camping at Abre's

landyacht318 - 5-31-2009 at 01:00 PM

Is the camping situation still the same as it was at Abre's in 2002?

I have good memories of the 2 months I spent there.

Mexitron - 5-31-2009 at 02:05 PM

Lotsa houses there now...probably have to camp on the next point down, but I'm not to sure, its been a few years for me too...

landyacht318 - 5-31-2009 at 02:31 PM

Are the 3 palapa's on 'the point' gone?

dtbushpilot - 5-31-2009 at 02:34 PM

Where is Abre's?......dt

landyacht318 - 5-31-2009 at 03:28 PM

I was deliberately being obtuse as some resident gringos and locals indicated they'd rather not see an increase in the amount of visitors.

The horses might already have left the barn, but keep your eyes open

dtbushpilot - 5-31-2009 at 03:34 PM

Never mind then.......dt

It was nice to meet you and Janna too.

Most people mistakenly think it's a "low maintenance" hair do. It's true that I don't have to comb it but I do have to shave it every day. Oh well, I'm shaving my face anyway, I just have a little more face than most......dt

Oh, there.......didn't know it was a secret, I'll keep it under my hat along with woody's secret croaker beach:lol::lol::lol:...dt

BooJumMan - 5-31-2009 at 05:17 PM

Haven't been there since I was about 10. So, 17 years might make it look a little different. I'll be staying there for a few days in August.

Sure it will still be nice though. Never seemed to be much a of a secret spot over the last 20 years though in my opinion.

Abre's is no secret... paved highway to there...paved main streets with fancy sailboat streetlights...

Oh dang, cat's outta the bag. Another completely unknown never before heard of surfspot wrecked by David K. Good going. :P It's a good thing I don't know what your truck looks like.

But seriously though, I just wanted to know If I could still respectfully camp at the point for free without being hassled by belligerent ex pat land leasee's or meth addicts.

BTW where's this secret croaker beach?

NOT ME! (This time)... See Baja Warrior's post way above mine... I used the same 'secret' code name for the place as you did... Geeze, I can't get a break around here!

oldjack - 6-1-2009 at 07:36 AM

what's the big secret.... it is a known fact among frequent visitors that the "secret" croaker beach is immediately south of the "secret" halibut beach which is 6.237 kilometers from the "secret" surf beach... so there!!!!! btw dk has encrypted the gps locations within his avitar many times in the past...

David K - 6-1-2009 at 07:39 AM

Yah... what he said!:light::lol:

Not so great for camping anymore. Most lots seem to have houses on them, so it's a bit like camping in a neighborhood. Chelo rents clean rooms for not very much money.

shari - 6-1-2009 at 08:25 AM

there are dozens of awesome places to camp beetween Abre and Asu...like close to san hipolito or at the lighthouse there...where there is also a break...or los chorros here.

Be advised that this whole area is in the Vizcaino Biosphere Reserve and I have been notified by the Reserve director that everyone must pay the park fees for all activities like surfing, camping, biking of $5 a day...you are supposed to buy a bracelet. Supposedly the Reserve is setting up an office in Asuncion where you can get them and will have a park warden named Jaime patrolling. This applies to sportsfishermen, kayakers, hikers etc. so if you plan to be in the Mulege county area for more than a week, it would be better to get the passport deal.

There is a yearly "passport" you can buy for around 260 pesos that allows you access to any park in the country for the year....here is a link for it http://www.conanp.gob.mx/pasaporte.html

I believe that Loreto also has this system. I have solicited more info and will be posting it when I get it but just to warn you in case Jaime wanders into your campsite to collect the fees...now you know why.

Camping south of town 1/2 way to Renes was free the last 3 summers.

Local and federal inspectors "visited" us to see if we had taken abalone or lobster. There are numerous left points all over the area.

Chat with a local before you paddle out at Razor's at low tide.

The flies were "plague like" in late July and the winds can ROAR.

Stop by Chelos...she's a gem

Cheers

Many a layman thinks the direction they are seeing the wave travel from shore is the ride direction. I've heard this before.
