3G ROUTER

shawsky - 4-19-2009 at 10:50 PM

Does anybody know where I can purchase a wireless router for a telcel 3G internet connection?

Linksys WRT54G3GV2-ST

I'm interested in this TelCel service. I heard the Mulege area now offers it. Can anyone file me in on if it works in Mulege/Chivato. How much/mo. and how fast and reliable the service is? I'm locked into Hughes for awhile but there are a lot of folks here looking for a less expensive and faster service with out the FAP restrictions of Hughes.

If a Telcel cellphone works where you are at the internet service will work.

In many areas, it currently only works at GPRS/EDGE speeds (192kpbs at best). For true 3G speeds (several times faster) it needs the local tower upgraded to 3G. This exists at present in parts of Mexicali, not yet in San Felipe - don't know about which areas have 3G yet further south.

To see if you have 3G yet in your area, switch the network to "UTMS only" on a 3G phone and see if you can pick anything up.

BTW, the Linksys router mentioned earlier is for Sprint EVDO - incompatible technology to Telcel's 3G UTMS mobile broadband.

I'd be interested to hear from anybody who does have a router that works at 3G speeds on Telcel (in a 3G area) as if/when 3G reaches San Felipe I'll probably switch to it from Telnor's fixed wireless.

Advice from the purveyor of 3G in Santa Rosalia. The service in this area is very slow. Hardly better that that of dialup.

Does not offer more speeds as yet and he does not see an upgrade in the future.

Stick with your Hughes folks!

Telcel 3G works in a large part of the Baja. It does not however, support VOIP at this time. Talking to some of the local Telcel dealers they say VOIP works in Tijuana and Mexicali at this time. The VOIP support is being worked on and will be available in more areas of Baja, Manana.

Thanks all. Maybe Maņana:?:

There's probably some confusion about the terminology - especially from the dealers! In fact one of the dealers in San Felipe still thinks data hasn't reached San Felipe yet, and they are still unaware of the prepaid "unlimited data" packages launched last November.

VOIP needs a certain bandwidth to operate, rather than any specific network support. With the older data technology (GPRS/EDGE) at 120-190kbp/s it's just about possible but not really reliable enough, the 20-80kb/s upload speed especially is too small (same on the Telnor fixed wireless systems which are similar speeds, VOIP can be made to work but unreliable).

So for real "VOIP support" you just need a faster network (ideally without the long round-trip times of satellite). That's what's now available in parts of Mexicali, Tijuana, etc - technology varioulsy known as 3G, UTMS 850, HSDPA. The speed of 500-1500 kbp/s is enough for VOIP, especially as the upload speed is also faster. 3G that "doesn't yet support VOIP" isn't 3G, it's just the older phone data technology, GPRS/EDGE.

To Riom,
Re: Linksys 3G wireless router.

I'm getting internet access via a 3G telcel modem, Huawei E226. The speed is ok but doesn't appear as fast as advertised. we have magicjack and the service works but is spotty.

Ideally I would like to take my 3G wireless modem and connect it to a 3G wireless router to provide local (close range) internet access. In that case, which 3G router would work in this setup?

Thanks!

What sort of speeds are you actually getting? Try http://www.dslreports.com/speedtest?flash=1 or http://mobilespeedtest.com/

It would be interesting to see if you get speeds better than GPRS/Edge - you need the local tower to support 3G HSDPA/UMTS, as well as the modem. If your modem has a way to set "3G only" try that and see if you still get a signal.

I don't have any ideas for a router yet (no 3G yet in my area) but a work-around would be "internet sharing" or similar on your main computer - i.e. use the network connection of your main computer as the "WAN" link for a normal wired or wireless router. A 3G router would replace the modem (basically it's a modem plus router), not connect to it.

we have 3G in Loreto now and I have macs so I ordered an airport extreme and hoping it will work as a router so all my macs can be connected. I can skype video chat or iChat with my sister in seattle on the telcel 3G usb setup I have a ZTE mf626 modem o n the telcel system.

What speeds are anybody getting on the "3G" from Telcel? Try the speed tests on http://www.dslreports.com/speedtest?flash=1 or http://mobilespeedtest.com/

If it's 192 kbps up, 64kpbs down, or similar, that isn't 3G, it's the older GPRS/Edge speeds (still useful if there is no other choice, and marginally faster than Telnor's fixed wireless).

But if you do have true 3G already in your area (850 UTMS/HDSPA, like parts of Tijuana and Mexicali and probably elsewhere), I'd be very interested to see what speeds you're getting! Hopefully at least 1Mb/s? Thanks.

Any update on this? Predictions for when real 3G might be available in San Felipe? (And would it reach out to El Dorado Ranch or likely only in town?)

comitan - 7-17-2009 at 02:45 PM

Here's my speedtest for La Paz. Using 3G modem.

I have a telcel 3G that I mostly use in the Todos Santos/ Pescadero area. The speed seems to depend on the time of day. It is usually faster very early in the morning and late at night, in the evenings sometimes it is excruciatingly slow. It supports my magic jack most of the time. It is very convenient when traveling. We have used it in Ensenada, San Quintin, Guerrero Negro, and Ciudad Constitution with no problems.

comitan - 7-18-2009 at 05:07 AM

Larry

Use it every day, and have downloaded more than 1000 tunes.

There have been changes, previous tests were from Mexico City and they were slower, now the test is using San Diego, and shows me in TJ. I'm using the short cable 10" have it pointed clear to La Paz, I was using a 9' extension and it was not good, they say not to use more than 3 Mts.

Just got back to San Felipe (for a very short visit) - in town there IS now a 3G signal (that's new!), but the tower out by El Dorado doesn't have it yet. I haven't tested the data speed on the 3G in town (it's the El Dorado tower that I'm also waiting for). I assume they'll upgrade them all in time.

To check for it, switch your 3G phone to "UTMS only" (or similar), not GSM. Needs a phone capable of 3G 850 (a few US phones might be 3G 1900 only). Nokia E51 works, amongst others.
