GREAT resourse in El Rorario

bombero - 6-14-2009 at 12:06 PM

While returning form a trip to Shell Beach ( near Punta Chivato) my friend John encountered a mechanical problem 60 k south of El Rosario. His dodge pu with a lance camper onboard and a boat behind, developed a crack in a flange of a steel transmission line. This was last Saturday afternoon. We left his wife and my son with his pu and headed for El Rosario in mine. We found trans fluid but was in need of another line, mechanic, or maybe a welder. Yes, a trans line for a late md dodge diesel! Luck was with us! we found Scott or locally known as Oscar. A gringo retired living in El Rosario on the main rd. He is a machinist and awesum welder. He was able to weld the flange and line with stainless and we were on our way back to the stranded vehicle in 30 minutes, A great resourse if needed . Saved our butt . As most seansoned Baja vets know, traveling with a fellow vehicle has its benifits. We had a brief thought about a fellow traveler who spent many days in El Rosario with a mechanical problem. Be sure to include Scott "Oscar" in your Baja help book!

Great resource to know about and glad it worked so well for you.:yes:

I believe it was approximately 8 days for that fellow traveler----not a fun time.

Thanks for the info

bombero, has been a nomad over 5 years and only 22 posts. He is probably the most generous person I know. He's also been coming to Pt. Chivato area for over 30 years. A wealth of info.

OSCAR: If it's the same one ???

About 3 weeks ago I was travelling North, back towards El Rosario, and had a brake failure on my Jeep G.C. We were exploring the bluffs and beaches south of there (Puerto Canoas) over some grim dirt roads many miles from no where when it happened.

We had met Oscar the day before on our way down, at Ed's Restaurant, the Large Yellow Place on your right travelling south. I think his card says "Baja's Best". They feature Starbucks coffee on their sign. Hard to miss it.

Anyway Oscar left the restaraunt to personally take us to a mechanic less than a mile from there, towards town, on the same side of the highway. He stayed with us and translated, until some temporary repairs were made so we could safely continue on. The guy (mechanic) only asked for 50 pesos, but we did a little better than that. Also gave Oscar a nice little gratuity for his trouble and kindness. He didn't want anything, and had to be persuaded..I will definetly patronize Ed's place in the future. Food & Lodging, and travel tips.
