Suggestions for place to surf and camp south of Ensenda

Hi I am planning a trip driving down. I wanted to ask your input on a place to camp and surf for a day and night between Punta Cabra and El Rosario

Would like to camp on the beach somewhere nice that we can get up and surf early in the morning. Safe and secluded would be nice thanks in advance

Depends on the swell, but assuming you're going this summer then anywhere west of Camalu will usually have some waves during the souths. You can then drive north up the coastal road and find some little point breaks that are sometimes decent.

Along the coastal road is Shipwrecks and Cuatro Casas. Both can get very good, and sometimes uncrowded. But like I said there are some cool little peaks up and down the area.

As far as being "safe" its a toss up...your still near a large city of San Quintin. But, I personally have never had problems there. Majority of the people have huge hearts like the rest of Baja.

Are you continuing south or driving back north afterwards?

El Rosario has Pnta Baja to the west, but I've never seen it good. Ive heard good stories about it though.

you'll be safe camping at cuatro casas.

Colonet can be good. If you have a good sand worthy 4wd, Cabo San Quintin can be good. Even if it isn't, it is fun to explore. Nobody ever goes there, except the sharks.
Look for my 6'1" Point Blanks board that blew off my truck between Quatro Casas and Colonet.

Go to you local surf shop and get "The Surfers Guide to Baja" or maybe try Amazon online. It will run down all the potential surf and give swell directions for the surf spots.

your first day if there is swell you should stop at cuatro. 15 minutes from the road and they have everything you need. if you don't want to un pack it's $10-$15 for a place to sleep. they'll even make you dinner or breakfast. Richard, Teresa and Moscar are really good people.

I second woody on that.

I was planning on trying to get to atleast San Quintin on the first day. How long do you think that drive will take? Cuatro looks nice but want to cover some more distance

woody with a view - 5-25-2009 at 12:07 PM

turn off to cuatro is 3.5 hours from the border. add one hour to get thru SQ. 5 hours to el rosario, and so on and so forth......

Yeah I wont usually disclose any spots that I actually really like, and go to, to be secluded, but, everyone knows about cuatro casas. ;)
