Just like the 'Soup N-zi' in Seinfeld, where you may not be allowed to buy soup without the proper ordering criteria, I have found that you can't buy
pesos at the banks here in Loreto unless you have an account? I'm in Loreto for a couple of weeks of vacation and luckily I have friends who can make
the exchange for me. The banks say this is to stop drug money laundering....well then why not ask for my plane ticket or passport to show I'm just a
nomad who loves to spend his vacation time AND MONEY here in Baja? It will cost me more for the airfare and hotel than I will spend while here so it
wouldn't be cost effective to have me laundering a few hundred dollars of U.S. green. Ahh but the weather and fishing are great so I guess I can
handle this minor inconvenience......but it is an inconvenience and just doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Imagine that!....No soup for you-

ATMs still spit out pesos and debit your bank. No money laundering there. I really think it's more about the exchange rate. Mexicans don't want to be
handing dollars away.

I ran into this same BS many years ago in Belize. On the way in, I stood in line at the bank to change US dollars to BH dollars, no problem. On the
way out I wanted to get rid of my remaining BH for US. Sorry, all out.
