Wrong place for dialog?

Sharksbaja - 6-15-2009 at 09:45 AM

"Corky,

What post(s) have you reported to me recently as having issue with - and/or having broken the rules of the board?

How serious should I take this "plea" of yours when you have not reported anything - nor (as an almost 5-year "veteran" here) even showed the consideration of posting these statements in the proper forum for board comments and/or issues (and thusly I've now moved it there, as I move posts to the proper forum on the board almost every day).

Maybe you were more concerned about your statement being seen by everyone on here than following the system in place for such concerns???

Doug "

Oh that would have to be the Turtle thread that I recommended you address early on. Od course I have no influence on what you let stand obviously, and those type of dirty posts with ill-content will get views but not applause.
I won't post the U2U I sent about that thread but you can if you like. I was concerned from day one.

You are absolutely correct, I don't rat out people and posts to you very often but I have reported a few.

It has been very tumultous on this board and I believe part of that is because we lack a full time mod. Yes, 5 yrs of viewing and interacting does give me a little knowledge of what goes on in here. Pardon me for not posting in the appropriate place. Would you have dead-ended it there as well?

Excuse me for not being more private but you never followed thru as indicated in your U2U message, or did you?

If you want to censor me for stating the obvious then do it. It's not just me that would appreciate a little more hand-slapping.

I look at my post as not only constructive critisizm but as a plea to mute distasteful political words and innuendo. Maybe you haven't noticed but there have been a number of newbies that feel overwhelmed or otherwise intimidated by heavy-handed know-it-alls who tend to muck up a thread with mean spirited talk.

I would like to hear your opinion.

So much for dialog I guess. I simply asked you if there IS a moderator(besides you) that can moderate your forum. You certainly did not have to cut me off.

End of explanation. Thanks for listening.

btw Doug, I believe I have contributed greatly to your forum with plenty of consideration.

Doug gave you what I consider to be an unbiased answer, one of the few I've seen.

Quit whining, get over it.

Sharksbaja - 6-15-2009 at 10:47 AM

Jack, is your name Doug too?

You my friend epitomize my posts point exactly. Why he doesn't dead-end you is beyond me.

Love your continuing negativity the most. (snif snif)

Bajajack - 6-15-2009 at 11:02 AM

So you think your Positive Drivel is more important, maybe you should rethink what the purpose of a Forum really is.

DENNIS - 6-15-2009 at 11:15 AM

Anybody around here care to join me with a frosty Pacifico? It would be a better choice than what's inevitible. :tumble:

Russ - 6-15-2009 at 11:36 AM

I'd like to say something profound here but I seem to have misplaced it.... again:no:
So I'll borrow one of comitans' signature lines that I would be served well to remember often
“The sincere pursuit of truth requires you to entertain the possibility that everything you believe to be true may in fact be wrong.”

Do tell!

Woooosh - 6-15-2009 at 12:35 PM

I've put myself in self-censorship mode and just delete the posts people don't seem to like. Just like the real mexican media. It really doesn't matter to me whether the thread continues to make sense after that...

Some people just need a shot before the Pacifico.

Sharksbaja - 6-15-2009 at 12:40 PM

"delete the posts people don't seem to like"

Which people? How do u know they are people?:bounce:

Betta make that TWO shots and a beer!

arrowhead - 6-15-2009 at 12:54 PM

It seems to me all the negativity is coming from posters with 6 or 7 stars under their names.

Cypress - 6-15-2009 at 01:11 PM

Being honest is negative? Baja is a great place! Love the boonies, the ranches miles back up in the mountains. The local people are fantastic. Isn't that positive? If I hadn't invested $4k+ in fishing gear; kayaks, racks, etc. based on all the positive fishing reports from the Sea of Cortez, I'd be one happy so-and-so. Just trying to see that some other rookie doesn't do the same.

tripledigitken - 6-15-2009 at 01:18 PM

Cypress,

$4000 is all the separates you from being a happy guy. Consider you got off cheap.

