My hybrid is still a Toyota.

BajaGeoff - 6-12-2009 at 10:58 AM

I will be a Toyota person for life. My first was a 1994 Toyota pickup that was still running strong when I traded it in a few years back. It was super reliable and I never had a problem with it. I now have a 2005 4Runner that has been just as reliable.

Can't Decide

bajaguy - 6-12-2009 at 11:05 AM

My new Baja rig will be a Toyota 4x4, 4 door cab, but can't decide between a Tacoma or a Tundra (yet).

One of the deciding factors will be the ability to pull a 22 or 24 foot lightweight camping trailer.

Wish they would put the 4Runner V-8 in the Tacoma!!!!

I drive the Dodge if I'm going camping and the FJ Cruiser (Toyota) if I'm just traveling. We will be headed South in the Toyota pulling the Polaris RZR back down the end of the month......can't wait, need a "fishing fix" real bad.....dt

Ford Bronco, F350 & Bronco II. Also have a E150 that I sometimes bring down.

schwlind - 6-12-2009 at 11:58 AM

91 Toyota 4Runner... this baby is great... only complaint... underpowered, most noteably up the mountains between the border and Ensenada, particularly when loaded to the gills...

For those who don't know Travelpearl (Debra), her '92 is a Toyota 4Runner...

El Camote: You can voter in the 'Other' column! Perhaps those who are also driving 'Others' can say what brand/ model... Like Land Rover (The Squarecircle's ride)!

Camote, what happened to the VW Van?

DanO - 6-12-2009 at 12:43 PM

2001 Ford F150 Supercrew 4X4. 106,000 miles. Running great after replacing several ignition coils at around 95k. It's on its 3rd set of BFGs and 2nd set of Bilsteins. My only current complaints are that the steering wheel and driver's side visor are starting to fray a bit, and the rear brake noise when they get dusty is pretty bad. I did have some issues earlier, including a cracked intake manifold, a leaky head gasket and rear seal, a shot steering arm, and a broken leaf spring, but fortunately they were covered by the extended 5 yr/60,000 mile warranty (which my friendly service writer at the local Ford dealer graciously raped, providing me with replacements of the above as well as a host of other goodies). I love the feel and roominess of that truck, but after another 50,000 miles or so, I may be eyeing a more reliable Toyota. Don't tell my F150 though. I don't want to hurt its feelings.

castaway$ - 6-12-2009 at 01:11 PM

BAJACAT - 6-12-2009 at 01:12 PM

I drive a 2004 4x4 DODGE RAM, and I love it, even do is a little to big to make the Santa Maria Mission trip, but has made IT to every other place and BAJA...

'06 Ford F350 Turbo Diesel Crew SRW. First diesel -- it's loud and smelly, hmmmm. Nice.

Have 2 alarms with 2 sirens -- second siren has a backup battery and cannot be turned off without a key and almost impossible to access without tools.

Also, 2 kill switches -- impossible to find. The truck could be broken into but it'll NEVER be started and driven away. Guess it could be towed?

1989 Plymouth V-ger (that's Voyager for non-star trek people) minivan

2 tone paint, primer and blue

The 89's are notorious for bad paint. Comes off in soda cracker-size pieces. First time I noticed it I was in the carwash and these things that looked like leaves were washing down the windshield. Only trouble was, it was summer and the trees weren't shedding.

I don't worry about damage or theft, although I'd really be bummed if someone did jack my ride.

k-rico - 6-12-2009 at 06:17 PM

1991 Ford 150 longbed, 2WD, fuel injected 302 (5.0 liter) extendocab XLT Lariat, power everything, 130,000 miles with a Callen cab over camper shell. I paid $3,500 for it a few years ago. It could have 230,000 miles on it, but I don't think so.

Just finished a 4000 mile trip to the mainland. Runs smooth and doesn't leak or burn a drop of oil. Everything works.

I've had Dodge and Chevy trucks before. This Ford is the best of the bunch. The Dodge was a piece of junk and the tranny died on the Chevy.

Ford takes the lead!!

