The number of confirmed cases of H1N1 in Baja California jumped by seven from Friday night to Saturday afternoon. The new cases mean Baja California and San Diego each have 11 confirmed cases.

Baja California’s Secretary of Health Jose Guadalupe Bustamante says all eleven people infected in Baja were treated and have recovered. He says ten are in Mexicali. One is in Ensenada.

Bustamante warns more confirmed cases of H1N1 may come to light.

A San Diego based epidemiologist with the Centers for Disease Control, Stephen Waterman, who is in Mexico City working on the H1N1 response, says people should not be alarmed by the jump in confirmed cases in Baja California. Waterman, who directs the Border Infectious Disease Surveillance program, says the increase does not mean the outbreak is getting worse.

Baja’s Health Secretary credited cross border influenza surveillance for helping identify H1N1 cases quickly.

The Border Infectious Disease Surveillance Program has screened for flu on both sides of the border since 2005 and for diseases including hepatitis and measles for about nine years.
