Getting to Cabo Pulmo in the afternoon

BethM - 5-17-2009 at 12:31 PM

Hi,
Quick question about getting to Cabo Pulmo -
I have a flight that gets in around 2:30pm to Cabo airport. Hoping to rent a car, pick up some food, and drive to Cabo Pulmo that afternoon - but I've read that driving after dark is not a good idea. Does this plan seem feasible, or better to stay somewhere that night and then head to CP in the morning?
thanks,
Beth

You have lots of time to go to the grocery store and drive to Pulmo. It gets dark here around 8:00 and the drive to Pulmo should take about 1 1/2 hours.

Take your time, smell the tortillas along the way. and as you said, NEVER DRIVE AT NIGHT! (unless you run out of beer and then it is OK.)

That's even enought time to stop for a couple of beers.

Be sure you go via HWY 1 and through La Ribera, not the back way. The back way will take quite a bit longer.

The back way in is so much more fun though.

No problem, if your plane is on time!! Sunset is around 8:00pm. There is a big food store about 15 minutes from the airport, ask the car rental people for directions to the Mega store. If you take the toll road make sure you have pesos, it costs 27 pesos each way, well worth the money if you are short on time, good luck, Joanna

Don'tworry if you get turned around coming out of the airport. Have your map and watch.

We left the airport headed to CP and it was dark when we left the car agency. The one thing they said that kinda stuck in our travel-rattled brains was "watch out for the cows".
We got turned around coming out of the airport at night and very soon saw lights of a big city/town. Knew that wasn't the direction of Cabo Pulmo which is north on MX1 so we pulled a u-turn.

But their words of wisdom did help us on that first leg of the trip....WATCH OUT FOR THE LIVESTOCK!

The next most memorable part of the trip was almost getting run over by a bus while stopped at a tiny village to buy beer..........and the beer cost 100ps for a 12pack!

Honey came back to the car and said "it cost me 100 pesos for a 12-pack!" and I said to him..................................."are you complaining?"

You don't want to be heading down to San Jose on the toll road and go to the Mega. Way out of the way. It forces you to take the long, dirt road to Cabo Pulmo. Or, it makes you retrace your trip back to the airport. I guess it's a matter of what you mean by picking up some food. If you are only looking for basics, you can pick up stuff at many small markets. If you are looking to provision for the long haul, my recommendation would be to hit the Soriana north of San Jose. Your rental people will be able to show you where. Then retrace your route up highway one through La Ribera.
