Mexico wants more eco-friendly beaches
MEXICO CITY -- Mexico plans a beach clean-up to meet international standards, a news report said Friday. The country's environmental agency wants to
win certification by the U.S.-based Clean Beaches Council, becoming the first country to take part in its Blue Wave program, Reforma newspaper
reported. The nonprofit organization's approval lets resorts fly a blue flag, which tells tourists that the water and beaches are safe, clean and
environmentally friendly, officials said.

It doesn't say much for actually controlling the actual polution as I can see lots of ways to subvert the intent of the blue flag (can you imagine
which hotel would be disposed to put out a red one during Semana Santa?), but I guess it's a step forward.-Stephanie
