Mexicali to San Felipe 4 8 09

Today I made a quick trip to Mexicali and returned.

There is the usual Federal Highway Police and Mexicali Police checkpoint about a kilometer north of the Mex 2 toll road crossing of Mex 5. They just slow you down and look at you and the car. Looking for drunk drivers and have the tow truck ready for those they find. (I say usual as they do this almost every year). Also handing out pamphlets warning of fines and jail for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Quite a bit of southbound traffic, mostly Baja Calif. plated cars, plus a few Calif. USA plates.

The military checkpoint wasn't doing much inspecting of southbound traffic today. I just said San Felipe and he waved me thru.

The highway construction from K143 south is progressing. A 11 mile detour to the east side of the road is well maintained and fairly smooth for a dirt road. I was comfortable at 50 mph. Then of course shen someone has a trailer full of quads and goes about 20, that creates quite a line up of cars.

All in all, not a bad drive, but expect more traffic tomorrow and even more on Friday. Then Sunday it will be bumper to bumper heading north.

Thanks for the road report Lou, we're heading down tomorrow, leaving San Diego around 1 p.m.

See ya on the highway!

Leaving Phoenix tomorow at 1 as well.
Any suggestions what time anyone is heading back Sunday? Is it best to get up at the crack of dawn?

Monday would be a better day to come home... otherwise, yes early Sunday... while everyone else still has a hangover!

Well... you ARE driving a Ford... right???:?::lol:

Serously, Lou is probably in a lighter vehicle and 50 mph on a graded road ia a piece of cake... Same thing in my Tacoma.

That dirt road detour sucked! But we sure had a few fun days in baja. But what sucks even more is that road south of Puertocitios, I would not have believed it if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes! I suppose, if you build the road, they will come. Gonzaga will never be the same!:(

Sucked because of the pavement extending south, or because the dirt section is so rough? Catch some halibut?

Well, I ended up coming back late Saturday and stayed in Yuma. The crowds still seemed like they were heading south. However, I did watch the Border Crossing wait times on Sunday and I never really saw anything nasty.

Just got back today...

We were down for 6 days, great weather, water temp is a cool 68 degrees, and 77 degrees in the lagoon one mile north of our house.

I thought it was a very quiet Spring Break. Our home is about 22 miles south of San Felipe and there are usually more residents and more campers but this was the quietest we'd ever seen it.

The detour is exactly 10 miles long and they are making great progress. We were easily able to drive it at 40 m.p.h.

The army stop was only 3 minutes with a minimul inspection. The border at East Mexicali was only 45 minutes at 11:00 a.m.

Town was very quiet and there was only one group camping on the beach as we got near town.

We took our trucks out to the desert for a 50 mile round trip drive, took the quads on the beach for about a 30 mile round trip ride, and took out the jet ski's three differant times on smooth water.

Great trip. Can't wait to go back! (in two weeks)

Today, Wed. Apr 15th, the wind is drifting sand across Hghy 5 just south of Laguna Salada. Up to a foot on the west edge of the roadway extending clear acorss. Have to be careful thru there for the next few days. It was about 5 inches deeper this afternoon than when I went up in the morning.
