¿What's in a Name?

 Pages:  1

bajamigo - 5-29-2009 at 05:24 PM

I'll be the first to admit I need to get a life, but I was wondering about the Nomad handles that we use to identify ourselves. Many of them are very clever, and I thought it would be interesting to learn how and/or why you chose it. If the meaning of your handle isn't obvious, maybe you could unlock the mystery.

fishbuck - 5-29-2009 at 06:01 PM

Okay, I'll play...

My real name is Michael Scott Buckau. My last name is german in origin. But it's pronounced Bucko. Like the french -eau or eaux name ending. Think nouveau or bordeaux. Don't ask me how that happened.
Anyway my dad was about half Potowatomie indian on his moms side and the other half french canadian. My grandad was full german.
So my screen name is a little wordplay and a pseudo indian name made up of part of my last name and my strong disire to catch fish.
Fishing is right near the top of my list of favorite things to do.
Also an indian "buck" is synonymous to an indian brave or warrior.
So it's kind of like "Running Bear" or "Sitting Bull" or "Fishing Buck" or ... Fishbuck!

Mulegena - 5-29-2009 at 06:12 PM

Residents of Mulege are called Muleginos in Spanish.

I'm a chick, so Mulegena

(I like this spelling, leave the last e not change to i )

My last name is a german mess. Hard to pronounce. It looks like woooosh - so why not just make it sound like woooosh and stop torturing everyone. No one likes to stumble over names so it was an easy solution that put people more at ease. It's fun for a lot of reasons.

toneart - 5-29-2009 at 08:33 PM

OK. I'll play show and tell:

toneart=

My name is Tony.
I am a multidisciplinary artist.
Included in my work are visual arts, music and writing.

Tone is a play on my name, and also pertains to an element of music, the mood of a story or the effect in choice of colors, or maybe a monotone.
Art wraps it all together. :smug:

DENNIS - 5-30-2009 at 05:53 AM

My real name is Buelah but, I like DENNIS better. I'm a huge Black Chinese woman who cooks churros at the Bufadora mall and have to be ingognito 'cause I don't have papers. Well...I have some papers but, not the right kind. I think they're newspapers. Not sure.
Anyway, c'mon out to the Buf and I'll split a churro with you.....right after you pay for it.

[Edited on 5-30-2009 by DENNIS]

bajamigo - 5-30-2009 at 06:25 AM

Geez, and I thought DENNIS was "SINNED" spelled backwwards.

David K - 5-30-2009 at 06:54 AM

Yah, David K is my name... well, the K is my last name initial (duh)... If you say beer and change the b sound to a k sound, you say my last name. It is Kier, which is Scottish. Our coat of arms is a black cross surrounded by four red roses. My relatives (great uncles) were in the construction business... built dams as well as other buildings, such as the Serra Museum and Balboa Navy Hospital, both in San Diego. My dad and his dad were dentists. General Rodriguez, when he was governor of Baja California, was a patient!

In high school, the kids would call me 'Baja' ('Hey Baja') after they made a deal out of my Baja guidebooks, in the school newspaper.

My CB radio handle back in th 70's was 'The Baja' (you know, as in Breaker 1-9 for The Baja)... My nephews called me Uncle Baja!

I thought any name, with Baja added to it, would be a real common practice on a forum: 'Baja Dave', for eaxample so I just used my real name (to be different)! :bounce:

Sorry Fred but your post reminded me of the 1963 Plymouth Belvedere 4 door sedan with a faded paint job that I drove for a while during high school. It was such a plain car compared to my buddy's Cameros, Mustangs, and GTOs that I named it Fred. It did have a big back seat though, which came in handy at the drive-in.

Why k-rico? j-rico was taken. ;D

The Baja part is simple. Wouldn't be here if I didn't love the place. As with some others, my actual name, Howard, was already taken. Over the years, there have been times when folk, sometimes playfully; sometimes not so much, would refer to me as Howodd or Howeird. I flipped a coin.

Paula - 5-30-2009 at 01:08 PM

Well, my name is actually Paulina, but that was already taken, and I wasn't reading a good book at the time like Kate was so I didn't come up with a creative name like Morgaine, which is lovely by the way...

Actually, I've been Paula since I was a freshman in high school. I found it traumatic to introduce myself just once a year in grade school, having everyone making a puzzled face and saying huh... what kind of name is THAT? So I shortened it to make myself seem more "normal", and avoiding 7 difficult introductions on the first day of school, moving from class to class.

So here's to ya, Paulina, you're a more fearless woman than I am ! It's a beautiful name, and sometimes I wish it were still mine.

bajabound2005 - 5-30-2009 at 03:13 PM

It was September 2005 and we were bound for Baja for a 3 month stint to test the waters. We took our then 2 dogs (now 3) with us -- had a license plate frame that said "Baja Bound Hounds".

Went back to Calif in December, sold the house, packed the goods and moved to Baja forever.

thebajarunner - 5-30-2009 at 03:35 PM

Back in "the day" Parnelli got Firestone to develop a special tire for pickups and big rigs racing in Baja.
It was very tall, had a very narrow tread and a large flexible sidewall.

The tires were called "Baja Runners"

We used the tires with a lot of success,
and after every race my tire guy, the late Jack McCoy, would take them off and sell them to kids for their street rods.

Just possibly the worst street tires they could buy, but they loved the profile, and no one seemed to mind that the soft compound wore out real quickly.

BigSkyGuy - 5-30-2009 at 03:37 PM

I was going to use my real name, but some idiot has already used it.

So I used this one, because my other home is in Montana, the Big Sky Country.
So, who is this "Don Alley" character, anyway?

Osprey - 5-30-2009 at 03:46 PM

I watched the osprey, the fish hawk stoop, dive at incredible speed, then brake just in time to sink his lethal talons into a fish swimming on the ocean's surface. Most of the time he barely enters the water, struggles mightily skyward a meter or two then shakes the water from his feathers, banks and climbs to find a perch where he can pick the meat from the still writhing prey -- soft meat first, eyes, tongue, belly and gut. The whole process seemed somehow poetic to me.

ok- for "BajaNuts"-

hubby found this forum, and registered us before I even knew about it. I was flying solo on La Paz and happened to meet LongLegs and Comitan in person through this forum while in La Paz. And it was my pleasure to meet them!

I've done 95% of the posts. that's why the avatar says BajaNuts1-

right after he registered, someone asked about the name and his reply was something about..."well, I guess I'm just Nuts about Baja."

I suppose I could register my own name, something like-----

It was funny in the begining how some people would think I was a female because ferna ended with an a
The change to fdt was because a good friend, also from the amigos board and the first person I met from that board was lorenzo de baja, we met one day for lunch at Cien Años in Tijuana and had a lot of fun. He changed his handle to ldb and when he retired from the boards I changed mine to fdt.
That's my story and I'm sticking to it!

I do miss Lorenzo... He loved the Baja history as I do... We traveled twice to Baja together. Here is Lorenzo meeting Mike Humfreville at the San Clemente Pier meeting that Timothy Walker and I organized... That's when I met Ferna!

My weird mind: I read your name as the question, "Baja Who Would?".
Answer, "Baja? Nomads Would!".

How odd is that?

Original name is Liberty Belle, but called Libbie.....HOWEVER in certain areas of Punta Banda and Ensenada known as "Flan Breath"........

While the humans were eating dinner and drinking wine, this cute little blonde managed to locate and sample the COSTCO Choco-Flan in the kitchen..........
