flights to baja

airmech - 6-14-2009 at 06:18 PM

We got a new airplane with more seats and are considering ride sharing for some trips down south. Doing some calculations, for example, Bay of LA would be about$300 per person for four people from Temecula,ca and back for the airplane, fuel and landing fees. Your visas, lodging and food would be your costs. If you have an FM-? you don't need a visa.
Would consider other places.

Wow...pretty plane! Perhaps you can figure out what the costs would be to fly into Asuncion as several of our guests have asked...specially during fishing season this fall.

airmech - 6-14-2009 at 06:26 PM

will figure it out and let you know. fall is a good time for us to be able to get down there too.

shari,
looks like $425 a person unless gas goes crazy again

Geeeezzzzzzzz

beercan - 6-14-2009 at 09:50 PM

Us poor Flying Sams pilots only get $100.00 /passenger for gas and stuff.

fishbuck - 6-14-2009 at 11:27 PM

Perfect baja plane!
I logged some hours in one that was owed by Air Desert Pacific at Pomona.
I was going to use it for baja as a replacement for the Lance that I was flying.
But a guy crashed it at Lake Tahoe when the nose baggage door opened on takeoff. He stalled it and crashed right at the airport.
Ya, he was killed. So always lock the nose baggage door before takeoff.
Is it a rental plane? I have about 3 hours in an Aztec and I'd like to check out in it.
I can do it for about $250/passenger from San Diego in the Cherokee 6. Share expense.
Probably take about the same time because it's a short trip.

I can do Asuncion for about $350/seat.
San Diego-San Filepe-Bahia Asuncion.
$75 is a day's fishing in B.A.

all chapters allow full gas sharing

total the fuel and divide by all seats. blend in landing and airport fees. Bob - yur flying for foothills or Tucson?? should be a straight split.

and - if you are an owner or even a renter you can deduct the operational cost of the bird as a charitable donation 501c purposes. less the gas contribution you received.

but it is all about giving, not breaking even or covering costs.

Airmech - sweet AZtruck. my friend just had his painted in Texas and sent me pics this am. i'll post one here. total rehab engines panel the worx. it will now replace his 210 for baja.

capt. mike - 6-15-2009 at 07:59 AM

plus......you can never charge enough to cover contingent liability if you have an incident, and no amount of smooth limits insurance is sufficient.
even waivers are at best a short stop gap.
the lawyers representing the families will sue you, your estate, the AC mfgr et al.....and it doesn't matter who is at fault or what happened. the litigation alone will break you.

i quit 3rd party flights a few years ago. only family and close personal friends now. plus Sams due to their umbrella that covers the flights and what participants have to affirm to. There is no money upside to charters today, even part 135 work - that's why no one is doing it - it costs too much to turn a profit. think of all the 121 carriers in mexico that drop out time to time. it ain't cause they make money, cause they can't.

airmech - 6-15-2009 at 12:31 PM

Yeah, we don't normally do it either. I am only doing this for my wife to build some time. She's at 700 hrs and when she get to 1500hrs we probably wont do it anymore.

The baggage door issue is taken care of. We just got done doing the Service Bulletin to modify the door. It has to be locked in order to pull the key out. (As long as you don't leave the key in it)

We just went through it too. New paint, props and governors just overhauled, new tires and brakes. Less than 300 on the engines.

It's a current IFR and 135 airplane. Not a beater or a rental.

i think the Aztruck is perhaps one of the best baja planes ever built, i'd have one in a heart beat if i could afford two Lyc 540s up front drinking 100LL c-cktails at 14 gph per.

hope to see you and your bird down south one time.

we prefer panga fishing. it gives us another reason to spend time in baja. and the elbow room is soooo much nicer.

I've been watching the fishcount real close. They are getting a few albies. But this time of year it's all single and double blind jigstrikes. So you can only catch a fish when it's your turn to troll. They rotate to the next team after a hookup.
And if you didn't get one it will be a long time until your turn rotates around again.
The fish don't school as good this early so it's hard to get one on bait. And the fish are still small.
The only other game is kelp paddy yellows.
I did see some yellowfin in New LoAnn's count on one day.

It might be fun to fly in the Aztec for some Bola jurel.
Can I ride up front and log it as duel?
Can we leave on Saturday at noon, fish Sunday morning and fly back Sunday afternoon?
I mean, I know you can, but will you?

You want elbow room? Let's split Guillermo's super panga and go to the big island!
