breaking News.

That's funny. We can have a Easter Egg Hunt for the essential ones.

Woooosh - 4-29-2009 at 11:19 PM

do all these people get sent home with pay?

Bajahowodd - 4-29-2009 at 11:42 PM

Nice headline, but without clarification, it means little. No military checkpoints on highway 1? No bug spray at Guerrero Negro?

BajaGringo - 4-30-2009 at 12:45 AM

Not completely clear which offices. They just said "non-essential". They also urged private business to do the same so the place could really get shut down. I have a little more on it here:

Mexico Shuts Down Non-Essential Government Services

It's funny because they'd be shut down anyway!. May 1 is Labor Day (holiday), May 5 is holiday (Battle of Puebla), which makes May 4 a holiday just because it falls in between.

And, I forgot, today is Chldren's Day, so there would have been no school today either.

Good timing!

bajabound2005 - 4-30-2009 at 08:11 AM

That's why I thought the original post was meant as a joke!

shari - 4-30-2009 at 09:04 AM

yes, that was the idea, to take advantage of the holiday. Last night the President made a rousing speech and made me feel good about my country and how it has responded responsibly, quickly and effectively to this pandemic....viva mexico. (i bet video rental places and take out pizza places are making a killing!)

huh. You believe that crap? Mexico fell flat on her face handling this and is taking serious heat from the world over it. They always talk like they are the kings of the world- but in reality they are a third world country just talking big.

It has been one month since the first case. Mexico did nothing to identify, isolate, communicate or treat those close to the outbreak. Actually less than nothing becasue they never really tested the original samples until the bug was on the loose. But Calderon can still pat himself on the back? I'll bet the WHO would give them an "F"...

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - The 39-year-old woman who was the first to die in Mexico's swine flu epidemic spent the last eight days of her life going from clinic to clinic to find out what was wrong with her but doctors were baffled.

The woman, from the southern state of Oaxaca, died shortly after being admitted to hospital as an emergency case. Experts only identified the virus that killed her 10
days later.

Anyone catch this piece in the LA Times this morning? Apparently this swine flu is less virulent than the regular flu I had in February.

Woooosh - 4-30-2009 at 10:22 AM

It's the FLU, not the plague. Seriously- I don't know what all the hubbub is about either. More people die from the known flu strains- this one seems less dangerous.

this isn't funny because the ONLY federal OFFICIAL holiday of those dates is Manana, May first. The other dates are just regular days and if they fall on a weekday its business as usual.

bajabound2005 - 4-30-2009 at 05:03 PM

"The State of Baja California does not have to comply with the federal directives to send pregnant women home, or to close businesses for 5 days... etc because there are no confirmed cases of swine flu in Baja".

Just got that off the San Felipe website.

fdt - 4-30-2009 at 05:51 PM

San Felipe site is not updated, The state of Baja California is now in sink with the rest of the nation.
http://www.bajacalifornia.gob.mx/influenza/boletin_pos.html

On the governmet sector, fedral, state or city, only police, army, marines, medical personel, pemex and financial institutions will remain working.

On the private sector all activity should stop except those that are fundamental such as airports, ports, highways, banks, supermarkets, drugstores, telecomunications and media as well as hotels and restaurants as long as there are no large groups of people present.

It is requested that everyoe remain at home until after the 5th of May.

flyfishinPam - 4-30-2009 at 05:55 PM

So what happens to Lord Blacks? just curious.

fdt - 4-30-2009 at 05:59 PM

Depends on the size of the croud:saint:

JESSE - 4-30-2009 at 06:04 PM

Calderon is going to get some serious heat from everybody, after it comes clear that they acted too slow at first, and then overexagerated.

flyfishinPam - 4-30-2009 at 06:09 PM

actually I never thought that much of Calderon and I am on his side now. he really needs our support and I'm willing to give it. what a hell of a job he has now.

Imagine if the USA had to shut down. No shopping no restaurants, no federal express, no going to your job because you are ordered to stay home. How to you shop for food, then how do you buy food and pay bills when you can't even go to work, no money coming in? OR your government completely shuts down? I really can't imagine the USA being able to even come close to taking these measures or even suggesting them.

Well we're all sittin' at home here and we're all discussing what's happening and more. This will make us stronger and we'll get through this. If any country can pull this off its Mexico. I think its time we as a country stop taking orders from everyone else and strengthen ourselves to become more independent. We have everything right here to do just that. I hope that after this passes our government takes a serious look at de-centralizing itself and perhaps giving states more rights to govern themselves.

oldlady - 5-2-2009 at 10:09 AM

You make a good point, FFP. Any glitch in the "system" in the USA often causes a reaction ranging from bewilderment to upheaval. An electrical outage is a crisis, if dial tone is lost at the same time, is becomes catastrophic. My observation is that Mexicans take things more in stride.
Maybe a little "ni modo" helps maintain rationality.

flyfishinPam - 5-2-2009 at 10:23 AM

well I decided to do spring cleaing all day yesterday and as you can imagine we found lots of dusty stuff to clean off. sowhen I went into town for errands and a lovely back, neck and shoulder massage (AHHH), I sneezed in the grocery store. i felt guilty and caught myself lookng around even though I am not sick. I am glad that Loretanos aren't paranoid about all this as who knows I could have been pulled away for some kind of examination to make sure I don['t have the flu. I am told that in the airport they're using a finger scanner to take people's temperatures looking for feverish flu symptoms. this whole thing is freaking weird it stinks so I'll be avoiding the "news" for awhile as for whatever happens is really out of my control anyway

oldlady - 5-2-2009 at 10:30 AM

It's rumored that sneezing might be added to the characteristics in Homeland Security's "might be a terrorist" list. Rumor.
