Good stuff

I thought I would post this because I feel like the media and the public in general just love to dwell on negative stuff that happens in Baja. Here is a positive story.

Traveling south 2 weeks ago we ran into a lady that runs a bed and breakfast in Bahia de Conception. She told us this story. While at the check point in San Ignacio heading north she inadvertantly left a bag there with jewerly and money amongst other items in it.

She did not realize the mistake until getting gas in GN. She went to the military base and asked them if they could call the check point to see if it was there. Much to her relief the bag was indeed there. Before she could leave to fetch her bag the person helpping her in GN offered to have one of the soldiers bring the bag to GN for her. She couldn't believe it and gladly took them up on the offer. A little while later the bag showed up just as she had left it.

I have been traveling to baja most of my life and this story is consistent with the kind of treatment I have always recieved at the checkpoints. I find that if you make an effort to talk with them and give them respect for doing their job it helps things to go smoother.

Over the years I have had some pretty funny conversations at the checkpoints.

There are more of those kinds of stories about Baja than the bad ones in my experience here.

That is good stuff. We once heard of a situation where a camera disappeared and the commandante made all the guys chip in money to replace it. We have had all types of experiences at checkpoints most all were pleasant. I do recall the old PRD ? checkpoint heading north into Maneadero, those guys were real p-nche meatheads especially one guy who seemed to be the jefe and wore mirrored sunglasses and spoke a little english. He was a smartass.

I have always wanted to just once answer NO when the guy asks if he can inspect the vehicle just to see what he does next. Most of these guys are young and far from home and bored spitless.

At the San Ignacio check point, one of the military wanted to take my mag light said he needed it, I forceably told him I need it more and his country should supply him with one if he needed it. I kept my flashlight, I agree most are good souls but there is a new breed not there in the 60's, 70's that will cut your head off if they don't like you.

At least he "asked" for it rather than just taking it. But you make a good point, I suppose-----the times they are a-changing, or so it appears. Personally, I have never had any problems at check-points------they are just "doing their jobs", it seems to me.

We have had soldiers ask for flashlights We laugh with them and treat it like they are teasing. and they laugh with us. No problems.
