BajaNomad

How much $$ do you budge for a "Typical" Baja vacation?

Ken Cooke - 5-26-2009 at 10:08 PM

$500?

$1,000?

$50??

I'm curious on what most Nomads spend when they make a run to Baja.:?:

BAJACAT - 5-26-2009 at 10:21 PM

Anywhere from $700 to $1000, depending, How often I used the hotels, I pretty much do self contain trips so it's not that expensive, on my trip from San Diego to Cabo for two weeks i only expend $1,400, because i only used three motels, the rest was camping on the beach... For my quick trips, (laguna Hanson, Gd-canyon,ect ect) about $300 to $450..

BajaNuts - 5-26-2009 at 10:27 PM

ok- I'll bite-

our first trip was a family vacation, (did not know about BajaNomads at the time.............unfortunately for us).

Private small casa in La Paz area at $500/week x 4 $2000
car rental- $32 a day for 28 days $ 900
RENTAL car rentaL insurance- (DID NOT COUNT ON THIS ONE) $26 a day $730
meals and etcetera- "inconsequential compared to the car insurance."

Baja experience..................PRICELESS.

I remember someone saying that they spend about $1000 whether they stay in hotels or camp for free. I probably spend a little bit less, but it seems to be the same no matter the style of lodging and transportation.

cost

BajaDanD - 5-26-2009 at 11:15 PM

We spend approx $1000 weathe we stay in hotel or not one way or another we find a way to spend it. The time off work costs us aprox $1000 So $2000 for the whole trip.

TMW - 5-27-2009 at 07:11 AM

It may depend on how many cops you gotta pay off. But Bajacat is right. It depends on how many nights in a hotel or more exact the price of the hotel. Next is the amount of traveling you'll do to figure gas cost. Then meals, eat in or make your own.

David K - 5-27-2009 at 07:17 AM

Wow... the rich and famous on vacation!

Gasoline is the biggest expense, food next, at least when we go camping in Baja... Last weekend cost less than $200 for the four of us.... We live about 300 miles from Shell Island, which is closer than many of you to your favorite Baja destination.

mulegemichael - 5-27-2009 at 07:30 AM

typically spend between $1000-$2000 for a three week stay when i bring my buds down; gas, food, pacificos and vodka...did i miss anything?....luckily, we have a casa in mulege so i don't count that as an expense,(altho it is).

msteve1014 - 5-27-2009 at 08:13 AM

Don't forget about the fishing. Paying for the boat, guide, and tip is the biggest expense on our trips. 5 or 6 days fishing on a 2 week trip adds alot, but thats why we go.

Martyman - 5-27-2009 at 08:13 AM

Around $500 for a week. That is...if I can get my buddy Ned, to buy the c-cktails!!

Bajagypsy - 5-27-2009 at 11:07 AM

It all depends if we bring the kids or not, my husband and I have done it on under $1,500.00 for three weeks, bring the kids and costs go up!

Neal Johns - 5-27-2009 at 11:13 AM

Current wife and I - One and one half weeks, gas and restaurants, misc. purchases - live in Tacoma/pop-top camper in the boonies, $300 - $400.

vgabndo - 5-27-2009 at 11:49 AM

Disallowing any unforeseen expenses. Our own boat, no accomidations, two people, diesel both ways, a few restaurant meals, fishing licenses and boat permit, propane, water...about $500. a week for a month or six weeks. We don't buy alcohol or other drugs.

Wow, if I had some of those numbers I would run away from home. The past 8 years in my VW van I have been living on $300/mo. Just went to $400 for the upcoming trip. And, I don't miss a meal, beer,or party. I have learn to "hole up". Takes a lot of will power.

Bajahowodd - 5-27-2009 at 02:39 PM

Obviously, it's all over the scale. Depends on personal choices, comfort needs and taste. Four of us could spend two weeks hitting the surf spots and spend very little. It helps to stop in a place like Walmart in Ensenada for essentials (liquor). On the other hand, we've made trips seeking out actual shelter, and they've run the gamut as well. In many of the towns, there are motels/ hotels where prices of some are double that of others. Ditto on food. In more established areas, there are sitdown restaurants that will cost just about the same as in the States. on the other end of the spectrum, there are taco stands and the like.

