baja sailing?

Awatson - 4-21-2009 at 04:33 PM

Is there no "sailing" category on this board? I'm not sure where to post a question like this. I cannot believe there isn't a forum section for this, since there is for just about every other activity you can think of.

oxxo - 4-21-2009 at 04:40 PM

I agree!

Oso - 4-21-2009 at 04:43 PM

There are several of us interested in this subject.

Doug?

shari - 4-21-2009 at 05:39 PM

ditto...coming soon to a sailing thread near you...update on Shipwrech Sarah!!!

I love anything that gets me on the water...

Pompano - 4-21-2009 at 06:03 PM

..and sailing in Baja is definitely one of them.

Egads, good question, Watson. I never noticed that there was no special category for 'sailing'...I just posted sailing threads in photos or general like usual. It's certainly popular and common knowledge among Baja travelers. A high percentage of Baja people I've met over the last 35 years are sailors. So, yup, fair question.

It's a very popular theme where I live in Conception Bay. Living in front of one of the best anchorages around, I am surrounded by sailboats. I have and do sail. From Hobies to better-made Prindles to sloops to trimarans to pilothouses and more. The Cortez is made to order for them. I may go tomorrow. ;D

post a question like what?:?:

Udo - 4-21-2009 at 07:17 PM

Ey Watson...
I can not speak for this forum regarding saling.
However...
I have sailed a Hobie 16 all over the Sea Of Cortez, plus raced the Hobie in San Felipe, Puerto Penasco, and Ensenada.
I quit sailing after a serious motorcycle accident, but now I own a Hobie kayak that also has a sail.
Perhaps you need a question answered?

There are other forums that are dedicated to sailing in Baja, and no one has ever brought up the subject here on Nomads.

oxxo - 4-21-2009 at 07:31 PM

In da islands! Where? I'm not sayin'

Hobie Mirage?

805gregg - 4-21-2009 at 07:54 PM

I have a Hobie outback with a sail, OXXO is that a Wilard boat?

Pompano - 4-21-2009 at 08:26 PM

Actually, there are several Cortez area forums for sailors..and it has been brought up here a couple times in the past.

bbs.trailersailor.com/forums/cortez
www.latitudemexico.com/forum
www.seacortez.com
www.lonelyplanet.com
www.sailnet.com/forums/
hubpages.com/tag/sailing+in+the+sea+of+cortez
forums.cruisingworld.com

and a bunch more, but you get the idea.
It would be nice to have another one right here, too...so ask away.

Udo - 4-21-2009 at 08:28 PM

No it's not a Hobie Mirage (which is a 20' catamaran). My kayak (my wife has one also, a yellow one) is a Hobie Adventure Island, which one can pedal, paddle, or sail. Or as mine is set up, for fishing also.
My best fishing set-up ideas came from Kayak Angler magazine and the Hobie kayak forum.

Oxxo...that's a very nice motorsailer!

Yep, Willard 40PH, parked right next to your boat, AFTER MIDNIGHT.

7.5 knots and no wake.

I want to get one of the Hobie tandem peddle kayaks and throw it up top.

Oxxo...
Roam the craigs lists or put an ad for what you want. That is where I both yaks. 2 grand apiece and one year old with all the upgrades.
As far as putting one on top of the boat...would be cool, but a little heavy. Need at least two strong men to pick up, about 60+ lbs from the water.

Good suggestion, thanks.

Not a problem. I have an electric winch on the boom rated at 2000 lbs. I'd just rig up a bridle and haul it up out of the water.

bajajudy - 4-22-2009 at 07:03 AM

A few years back we chartered a cat out of Moorings in La Paz for a week.

I would love to do something like that again. It was one of the most memorable sailing adventures of my life.

There is a trip report on that hidden in the bowels of the Nomads...yuck!

Pompano - 4-22-2009 at 07:40 AM

Judy....I remember that charter boat post!

Ah..'bowels of the Nomads' ?....staggers the imagination...

tripledigitken - 4-22-2009 at 08:30 AM

Pompano,

One item on my wish list for Baja.

Sailing in one of your neighbors sailboats in a 15 knot breeze on Conception Bay! Now that would be a perfect moment.

Must be some way to bribe him into letting me rent one!?! Old Tequila, Single Malt, chica's or?

Ken

No problema Ken, I sold my sloops, but if I am here you can sail either a Hobie or Prindle 16'... or we can enlist a Drascom for that slower, but more cozy sail. No amigos with larger trimarans here now, but should be by next winter. If nieghbor Joe is here, he' always ready to take out his sloop.

