c-cktails in Baja??

Bob H - 5-2-2009 at 03:45 PM

I would be interested to know what Nomads like to drink (c-cktails) in Baja. We are not talking about shrimp here, or beer.

I, personally, would start off with a nice Bombay Safire Gin Martini! Three small onion stuffed olives please served in an ice cold frosty martini glass!

Thank you very much!

Bob, you are bound to get a zillion posts on this one. At the house I like a Bloody Mary: Vodka, Clamato, one lime, tablespoon salsa fresca right from the bowl, pickled asparagus spear on the rocks.

If I'm out on the town a Painkiller if I can find an experienced mixologist:
Pusser's Rum, OJ, Pineapple Juice, Sweetened coconut cream, crushed ice, blended but not too much.

DENNIS - 5-2-2009 at 04:00 PM

Caña. Vision ceases after four ounces and when you slide off the back side of the barstool, gashing and mashing your face in the landing, caña can be used to sterilize your wounds.
Other than that....Pacifico.

c-cktails!!!

Cardon Man - 5-2-2009 at 04:02 PM

For me c-cktail "hour' starts with...

1 shot of damiana, 1 shot of vodka, a lime wedge , and club soda over ice.

A couple of those and I move on to 12 year old Flor de Caña rum on the rocks....repeat until fully drunk.

Interesting that tequila hasn't made a showing yet.

Fred - 5-2-2009 at 04:13 PM

OK.............Tequila in a "different style" shot glass. I collect "different style" shot glasses. Other than that a Pacifico.

Oh...i love Tequila also. But I find that Tequila is an all or nothing deal for me. If I start with it I've got to finish with it. And i'm a guy with no problem switching spirits in the course of a night. Tequila is powerful stuff.

Bajahowodd - 5-2-2009 at 04:21 PM

Y'all have probably come across the cans of New Mix, which is tequila, with fruit flavorings and carbonated. Several different offerings. Has about the same alcohol content as beer, but is flavorful. Years ago I recall they actually had new mix light, which, like diet sodas, was artificially sweetened. Cut down not only on the sugar, but the calories. I even had a promotional tee shirt for New Mix Light. Haven't seen the Light version in several years.

I am a Mojito gal.
I have a lovely container full of fresh mint from which I take three or four sprigs and put them in the bottom of a tall glass. To this I add one small teaspoon of sugar and smash them well with an iced tea spoon then add a shot or two of Havana Club anejo(I know that you are supposed to use white rum but I dont like it!)and ice cubes. I like Topo Chico agua mineral but any club soda will do. I pour that in to within an inch of the top of the tall glass and stir with same iced tea spoon. It will have some sort of chemical reaction and fill to the top of the glass and then recede. I top it with some more Topo and voila.
I dont use lime nor limon but some people do.
Jeez am I ever thirsty.

In honor of Tica's sister, Kapu, our coal black Great Dane with just a splash of white.

Hot black coffee or espresso,
Vodka
Tequila
Damiana (the Mexican Passion Fruit liqueur)

Whipped cream

BajaNuts - 5-2-2009 at 06:15 PM

all these kahlua and cream drinks are really yummy, but pretty heavy for "long term drinking".

Good for a couple, but then it gets too sweet. Something a little more refreshing for the long haul.

In honor of our one-eyed-with-a-blue eye, white Great Dane puppy.

White rum

Fresh lime juice and a bit of sugar syrup
Fresh mint

Muddle the mint with sugar in the glass, add fresh ice.

Pour in the other ingredients and stir.

After a couple, you will be one-eyed. too.

Yes, the mojito is a fine c-cktail! We also have a great patch of fresh mint to harvest for Mojitos and Mint Juleps ( another great drink ).
For my mojitos I prefer 4 yr white Flor De Cana Rum.

I think I've found the theme drink for my sister's 50th celebration next week. :tumble: I've had Pina Colada in the back of my head but this sounds much better. Is the coconut creme the same or similar to Coco Loco pina colada mix?

famous shooter drink i learned at a yearly sinko day mayo party in AZ:

San Juan Hooker.

big shot of frozen hornitos or sauza "Azul"

chase with 1/2 shot of chilled dill pickle juice with a drop of any good pepper sauce like cholula or - .

sounds odd but it is an amazing after taste to the cactus juice.

alternatively - chase with sangrita and pickle juice mix.

i like the straight pickle juice best. then bite off a piece of a vlassic spear.

DENNIS - 5-5-2009 at 12:38 PM

WOW....All that with good Tequila?

capt. mike - 5-5-2009 at 03:11 PM

yeah, and it wants to be good sipping stuff too.
the chasser neutralzes the tequila on contact, why i don't know but you still get the flavor of the good tequila going down but no unpleasant after effects to the extent there are any - depending on choice of cactus juice.
the 2 flavors pair nicely with each other.
dare you to try it.

all i know who WILL drink shots and separately like pickles agree it is amazing chaser effect.

Like most Mexican men, I believe good tequila should not be f****d with. When sipping the really top quality agave juice, I don't even bother with lime and salt on the side.

But, many Mexican women (and perhaps marg loving gringos of either gender ) like a Paloma. This is a quick and simple substitute for a margarita. Just pour tequila and Squirt over ice y listo.

Friends came to visit last summer and brought some Malibu Rum they had found in La Paz. They set up their tent on the front porch of our Baja casita, stayed for a week, and each night while we BBQ'd we'd sample a different concoction from our limited supplies - Malibu Rum with OJ, Malibu Rum with Squirt, Malibu Rum with diet Mt. Dew.

Citrusy piña coladas- mmm mmm!

We didn't always have ice and by the end of their visit we were rationing the Malibu and ran low on mixers but we persevered with our red plastic cups.

When we returned to So Cal I bought a couple bottles of Malibu Rum and figured with access to a blender, ice, piña and all kinds of juices, I had died and gone to heaven.

But so far I've been underwhelmed with my attempts to recreate those magical drinks of summer and discovered that the real secret ingredient are those wonderful friends and my favorite place to be.

And the red plastic cups.

And saving the best for last, as explained by Cliff Clavin, of Cheers.

One afternoon at Cheers, Cliff Clavin was explaining the " Buffalo Theory" to his buddy Norm..

Here's how it went:

"Well ya see, Norm, it's like this... A herd of buffalo can only move as fast as the slowest buffalo. And when the herd is hunted, it is the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members. In much the same way, the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells. Excessive intake of alcohol, as we know, kills brain cells. But naturally, it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In this way, regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine. That's why you always feel smarter after a few beers."

Anyway this place is close to Trader Joe's, so I went to do some shopping. They had a special juice on sale, so by the pool (99 degrees) I will have to name it BAJAGUY:

Trader Joe's Pomegranated limeade to taste
Juice of one Mexican lime
Crushed ice.

I had one (or more in) Cabo about 7 years ago and loved it!!
Stopped in at the same bar last December had another....I got the recipe from the waiter but then I lost the damn thing!!

Does anyone know how to make a "Horny Gorilla"? :?:

This isn't a joke and has nothing to do with his banana.