An observation I can make from personal experience is that i do tend to spend considerably more these days than I did years ago. That's mostly because of the availability of ATMs and merchants who take credit cards today. Mexico is relatively new to the personal banking biz as well as using credit cards. Used to have to take along a wad of cash, hoping I had enough to make the trip. Exchange dollars for pesos. Seems that with the exception of Pemex, one can almost go from the border to land's end and hardly need cash. Can't recall now if El Rosario has an ATM. But beyond there, I think San Ignacio is the only town of notable size that doesn't have an ATM. Gotta say I was shocked when I saw a bank and ATM in Vizcaino. Bet it made the folks out in Asuncion happy.

DEVEAU - 5-27-2009 at 03:11 PM

For a motorcycle trip with no support I figure $100 per day per person. Staying in hotels, some nice, some have a roof. Drinking in Bars and eating street food. Maybe 8 gallons a day of gas, some out of jugs.

Packoderm - 5-27-2009 at 04:26 PM

Just out of curiosity, how much does a session at Anthonys cost?

Bajahowodd - 5-27-2009 at 04:29 PM

No bank or ATM in El Rosario... San Quintin (Lazaro Card##as) is the furthest south in Baja Norte.

Then Guerrero Negro and Santa Rosalia would be the next two towns with a bank, heading south.

That's a question for Mr. Around The World, Fishbuck. All I've heard is the more you pay now, the less you pay later.

Yeah.....I think Packo dozed off at the keyboard and was having a dream.

Udo - 5-27-2009 at 05:40 PM

We usually budget abour $120.00 U.S. per day, although our last trip (Feb of last year) to La Paz and back cost us 1bout $1,800 U.S. We splurged abit on some B&B's

woody with a view - 5-27-2009 at 06:12 PM

gas
food
"refrescos"
panguero
=
$75/day is about right. now that "they" put me on salary i don't worry about missing $ when not working...

gas is the main drain. we always bring too much food and usually too much drink. the pangueros are our friends and we fish while they haul traps/dive, other places it's $30 per gringo.

this is for a 5-10 day expedition. 2-3 days works out to 1/2.

BajaNuts - 5-27-2009 at 07:30 PM

I just re-figured our first trip and counting airfare for 5 people and spending money, it came in over $200/day........OUCH!

that'll never happen again!

ps- Who or what is Anthony?

Yes, if you don't call beer 'food'... To me, the liquid malt, hops and barley is a great food! :light:

We (4) consumed 69 cans of Tecate on the beach and a few bottles of Dos Equis at BajaRob's (averages about 6 beers: day: person)

Fred - 5-28-2009 at 03:15 PM

DK........are you sure your math is right. I was a math major in college and I thought Baja beer time was more like 6 beers/hour.

dtbushpilot - 5-28-2009 at 03:30 PM

Budget?.......what's that?

24 beers in a case, 24 hours in a day........coinsidense?......I think not....dt

:bounce::bounce::bounce::yes:

I am speaking in 'averages'

Actually, we consumed more as Kelly is not a beer drinker and only had a couple each day.

Fred - 5-28-2009 at 04:43 PM

dt.............thanks for that new info. It was hard before to figure it out when they only had 20 beers to a case and the day was still 24 hours.

woody with a view - 5-28-2009 at 05:27 PM

yeah, it really peees me of that there are ONLY 10 ballenas in a box. who had the dumb idea for that???? :light::fire::fire::fire::fire::light:

Mexitron - 5-29-2009 at 07:27 AM

In 1984 my cousin and I did a five-day trip driving as far south as Guerrero Negro...our cost for the entire trip was $60! Gas was 25 cents a gallon, beer was $2.40 a case (and we didn't skimp there!), tequila $3.00 a bottle, salsa 10 cents a can, etc, etc...no hotels of course but had the time of our lives surfing and fishing.

Nowadays need to budget at least $300 to $400 for a similar trip.

Martyman - 5-29-2009 at 09:52 AM

In 1979 I took trains and busses to Guatemala for 3 months...$400usd

Uhhh, aren't there 12 ballenas in a box? Do the bottles start to get blurry for you after the ninth one, Woody? :o:lol:

capt. mike - 5-29-2009 at 12:08 PM

trip based on 2 of us, 3-4 nites gone

transportation = $500 (gas only) depending on how far south

rooms about $65 a nite avg
food about $25 PP/day
beer about $5-10 a day (unless i am at Frambes where it is free :light::biggrin:)
wine about $15-20 pp/day and we try to bring our own.
chilled chard in the mid afternoon and good reds after sun sets.

margaritas - $7 per each at Serenidad - Alex's jumbos with 6-7 shots each one free pour - never a jigger. Deduct from other drinks if you have 2 margs.....:wow:
