Well dog lovers, another freedom in Baja has gone away. New signs have been posted on the Rosarito public beaches that say all dogs must be leashed: "Animales sin correo" with the translation "animals on strap" below.

I don't think they realize how many americans travel with their dogs to baja or how many Mexicans love their pets too. I think there could be one "Dog Beach" away from the hotel zone for people to play in the surf with their dogs (San Diego has three).

We are going to offer the use of our FMZ concession land as a "Dog Beach". We'd pay for the additional signage. We can't figure out a way to supply plastic bags for people to use to clean up after their dogs though. Every time we put plastic bags out- the first person to pass by takes them all.

Maybe that aspect of dog-owner collective responsibility is why most of us don't want dogs sh*tting on the beaches and parks :no:

There are all kinds of laws down here but no one pays any attention to them.

Not too many pits down here. Packs of mangey beach dogs... yes. I don't know that they will enforce the rule. It only says to leash them- not to clean up after them. Every family shows up at the beach with a six pack of TP rolls and a shovel. Dogs are the least of the public offenders. The rental horses (the few left) leave some huge piles- cleaned up only weekly.

We do clean up after our 5 dogs but have been scolded about throwing the plastic bags in the trash cans on the beach. Many people go through the trash looking for treasure and the rangers say they don't like the dog waste on their hands when they do the trash cans. Go figure. It is really hard for a Mexican to walk past a beach trash can without looking into it or digging through it I guess.

Perhaps if Mexicans were familier with the basic hygine routine of WASHING their hands they wouldn't be so upset.

We are still operating out of both places right now. (Rosarito-San Quintin) Hopefully before summer is over we will be living full time in San Quintin...

If your dog runs on the beach, wash it down in fresh water.

A friend lost his dog to skin infections.

Where did that happen?

I know that if we let our dogs swim here in Imperial Beach, they are apt to have skin and ear problems, but they have no problems after swimming in Bahia Asuncion.

Curious where your friend was

I didn't want to get too pedantic - dogs that are bred to go into water, especially salt water, usually don't have problems.

Non-water breed dogs with thin coats often get infections.

Also, if you value your pet, do a bacteria test on the on any water they swim in, including swimming pools that are not maintained properly (another horror story).

So the water and beach sand of Rosarito are fine for children but not clean enough for our dogs to use? :saint:

I've seen a lot of stray dogs with bad skin infections. The animal control people in Rosarito Beach are effective at catching them- I've seen them in action. You don't want to know what they do with them- trust me.

At a minimum I rinse off the dogs feet and underbelly each time they come in from the beach. Labs like to be toweled off- so that part is never a problem. If they are really wet and sandy they hit the dipping pool. I clean their ears with Q-tips and use antibiotic drops from the vet when they get the occasional ear infections. My mexican in-laws tease me by lining up for ear cleanings behind the five dogs- I think they are jealous.

My yellow lab has logged many, many hours in the ocean north of Rosarito. I do always hose her down when we get back, mainly just to get the saltwater and sand off. Never had a problem in all these years.