Ken

Hmmmmm, really.... ALL?

Well that's easy, just ban all with six or seven stars.: Is that negative too? Good grief Charlie Brown!

One mo thang. WTF happened to everyones sense of humor? I was shocked to see nobody except Shari appreciated my "Whac a NoMad poster.

See that turtles' head sticking up? Give it a whack!:lol:

Whatever, different strokes for..................................................................:rolleyes::rolleyes:

Time to go mow the lawn now,........ a positive thang!:P

Ken, You're right. I got off light.

toneart - 6-15-2009 at 02:00 PM

Corky,

See my recent (today's) post on this topic in Ken Cooke's string, "Why has Baja Nomad become such a depressing place?"

Basically, I think the Negativity problem is not unique to The BajaNomad.

I will stay out of the dialog between you and Doug.:smug:

Sharks, I loved the Whaca Whaca. I am in awe of your ability to create such stuff and to post it. Wish I could do things like that and not just for the board but for use in my writing projects and for just sending stuff to friends I left behind in the U.S. of A. I'm jealous so I didn't post at all.

On the humor front, I have about a million insurance jokes I could post. No, no that's for Insomniacs Unanimous. Get those groups mixed up. I'm old.

It seems we need

humour is one of the things I love about this board...but certainly our sense of humours vary considerably...so what....
this sandbox reflects the state of the world so I try to ignore the negative bits, laugh at the jokes, look for the goodness in life and contribute what I can. We must exercise tolerance but not tolerate outright abuse.

David K - 6-15-2009 at 06:01 PM

This is part of what I posted in Ken Cooke's 'depressing' thread, as it applies here, too...

HOW to keep the posts positive, and Baja or Nomad related...

IGNORE the stuff that doesn't interest you and PUSH the report button if you see a clear VIOLATION of board rules... foul language, personal insults and name calling, off topic (wrong forum) posts included.

DOUG needs us all to HELP him keep this place informative and friendly: PUSH the REPORT button, because the limited time DOUG has to read Nomad, he reads the REPORTS first to clean up any mess.

Instead of posting complaints about Nomad... DO something to help, push the REPORT button when a thread goes bad.

Doug believes as adults we should be able to use his forum without a lot of babysitting... Unfortunately, a few Nomads have no responsibility over their own actions, don't know how to delete bad posts, or just like to throw some gas on a fire...

I have a couple times for fun, responded to some outrageous posts... but all in all, I am here to read about Baja and share my knowledge or resources I have, happily!

Sharksbaja - 6-16-2009 at 01:51 AM

I spend or have spent a lot of time trying to rile Nomads. Hey, I'm a self-proclaimed antagonist. I can't help to hold others accountable for their words. Those with a personal agenda other than lucid Baja(or Nomad) dialogue can't withstand the scrutiny of the fervent Bajaphobe. They will fade away or be banned accordingly.

I have struggled to maintain as a legit contributer because of the loathe I felt towards a few breathen who said after our huge losses in Baja that it was what we deserved. Because we had a place on the river. I gave out TOO MUCH information. Go back 3000 posts or so, it was a different world then. I think I did good things here,

I have always been amazed how people react during disasters and emergencies. Forums reflect those varied responses.

To me, I felt/feel the need to back way off from posting meaty threads and collections of photos or graphics designed to tantalize you, that can take hours to compose. It's sort of like getting rewaded when so many click on to see your post. It's very cool to be acknowledged for your work. That is why I admire so many Nomads and I stick around. I get education and entertainment and hope I make a few friends along the way and shamefully, a few that went another way. No longer Nomads or friends because of ????

Something I doubt I'll ever understand. It does hurt when we lose good Nomads. Funny they aren't mentioned more often but I remember them well just the same. They helped form the place, we all do.

Anyhoo I used to spend a lot of time sharing photos and trip stuff and "other" interesting or reactive messages but so much negative hype and worry news about Baja kinda took center stage fer a good spell..

