stun guns

bajarickster - 5-11-2009 at 03:56 PM

Anyone know if stun guns are legal in BCS and how about getting them across border when flying??? Thinking about keeping one on my boat when I overnight close to shore.

BigWooo - 5-11-2009 at 04:12 PM

I can't tell you for sure if they're legal or not, but we carry one in our truck, or camper when traveling. We've never tried to hide it. The army guys check it out once in a while but say nothing. On occasion they'll take it out and pretend zap each other, but no one has given us any problems for carrying it.

If you were driving, I'd say there was no problem. But your airline is a different story. You should at least call them and ask, before showing up and having to lose it.

So are you refering to a Taszer style gun?

I'm talking about the hand held kind, which in reality is absolutely worthless. I figure in a worst case scenario it will buy a second or two.

I think if I was going to be on a boat I'd get pepper spray. Greater range and can stop more than one attacker.

I've transported pepper spray to Nicaragua on Continental in my checked baggage in an outside pocket. I figured the inspectors would take it, but it was still there when we got to Managua. I've read it's legal to carry pepper spray in the checked baggage domestically. Wasn't sure about international though, they either missed it or ignored it.

They are sold here in La Paz.

You could sit in jail for six months while your lawyer convinced a judge that they're not illegal...that is if they're not.

Stun guns and pepper spray allowed in checked baggage:

Pellet guns are legal, I have one that shoots at 1200 FPS and will put a 3/8" dent in a steel door, I'm sure it could be lethal.

I've understood that they are limited to .177....no .22 cal pellets allowed. That's OK...I saw one the other day in a Cabelas catalog....1600 FPS, .177. That is one serious pellet.

What info, Woody? That they're legal? They sell them in the grocery stores and other places here.
The caliber question I only know second hand. Word on the streets, so to speak.
I wouldn't have one hanging on a gun rack in the cab of my truck...especially while coming upon a military roadblock. Discretion would dictate that you put it away without looking like it's trying to be concealed.

caliber size was the ?.

Good post,

I never thought about carrying a stun gun, not a bad idea for a little protection and pepper spray, that stuff is perfect for some added help. I have seen the pepper spray in action and it works. just make sure your up wind!!!

I have seen guys in Mulege with .177 air rifles, legal from what I have been told.

woody with a view - 5-12-2009 at 03:44 PM

how about air pistols? are they legal even if they resemble a glock?

Bajaguy- Just because "our" TSA allows them, says nothing as to how the Mexicans will react. Getting off the plane down South, and having hit the red light, just dunno.

Eggs-Actly.......you pay your money, and you take your chances.......

Hey...You guys better stop with this BB gun talk. someone could lose an eye

Seriously, though don't kid yourself...a BB gun would be absolutely worthless for any self defense. You're fooling yourself if you think otherwise. Yea, even at 2000 fps. there's just not enough energy in the pellet to do anything but p!ss somebody off.

Maybe if you actually did shoot someone in the eye multiple times you could do lethal damage. Hold on I'm trying to picture that...OMG I'm cracking myself up.

Go for the pepper spray and then use baseball bat in the immediate seconds after the spray. That'll take down the biggest SOB around guaranteed. Save the pellet gun for the pigeons. Just my .02

I think wasp spray you buy in cans at Home Depot is the preferred pest derrent. Innocent enough to have in your car and nasty enough to do the job. You never know when the bees will swarm. Or were you thinking something small and pocketable?
