Ex Pats in La Paz

Is there a particular place in LaPaz that expats hang out?

Are there any regular gatherings?
My wife and I are coming to LaPaz on the 15th of May 2009 to look at homes and would like to talk to some other gringos who have made a move.

A lot of them hang out at Jesse's restaurant, Las Setenta Virgenes. No...wait a minute. That's that Muslim joint down the street.
Anyway, Jesse keeps moving and can be hard to keep up with. I think he plans to buy one of those big lunch trucks and just drive around La Paz selling escargot burritos. We'll just have to wait and see.

One place the local expats hang out is Grill Campestre on highway one,
up about 1 or 2 miles from the Ford agency, northbound. Afternoon c-cktail hour is popular,Owned by Louisa Higgins. I recomend the shortribs!
Jesses place, closer to down town proper is great also.

Everyone goes to Bar Aquario with the open air roof or Junto al Mar since Los Cocos, El Bucanero, and Volti are closed down. Some even hang out at La Cabaña or the bars on Esquerro like Bar Mision or El Intimo and after that always menudo at El Cielo Azul on Bravo.
During the day you can hang out at El Perla or even head out to Bill Callahans La Posada.

Edit to say that I am refering to 1973 or so :wow:

, but ftd, I ain't never heard of any of those places but La Perla & La Posada! And I ain't never BEEN to the two I've heard of! And I've been here 10 years! :lol:

texascarwasher, if you'd like to share what part of town you'll be staying in, we might be able to pinpoint a place/day/time & maybe several of the La Paz contingent could meet you & fill your heads with many-faceted & varying experiences & opinions.

Have you been to La Paz before? And how long are you staying? Are you lined up with any Realtors so far?

I wish I would have been a Nomad member a 1-1/2 years ago. I would have hooked up with the La Paz group and would have torn up the town :bounce:

However, after driving and visiting everything from TJ to Cabo for 44 years, Bahia Asuncion and La Paz are my two favorite places

One...a large city party. The other a small intimate country party. One on the Pacific, the other on the SOC :bounce:

funny thing about the big city of La Paz.......... you can hear the beat of the city across the bay.

We were out on the beach in El Comitan at 2am and you can still hear the city across the water. It wasn't BAD...... just something we country bumpkins are not used to hearing.

I swear I could almost pick out the different beats from different night clubs in the sound echoing across the bay.

Sorry, didn't mean to digress so much.

We really enjoyed our time in the La Paz area. We didn't know about BajaNomads on our first trip down there, so we missed some great times to socialize. Found some Nomads on my second trip. Great people. Hope you can make connections.

I guess if you make arrangements here to meet up with a few Nomads that might be your best bet for La Paz.
I spent a few months there a while back. There was one place but it has since closed.
A place called Paradise Found Yacht Club. It was across from the malecon near the north end. It was a hangout for the boating crowd. Alot of them lived in the bay on their boats so this was a place for a shower, internet, food and drink.
But really it was about the only real expat hangout I ever saw in all of La Paz.
That's sort of the beauty of La Paz. It's all mexican with very little signs of tourism. Just a city going about it's business.
You might meet a few people at the Cortez Club. It's a good place for a cool drink anyway.

Wow!! you've been around for a while...
El Bucanero... got into a fist fight with Dr. Rouyere there once..
El Volti.... that's where I first danced with my wife.. its been 36 years and counting.
Bill Callahan... still exists?
El Intimo on Esquerro... last time I was there was around 1970.. still open? same with aquario...
I had menudo at "Dia y Noche" after a fun night at "El Ranchito"... didn't buy anything....

Many moons ago I took a dozen or so guys on a fishing trip to La Paz. After their first night visit to "El Ranchito" somehow they lost a lot of interest in fishing. :biggrin:

There is a coffee gathering at Club Cruserous at the Marina de La Paz ... in the winter every morning .... slowing down in the summer .... they also have a book exchange ! Got my flu shot there last year .... many services for your two hundred pesos a year membership .... they will also give you a mail box and forward mail to a US Post box for you.

Many interesting persons, especially if your interests are boating.
