Bumper crop

These little guys are hatching all over El Municipio de Loreto right now. The big rain last October made for big grass which made for big quail carryover which makes for the current explosion of quail chicks.

They don't get fed, and as soon as they hatch must follow their parents to learn where food is. The catch is that the parents can cross streets to move from cover to easy food, while the chicks are still too small to vault the curb from down on the pavement. I picked up 8 yesterday and put them over the curbs. I saw lots of others who were making the jumps OK. What a trip, to be led over a cliff by your parents. Kinda like humans.

This one needed a boost. Probably hatched the night before.

Makes me hungry. I think I'll grill up a batch of the grownups for dinner tonight.

The small ones aren't as crunchy, though.

How many do you think will fit on a skewer? :O :?:

I once made a mistake of picking a baby quail up and bringing it home, thinking it had been lost. I read right away that was a bad idea. But, what you are doing seems like a good thing!! Nice job.
