BajaNomad

For only those who are owned by dogs

DianaT - 6-10-2009 at 07:46 PM

Our dogs so love Baja, and our little one may be grounded for while. Tomorrow we see a specialist to see if she needs knee surgery; we will do what is necessary, but worry so much about our special little rescued angel.

Maggie Mae, also known as Little Miss Crabby Pants, loving Baja.

Her lower jaw is slightly deformed and her tongue never fits all the way in her mouth.

The beach in Baja is her life---always loving it at full speed, and we know those paws are St. Bernard paws.

She is often over-shadowed by her big brother who likes to be quite royal and loves eveyone. Maggie is far more cautious.

To make up for being smaller, she will find the biggest stick.

And her father or that big Baja Tommy Dog will not outrun her.

She has traveled with all of us as far north as British Columbia, as far east as Prince Edward Island, and as far south as Patzcuaro in Mexico, but she really prefers her Bahia Asuncion home and the freedom she has there.

While we so hope we don't need surgery, watching her in pain and not using the one leg is very painful to me. I would rather it be me than her.

As I said, this is only for those other nomads who are owned by their pets.

Diane

BajaGringo - 6-10-2009 at 07:53 PM

It is amazing how they work themselves into our homes and lives, taking over everything. Thanks for the photos and thread Diane...

Keri - 6-10-2009 at 07:56 PM

Wow Diane love that last picture. We are owned by our cats but we love dogs too.I know what you mean I can't stand to see one of mine in pain. I wish you and your babies the very best tomorrow. Good Luck,k

toneart - 6-10-2009 at 08:11 PM

Dianne,

Paco wishes "Miss Crabby Pants" the best of luck tomorrow. Please let us know what happens. Great photos!

55steve - 6-10-2009 at 08:16 PM

Our Queensland had ACL surgery and a titanium plate screwed in place about a week ago - she is doing well...better be for $3,400!

Paula - 6-10-2009 at 08:29 PM

I hope it goes well for Maggie tomorrow, Diane.

And owned by your dog? You should have seen Fillmore today resting in a small pond at Primer Agua! I poured water over his back while our friend Elizabeth fanned him with a palm branch. We were trying to atone for having forgotten the grapes and the grape peeler!

Russ - 6-10-2009 at 08:41 PM

Here's my master:no:

Quite the stingray hunter

So far no hits

And lastly a cross eyed closeup

Mason is so cross eyed he can only catch a biscuit on a really good day:rolleyes:

DianaT - 6-10-2009 at 08:50 PM

Thanks for all the positive thoughts from those who really understand, those who forget the grape peeler for their dog, those who accept and understand a little eye problem, those who hurt for their pets, cats or dogs and those who simply understand the worry and the concern for our little Miss Crabby Pants.

Diane

BajaGringo - 6-10-2009 at 08:59 PM

Your dogs are lucky to have so faithful and loving servants Diane. I know what it is like to be in your shoes and I wish Miss Crabby Pants nothing but the very best tomorrow...

longlegsinlapaz - 6-10-2009 at 09:06 PM

My Maggie Mae is saying a little doggie prayer tonight for your Maggie Mae!:saint:

Russ - 6-10-2009 at 09:26 PM

I also wish the best for your Crabby Pants. Mason had ACL surgery in La Paz about 3 years ago and is back burning up the beaches. No titanium plate only stainless cable and a few mono lines screwed in.

lingililingili - 6-11-2009 at 06:36 AM

Good luck Little Miss Crabby Pants!

k-rico - 6-11-2009 at 07:18 AM

A couple of weeks ago my dog started to limp and within a day he wasn't letting his left rear leg touch the ground and did not want to walk at all. I'm guessing due to pain, and when I did get him to walk he was very unsteady and slow moving.

The next morning I found an encourged tick on the floor where he sleeps. He has a very thick coat so I didn't see it when I was examining him the day before.

I did some research, found pictures of the various types of ticks, and it turns out that this particular type of tick's saliva causes paralysis. Dogs can die of respiratory failure because the paralysis prevents breathing.

He started to recover the day the tick died and fell off and I treated him with Frontline to kill any remaining ticks.

He's OK now.

Because he got well the day the tick fell off I'm guessing the tick was the problem. I'm not sure if paralysis was happening or if the tick just attached itself in a spot that caused pain in the leg when he walked.

Diagnosis:

"The presence of a tick in conjunction with the sudden (12-24 hr) appearance of leg weakness and/or respiratory impairment is diagnostic.

The offending tick may no longer be attached, but a tick “crater” (a small hole surrounded by a slightly raised and inflamed area) in the skin confirms the diagnosis."

I'm not owned by a dog but my cat is very possessive.
is knee 'surgery' the only option? if necessary, something one doesn't want to think about, but an option, amputation can give a long lease on life. some neighbor have a great dog who developed bone cancer. lost a leg, but not his life. he gets around fine, running on three legs. they say he hardly slowed down and adapted fine.
I can put you in touch with them if you like.

Mexitron - 6-11-2009 at 08:19 AM

Hope your doggie gets better soon! What a lucky dog though to have the run of the beaches in Baja--we're coming down next month but we can't bring our dog Emily because of logistics....wahhhhh--she'll stay landlocked in Texas with Grandma (which isn't so bad either--she spoils her).

Well, technically ours is a "white" heeler - mom was blue & dad was red - ours came out white with blue spots. She is the smartest dog that's ever owned me.

Here is Luci a few days ago - she is doing well

I've always felt that dogs view humans as their best friends,
cats view humans as members of their staff.:lol:

My cat sleeps on the dog's bed and the dog won't move him off, just goes as lays on the hardwood floor.