Y2K, F350 with the GOOD Ford diesel (is that an oxymarooon?). Only things to go out on me is the water pump and one injector. 157k now with numerous towing trips with trailers in excess of 8k lbs. One trip of approx. 800 miles was towing slightly over the CGVW rating of 20k. I believe that might be the equivalent of TOWING three or four Toyota Tacomas.

You cant send a Toy, to do a man's job.

Don't get him started, Bob! He's like the Energizer Bunny when it comes to ToyTalk.

BTW, there is scuttlebut around about Toyota introducing a small displacement diesel in trucks in the next year or two.

[Edited on 6-13-2009 by Hook]

David K - 6-13-2009 at 09:14 AM

Bob... if all the Nomads saw this and voted, then we would really know who drives what.

You are not going to make a decision on what's best for you based on a popularity contest, are you? It should be the best product for the job you need.

I am happy that Ford has done so well... They are the smartest U.S. car company (not taking money for Washington) afterall!

Buying a truck should not be done like how a president is picked.... don't let the popularity hysteria of any one car brand push you to make a bad choice. :light:

Research the features you need in a truck and then listen to/ read how the truck has performed.

driven many, all worked fine: VW vanagon, VW jetta, saab 9-3, toyota 4runner, subaru outback, as long as they got tires and ignition turns on, they all seemed to drive same as they do in the USA. were you expecting them to drive differently in mexico because of language or cultural differences?

best performer was VW jetta, blew the doors off the other cars. suvs and vanagon suck for traveling long highways, clunky beasts. 2wd sedans are slower on unpaved roads, but faster overall because most time is highway time.

No, one should do careful research as to what is the best truck for Baja and one's other needs, and then just like our current President was elected, the far superior choice will win.

For our current needs, our 2003 Tundra has done very well for us---but it is not built to haul very heavy loads or pull heavy trailers.

But right now, even with 140,000 miles on it, it is performing well and is paid for.

What's your mileage?

Lee - 6-14-2009 at 12:31 PM

Based on research from the SoCal Powerstroke forum, it seemed there was disparity in who got good mileage and who didn't in Ford trucks. It seemed like half of those with diesels got mileage in the low teens no matter what they did to improve things.

My PS diesel get's 19 highway, consistently, and 14 in town, empty except for a 360 pound 5th wheel hitch in back.

Bob H - 6-14-2009 at 12:39 PM

I do not worry about mileage. Just needed a truck that would do the job for me... and the F250 V-10 does it!

On that theme, make sure the truck you pick does what was promissed in all the pre-purchase advertising and not take over your life... Also, that it doesn't end up costing you THREE times more than the debt the last truck added to your life!:light::lol:

Prious to Asuncion this year, did good on washboard, sand and everything but the big topes in Guerro negro and the steep drop offs between the highway and dirt slopes in several towns (clearance issue). Fantastic ride, trouble free, fuel efficient, few emissions and carried a big load of stuff to take down to friends (old and new). Locals loved the display of electricXgasolina engine.

Wonderful, relaxed trip.. I do miss my FJ 40 a bit though, I'm just too old for it in the joints...

BajaBruno - 6-15-2009 at 10:31 PM

Perhaps someone has mentioned this, but Consumer Reports rates, in general, Fords as the best US vehicle and Toyota as the best import. It seems that Nomads are within the mainstream of savy buyers.

I am rather surprised that GM is getting pounded so badly, though. Lower than "Other"? That is embarrassing.

1989 Bronco that lives at my Baja house.

1995 Bronco that I use to drive to Baja.

2003 Excursion that I use to tow my boats to Baja.

Lee - 6-16-2009 at 07:35 AM

When Toy makes a one ton with diesel, I'll be buying one. Until then, for power, room and workability, there's just no comparison. Toy is a small truck, full size is full size.

Mileage and speed are not very good but it will go anywhere .

