap out between my bike trailer and my enclosed hauler.

No dichotomy involved with seeking out the most remote and pristine places in the world to chill at, and carrying along a plethora of state of the art electronic toys that connect to everyone, everywhere real time all the time?

Sharksbaja - 4-7-2009 at 11:55 PM

Yep, I figure, "What the Hell" I love this stuff. I have some more to show you later with the GPS Google interface.
I built the system so I can always add or subtract components. Many of these parts are very cheap, it's a matter of getting them to be compatable. Not always an easy task. I've upgraded it many times.

Back when Rosarito gringos were being targeted a friend was pulled over by the police. While they were discussing the alleged infraction she told the officer she would call her attorney and began dialing. The cop took her phone.

Sharksbaja - 4-8-2009 at 11:19 AM

(sigh) Well first off I don't drive around with all that stuff hanging there exposed. I use it when I need it. My mama didn't raise no fool(or at least she didn't think so).
I don't challenge cops either, rather I like to make pals and go out to dinner with their families.:P Well maybe not that friendly.

Sharksbaja - 4-8-2009 at 03:10 PM

I guess so. I was reluctant to show all this stuff because of.... but hey, I was asked to. I'll post the original from 2007 that I have. Maybe the actual purpose for this stuff could be better understood, looked at realistically and not as some kind of status, much like the many owners of jacked up trucks.
Why would I put countless hours and gizmos into my truck? Because I want function and I like to build stuff. I actually have hobbies.

Surely you can understand that.
