You are fine as long as you don't have an accident and injure someone. Personally, I would spend the money on insurance. If for nothing else just the
peace of mind.

I have traveled this route many times. My extensive research has resulted in the following:
If you use a credit card to rent vehicle, you need to buy the basic liability insurance (which keeps you out of Mexican jail if you have an accident),
but do NOT need comprehensive and collision coverage from the rental company IF your credit card is the type that also covers collision/comprehensive
(gold/platinum type cards)....The credit card company (Visa) assured me that this coverage is in effect all over the planet except in Ireland and some
other podunk country (the name of which eludes me)
Mexican car rental agencies frequently try to insist you buy their Comp/Coll coverage as this is where they make their money....as that coverage is
often the same or double the daily rental rate....
When I checked this out in Zihuatanejo two years ago, Hertz was the only company that said they would accept the credit card coverage.....
Call your credit card company and confirm this info BEFORE you travel
Que via bien

Most all Bank Cards provide you with Coverage. If you have the fine print pamplet that came with your card you will find it in there or call them. My
Visa card provides $50,000. in auto ins. coverage and I use it when I rent a car. As stated above they will tell you that you have to take out their
insurance policy. When I talked with my Visa card holder about that they told me to get a statement from the rental co. stating that on their letter
head and I would be reimbursed for the charge.
Don't worry, be happy