Some of the most fun on a sailboat I ever had was during our local regattas a few years back. Man, did we sail..hangin in the harness..flying one hull.....downwind wing on wing...doing what we could to find the best WIND....all fun!

I was out on my Prindle 16 cat one day and saw a big turtle way ahead of me. I laid down face forward on the mat and steered wing on wing with my feet on the rudder arm, my head hanging over the front of the mat. I came up behind that turtle so quietly that I was directly over his head when the cat's shadow went over him....about a foot away....He looked up, saw me, and splash/showered me as he went down. A fine day! :D

Took a chance, went into the bowels and found that thread but all the photos were missing which made it BORING!

However, I did find this photo
There are two young people traveling around Baja in two Cal 25's. Last summer they careened their boats in Juancalito so they could paint the bottoms.
Talk about sailing Baja...they are doing it!

Great photos of those sloops, Judy.

Pompano - 4-22-2009 at 03:16 PM

You're right about all those old posts with photos, all gone...Gasp! Good thing I have all mine on discs..ready to post any time now...

Those kids remind me of a few of us a hundred years or so ago. This amigo, Johnny Tequila, careened his trimaran on Burros Beach after it drug anchor and holed the stern. This photo shows him doing a little emergency repair while some other amigos from NOLS are manning the pumps. An exciting day in the bay.

I can remember JT saying later around that evening's campfire.."For real bailing, nothing beats a scared man with a bucket."

I cant take credit for the photo. One of them took that.

Nice follow-ups by us Nomads on this thread...
but we still have not found out why Watson wanted a sailing sub-forum on Nomads!

Awatson - 4-22-2009 at 06:45 PM

Well, it seemed logical to me. There is a section for every other activity. I live in Tucson, and I just bought a little 18' Seaward. I'm looking forward to running around in San Carlos Sonora. A buddy wanted to head across to the Mulege area. I just wanted to see others experiences, opinions, tips, advice, do and don'ts, etc...

So I was a little surprised there wasn't a "sailing specific" area. thats all. Not a big deal. Sailing info, reports, conditions, etc... can certainly all be posted under "general discussion". You could however use the same logic for all sub-forums, so why bother having them separated at all?

There's very little posting activity on any of the forums you provided links to, and not much info in the posts that are there.

That would be a Jim Brown trimaran. I sailed on one for a few days in the South Pacific.

Pompano - 4-22-2009 at 08:16 PM

Yes, oxxo, lots of Browns here in the SOC over the years. Johnny's 'Quetzal' was a veteran of Hawaii and the South Pacific, too. We sailed her in all kinds of weather..once flew back into the bay downwind of a quick chubasco. We could have water-skied. No time to pitchpole.

Exactly! The Browns are the best designed trimarans....ever, in my opinion. The daggerboards in the amas were a brilliant innovation.

Jim Browns is a wonderful humanist. I hope he gets the credit he deserves sometime in the future for all the work he has done in third world countries. The last I heard he was living in Florida but getting pretty "long in the tooth."

I wish he would have retired in Baja. He would have liked it here.

Here is one for you, Watson...
About 25 years ago myself and three buddies sailed our Hobie 16's from San Felipe to Puerto Penasco, and three years later we did it again but the other way around. Each time we went, we left at 6:30 a.m. and arrived at the other coast just after dark. At that time all we had were baja charts and compasses. Excellent trip!:bounce:

Awatson - 4-24-2009 at 12:47 AM

Udo, man that takes big balls on a little cat! I can't wait to get down there.

I've been all around Kino, Pto Penasco, and Guaymas my whole life, but never sailed across. I'm really looking forward to doing some week long trips with my kids. Maybe dragging a lure for Dorado in July or so...

fishbuck - 4-24-2009 at 01:13 AM

Hey Watson, didn't you read the story about Shipwrech Sarah!
That's a classic Baja sailing story if ever I read one.
But my guess is your talking about sailing the Cortez not the mighty Pacific.
I would love to sail up and down the Cortez on a nice yacht. A 30-40 foot sloop sounds about right.
I've sailed alot of the Cali coast on some nice big schooners. Sailing and Baja have atleast one thing in common. You get there when you get there.
Manana!

It was February when we did the crossings, and once we were about 10 miles out, the other coast was fairly visible. Especially spotting El Picacho Del Diablo behind San Felipe, which on a clear day is visible from Penasco. Young and adventurous trumps big balls any day. The major considerations we had were the tide and strong currents. We did have VHF radios and EPIRB's, plus all of us had sailed in chubascos before.