But then again, I think the cat thinks he's a dog, since he was raised with them since he was found at the dump as an infant kitty. We come home and there they all are sitting at the top of the steps, 2 big yellow labs and a little black cat.

(wish I could get a picture of it some day...)

PS- best wishes to your little one

[Edited on 6-11-2009 by BajaNuts]

BajaGeoff - 6-11-2009 at 01:56 PM

Actually, I am pretty sure my dog thinks he IS human....but you are spot on about the cats.

DianaT - 6-11-2009 at 02:43 PM

Thanks for all the good thoughts---it is appreciated. And, I ALWAYS enjoy seeing everyone's dogs and yes, the cats also.

Maggie, AKA Little Miss Crabby Pants, AKA Magster the Gangster is having surgery this afternoon for a torn ACL. The vet spent a VERY long time explaining everything to us and how common this problem is in some breeds----mostly large active breeds, but unfortunately it is also common in c-ckers--and she is part c-cker.

And as some of you know, it is a genetic thing and not really caused by an injury like in humans---the ligament just deteriorates whether they are active or not.

I am a mess and just hated leaving her---I think it is so difficult because we can't really explain to her why we are doing this to her.:no:

Can't think about much else than our little gangster--(I bet many of you have more than one name for your pets)

And it is going to be a long time until she is doing this again.

Thanks again for all the thoughts and pictures---they both make me smile.

Diane

I have been accused of remembering every word and event that ever happened and told, by an unnamed source, that it is a trait of all females----they have special memories. Maybe it does not carry over to cannine females. :P:P

Vet just called and Mags is out of surgery, did well and is not heavily sedated. Vet laughed when I told her I now needed the sedation!

Can't wait to see her and poor Tommy Dog does not know what to think---there is no little dog pushing him around.

I just saw that you added a picture of your Luci recovering from the same surgery----hope she continues to do really well---

She looks like a really sweet baby. Best of luck to you and your Luci

Diane, I sent you a U2U regarding your dog. We hope and pray for a speedy recovery after surgery.

Here is more of our Chocolate Lab, LUKE!

Here he is relaxing on his new deck lounge!

He likes to also sit with us when we are outside relaxing.

All the best to Little Miss Crabby Pants!

I just told Ottis about your Maggie
He shruggred and said...If that dog is a BA dog....No problema

DianaT - 6-11-2009 at 08:21 PM

Tim,
How is Ottis doing? At least Maggie won't be able to try and intimidate him for a while. :tumble:

Bob,
Our dogs are sooooooo spoiled, but even they don't have their own patio furniture. A doggie lounge chair? That is great. Got the U2U and thanks.

By the way I have 2 dogs, a cat, one snake and one lizard.
I had 2 cats but "Helen The Cat" ,unfortunately, was fatally mauled :(:( in my drive way a month ago by 3 dogs who their owner let run loose..

Barbareno - 6-12-2009 at 05:18 AM

Hope Maggie is recovering nicely Diane. I have oodles of pet names for Ottis Patoetis. This here picture was taken a couple months back. Been awhile since I used Photo Bucket and posted a picture here. Lets see how I do. He is about 9 months old now. The only time he has been to the vet, other then his passport and shots in Vizcaino, was when he got fixed. He is still very much a puppy and one big love dove dog. Thanks again Shari.;D

Bajagypsy - 6-12-2009 at 06:03 AM

I'm so sorry to hear about your Maggie, they really are like our children. I would be devistated if something happened to our 3 dogs. I'm an animal lover, you can tell by our house, 3 dogs, 1 cat, 1 iguana, and 2 guinea Pigs.

Our mexican dog pequito, is sending love and get well wishes to Maggie. Our other two canadian dogs would, but one is a royal Wich with a capital B, and the other one I'm quite sure has down syndrome!

Please let us know how she is doing.

That is so sad and such a terrible loss. Unless it really is a killer dog, it seems that one cat can often take care of one dog, but not when they act as a pack. Again, I am really sorry for what happened to Helen, and I hope those 3 dogs are not around to take another life!:no::no:

Maggie in her doggie jail. For the first two weeks she can only come out to potty. The thing around her neck is a bandage holding on a pain med patch.

OK, she also gets to come out to sit on our laps or rest on our bed while one of us is reading.

It is a good thing she was crate trained, but she just does not like spending SO much time there.

And for any of you facing large Vet bills, Wells Fargo has one of those special 1 year interest free cards for Vet Bills over $1,000.00. It is one of those deals, however, that one must follow very closely, never miss a payment, and get it paid back on time or you pay interest back to the beginning at almost 24%.

We use these interest free offers a lot, but we are OVERLY careful with them.

longlegsinlapaz - 6-14-2009 at 06:04 PM

Diane,

I am happy your little Miss Crabby Pants is on her way to mending.

Please forgive this slight hijack:

Paco is not a barker unless there is something important to bark about.

Well, it just happened. I was here on my computer and he was barking as though he was saying, "Hey! this is really serious." It is just about dark here in the High Sierras. I went outside to see what the commotion was all about. All the other neighborhood dogs were now barking. I walked up the driveway to the road. The it was: a full grown cinnamon colored bear, just casually ambling down the road about 25 feet from me.

He kept on walking. A truck came by and he moved off the road and into the trees and shrubs. I have seen this bear before but not in the last couple of years. Even though it is cinnamon colored, it is a California Black Bear. I remember it as a cub and it had two black siblings. A bear by itself is usually docile. They aren't interested in people and they hate a dog's bark. All they want is garbage that people leave out in their trash cans. They don't hibernate in the winter anymore because they don't have to. Food/garbage is readily available.

They are dangerous when it is a mother and cubs. You don't want to be in their proximity, and you don't want your dog challenging her either.

Anyway, Paco was doing his job, protecting me and the house.
Good Boy!:o
