Canadian Captain needs a home.

Paulina - 5-5-2009 at 08:32 PM

I received the following email from my friend Virginia who lives in Bahia. They are moving to the Mainland soon and need to find a home for a local dog that they've sheltered.

"I want to let you know of a wonderful older purebred labrador that is in desperate need of a forever home. Captain was abandoned by his Canadian dad who has a place at gecko camp. Captain would come down in a nice motorhome every year then for some reason his owner never made it back to Bahia (word is that he is somewhere in Canada or TJ) Captain is about 8-9 years and has the best disposition of any dog I have ever cared for. Very mellow, knows commands, likes other dogs, cats, kids, loves to retrieve but not crazily like a puppy. He loves walking by your side and just hangin' out.

He does very well in the house as well as outside alone, kicking back in the sun. I need to find him a home before we head north mid June. If you know anyone who would like to adopt a wonderful mellow white lab please forward his photos. We can bring Captain to San Diego late May or mid June."

What a wonderful creature. I almost feel guilty for posting here because I'm not in a position to rescue him. But I encourage folks to do so if they can.

BajaGeoff - 5-6-2009 at 12:21 PM

Oh man....he looks like such a good dog! I also wish I could take him...but we are already overcrowded with two big dogs and two cats. I sure hope someone has a place for him!

BajaGringo - 5-6-2009 at 12:53 PM

He reminds me so much of our Dakota. Labs are great Baja dogs as they love the water, people and make great and very loyal companions.

I really hope somebody can take him in...

Will talk with mother tonite. If she agrees he can live with us in Anaheim. Huge yard and a 3 y/o GWP to play with

I forgot to add Virginia's email address for those interested in giving Captain's story a happy ending. He's a cool dog, I met him over the Spring Break.

schwlind - 5-6-2009 at 05:29 PM

I have a friend who lives in San Antonio Del Mar (near Colonet) who may be interested. I've sent an email and will let you know.

Do you have any information on whether Capitan is current on his shots???

Thanks,
Linda

Baja Gringo how much does your lab weigh? good looking Dog, I have a Choc Lab and had to put him on a diet, he got up to 118# way over weight, you know the problem with Labs, they will, Run playing ball etc, and eat untill they die.

24baja - 5-6-2009 at 05:55 PM

Pauline,

I sent a note to Virginia, we will be in BOLA 5-24 to 6-4 and if she has not found a home for Captain by then, we would like to meet him to see if we bond.

Thanks,
Brett & Connie:bounce:

Captain looks just like our dog who lived to be 14 her name was Moco, she came to Oregon by way of Kodiak, AL and Honolulu, HI. We miss her very much.

Dakota is an anomaly of sorts as she was never supposed to make it past six months. When we got her at 9 weeks we had her checked out by the vet to make sure there was no sign of rear hip dysplasia. She was cleared but at 6 months she went lame. She developed front elbow dysplasia - extremely rare. It took me a week to find an animal hospital even willing to attempt the surgery to help her and we lucked out that it was a success, although she remained there in therapy for six weeks following.

Today she is almost thirteen years old, weighs 90 pounds and is stands taller over most labs you would ever see. Has been the greatest dog I have ever been blessed with...

You guys are great! Captain is one lucky dog to have Nomads on his side.

rhintransit - 5-7-2009 at 07:28 AM

a bump for Captain. looks like a real sweetie. I hope he finds a good home.

rdrrm8e - 5-7-2009 at 08:03 AM

Momma says no! She wants a smaller pooch.

BajaGringo - 5-7-2009 at 09:21 AM

This is a really great dog - if we hadn't recently adopted a doberman to accompany Dakota we would take him.

In my book there is no better breed than a Lab for somebody who loves to come to Baja. (Sorry Diane)

But I am biased...

If you have a Lab and are near the water you will quickly discover that they are in the water all day. Just keep a hose with a shower nozzle nearby to wash off the salt when day is done.

Looks like Captain just came out of the water in these photos...

24baja - 5-7-2009 at 11:45 AM

We are going to visit him if he is still in BOLA at the end of this month and if we bond may be able to take him. We want to make sure he would be happy with us, and that he will be good with our cat. He looks just like our dog Moco who passed away several years ago. See BajaGringo we do have something in common, we like the same kind of dogs (haha inside joke). Connie

rpleger - 5-7-2009 at 12:08 PM

I've too many dogs already....Both cruisers,

BajaNuts - 5-7-2009 at 01:40 PM

If I understand the original posts, Captain came down on several trips in a motorhome, and on one trip he was left behind by his owner?