Cyanide41 - 6-16-2009 at 07:40 AM

I have put my Tundra through a hell of a lot and it has not given me any problems. <knock on wood>. It lacks the towing power of some of the 3/4 ton - 1 ton trucks made by the big 3. As far as 1/2 tons are concerned, I feel like you can't go wrong with a Tundra.

mooose29 - 6-16-2009 at 11:01 AM

2008 Chevy 4X4 Suburban for us. Tons of room for 2 dog's, 2 kid's, and 2 adults, along with a marine sized cooler and all our other stuff. We have been all over Baja in our rig.

'92 Chevy Silverado 2500 extended cab 4x4 with 170,000 miles on it. Not easy on fuel, but one tuff and reliable vehicle. Paid cash for it back in '94. Gas has to go a lot higher before I'm gonna spend $20 to $30 K on a newer rig.

Have you read about the 2010 Tundra with a 300+ HP engine?

From Toyota News Release

David K - 6-19-2009 at 10:07 AM

Replacing the Tundra's 4.7-liter i-Force V-8 for model year 2010 is a new V-8 that rings in with a tad less displacement but more power, torque, and efficiency. Based upon the mighty 5.7-liter V-8, still the truck's top engine, the new unit displaces 4.6 liters, 310 hp, and 327 lb-ft torque. Toyota says the new engine will boast the best fuel economy of any full-size V-8 truck V-8 when it goes on sale next month.

The 4.6-liter shares cylinder bore diameter with the 5.7 but features a shorter stroke to reduce displacement and therefore consumption. While official EPA ratings have not yet been calculated, Toyota estimates mpg ratings of 15/20, far better than the outgoing i-Force's best-case of 14/17 in two-wheel drive models. The same six-speed automatic found with the 5.7 yields best possible performance and efficiency.

1994 Ford F150 ext bed 2wd w/ 130k miles.

Well in a couple weeks it will be the first time this vehicle will drive to Baja and will be left there for our use when in town.

We were going to leave our 98 Toyota 4runner but realized it is such a great car we are keeping it up here so we don't have to buy another car. We also have a 2006 4runner...love those 4runners.

The Ford we bought in 2003 and doesn't get used much up here in CA. Anyone know how much payload this thing can carry? i'm looking at 1200lbs so far including 2 sit atop yaks.

Husband is thinking about buying this tubular lumbar rack:

My "Other":

Doug/Vamonos - 6-21-2009 at 09:22 PM

2005 Ford Excursion Diesel 4x4. Best Baja truck yet. My previous was 2000 Ford Expedition 5.4 4x4 and before that was a 1993 Toyota Extracab with Fabtech pre-runner lift. The Excursion has a 44 gallon fuel tank and gets 16mpg at 75mph, fully loaded with a hitch hauler and loads of chit on my roof. I drive in comfort from OC to LA Bay on one tank with plenty of fuel in reserve while my wife sleeps in back on a twin mattress and the two dogs are on their pillows. Still room for a cooler and a couple baskets of clothes.

Curt63 - 6-21-2009 at 09:40 PM

This is my last rig in action before I started hauling quads around and had to upgrade to the Tundra. Boy did I love that T100.

Oh geeze Bob, 43 to 40... Did you count votes in Florida a few years ago?

Did the vote counters find any of the ballots with hanging; dimpled; or pregnant chads! Looks like Ford is in the lead!

One thing is for sure, Bob's first choice (Nissan) is in last place...

Which really only means you should not let public opinion totally control what you want.

David is right, if you like what you drive, should be no problem. In my case I own toyos in the past, Last toyo truck, it was a 2003 4 door trd tacoma, but it was to small for my family(five people), so I trade it for my RAM, and now i can tell you that I love my RAM as I love my Tacoma.... It all depends on your needs and activities in Baja. Now Dodge it's tight in fourth place..

I agree. And, I didn't ever say the Nissan was my first choice, just that I was looking at them and I thought the Frontier was very nice.

I'm also looking at Toyota and Ford (F150 instead of a Ranger if I go Ford again).

:yes:Bob H

GOOD

Will you make me ride in back like how you first rode in my truck?:?:

Well, I've never been much of a joiner, but it looks like my F150 puts me in the majority club. It has sure served me well.

I drive down solo in my 24 year old Toyota with 300,000 plus miles.