Taken from the original email and post:

"Captain was abandoned by his Canadian dad who has a place at gecko camp."

I don't know any more details.

I can't believe that ANYONE would abandon that dog. :fire:

BajaGeoff - 5-8-2009 at 10:08 AM

We are moving to a new place later this month and might be able to give him a foster home until he can find a new family. My fiancee works at the Humane Society here in San Diego, so we definitely have resources to find a home for him....and if we end up falling in love with him then he can live with us!

ArroyoTaxi - 5-8-2009 at 01:58 PM

Geoff - can you keep us informed regarding this beautiful dog. I want to know how he makes out. Abandoning an animal is incredibly cruel and makes me ashamed that this dog was left behind by a fellow canadian.

bajaguy - 5-8-2009 at 02:31 PM

I have contacted the person who has Captain......hopefully I'm on the "short list" right after "24baja".

He will make a great companion for Libbie.

Fantastic news! Thank you again to everyone who kept the good thoughts going for Captain.

Paulina this is really nice of you. Glad it turned out well for Captain. He is beautiful, I LOVE old dogs, wish Pam and I could have taken him. But our hands are full with Sarah :) Thanks again Paulina.

BajaGeoff - 5-8-2009 at 03:49 PM

Sounds good Terry!

I guess that puts us in the third slot......keep me posted! Captain would be a great buddy for our two pooches:

Captain deserves a home!

bajamigo - 5-8-2009 at 06:11 PM

The line for this pooch should be around the block. We have three dogs, but the yellow lab here (Sadie) is exceptional. These animals are loving, loyal, protective...and they listen to you!

bajabound2005 - 5-8-2009 at 06:13 PM

We vote for Bajaguy because Libby really DOES need a pal!

Debra - 5-9-2009 at 04:52 AM

Good job P., why the heck didn't I think about posting here to find Captain a home????????? DUH!

Captain is a really great and loving soul. I spent about 3 months with him sleeping at the end of my bed with my pup.

For the record, he is older than he looks, he is about 10 or 11yrs. but in good heath, no hip dyspalsa (sp?) that I could dedect, as is common in Labs.....

I have been in contact with his "Dad" and there seems to be more to the story of Captain being "abandoned" "Dad" is sick, which I knew when he left Bahia in the RV with Captain, they had a roll-over accident in the RV on the way back to Canada for Dr appt.s "Dad" had to travel north and wasn't able to take Captain with him at the time, the lady that he had left him with was moving or whatever and couldn't keep him, any longer so she brought him to Bahia looking for "Dad" (what a great person to do that for him) that is how he came to be with Paulina's "friend" She and her family are moving to the mainland in June and no longer able to take care of Captian........hence the need for a home for him. I told the "friend" and "Dad" that I am prepared (God willing) to bring him home with me as a last resort of I can, and he hasn't found a home yet........but, seems, thanks to Paulina's great thinking he has many good parents willing to take him in and give him the love he deserves..........he is a great dog and will give his new family much more than he takes.

PS: Not nice Soulpatch

Great story - I love you guys...

This is a great story!

Mulegena - 5-9-2009 at 07:28 PM

Now, how about those two dogs in La Paz who need a ride to Alberta?
And remember Spook, the black cat of Asuncion?

Can we help them out, too?
and any and other wonderful Baja animal?

55steve - 5-12-2009 at 08:37 PM

Captain was hanging out with us the past 10 days - he got all of our dog-friendly scraps. I can vouch that he is a really great dog.

Cat?

JaraHurd - 5-12-2009 at 08:52 PM

I'm in for a cat. Got too many dogs already....u2u if any cats in need...dogs are outsiders only..

24baja - 5-12-2009 at 10:40 PM

Looks like Bajaguy & Libbie will be getting to take home Captain, I think that is Fabulous! Thanks Terry, Connie

bajamigo - 5-13-2009 at 11:56 AM

The transport team is in place: bajaguy, beachbum1a, and bajamigo. We will ensure safe passage to his happy and loving new home.

wakemall - 5-14-2009 at 05:51 PM

Great ending for a cool looking older dog. I have several friends that have taken Baja dogs home to the US. These dogs seem to realize what they have gained and show an extra amount of love to the owner. I have seen too many super nice dogs get hit by cars, stolen, or poisoned.