Really, how can you compete with severed heads hanging over Blvd 2000, I mean really...

Yeah Beatnik, some of my posts have been called lame and a hundred other adjectives. :saint:

Perhaps you are right and Doug is two. ;D

I have the ability to change, do you?

Maybe I will......:) No more filler? Hmmmmm

naw, forget it.... hey dude, er, Mr. Beatnik Sir. I'm gonna post a link(s) to hundreds of photos and graphics I've shown here and host separately on another server. That is a courtesy to Doug in itself.
Call it whatever you like but I do it cause I like to share. JUst like DK!:P

end of sermon

Corky,

My opinion is there are some anger issues involved here that may somehow be ill-targeted.

I'm also of the opinion that your highest moment here was in the middle of possibly your biggest anguish. Above all else, kudos to you for demonstrating such high-character. A picture says a thousand words:

Sharks I liked your Whack-A-Nomad. Can you make it with pictures of Nomads popping up and going back down. That would be a hoot.

Sharksbaja - 6-16-2009 at 12:34 PM

Ha, thanks David. I can do those animated Gifs but the old programs I use simply take waaaay too much time. I'll leave that to you because you have some serious talent that way.

Oh btw, that turtle represents the turtle thread.
------------------

Yes that pile of equipment was purchased w/Nomad donations I collected here that totaled nearly $4000.00. I delivered them to Bruce Leech who then took them over to the Cuerpo de Bomberos at snapped those photos.

I really enjoyed doing that and Doug was spot-on when he said that during my tenure here that was the highest and lowest of emotions for us and many others. One more thanks to all that contributed. Thank you for remembering. I heard they made good use of the stuff when Norbert hit last year.

DanO - 6-16-2009 at 12:48 PM

Money well spent. Thanks again, Corky, for getting our contributions to where they were needed most.

Martyman - 6-16-2009 at 12:58 PM

All this talk about beavers and turtle heads gets me excited :smug:

Yep!

toneart - 6-16-2009 at 01:14 PM

Corky set up the Hurricane John relief fund. My casita was also flooded. The water was up over the eaves and it came in a destructive surge. Anyway, that was when I first joined Bajanomad. It was the only source where we,who were not there at the time, could get any information, thanks to Mulege Marv and Cathy. They had the only satellite internet service that was still up and they kept us all updated regarding the damage, in town and also along the river.

Back to Corky. Our houses are in the same complex along the river. He set up the fund through his business and people could pay through paypal. I sent him some money and you saw Doug's photo of the result. It was a water pump that was donated to the Bomberos. They were heroic during the flood with rescue operations, as were the police and Mick too, who owns the dive shop. He rescued many people. Of course, many others contributed, and I think that that is a testimonial to the credibility Corky(Sharks) has on this forum.

We attracted some really nasty, negative newby posters who seemed to be very familiar with our river community and us personally. They insulted us; called us stupid and kept up the venom until they were banned. Unfortunately, one or some of them keep popping up periodically with different names and avatars. I do believe some of the current crop of flamers are the very ones who were here during that time. Their only agenda is hate and negativity.

I had posted updates after I went down and did the clean up. My tone was informative and positive...praising how the community came together. For that I was labeled "a whiner". Now, that is all water under the bridge....literally! :o

There are times when we Nomads can get frustrated and want to pull out. I have found out that a time out period helps and during those times I lurk. Then I see familiar good people, new old friend Nomads and it feels like family again, and I return.

The trolling flamers are part of a new culture that is now everywhere on the internet.

Most Nomads aren't that way.

Sharksbaja - 6-16-2009 at 01:34 PM

Yes we won't forget that tumultous time(s). Or the folks that helped out.

Actually Tony we(Nomads) provided 2 fire ready pumps. One was a large volume water pump for filling tanks from the river and the other was a mud pump capable of pumping mud and sand plus 200' of discharge hoses and 40' of suction hoses plus connectors and strainers. All good stuff.

Trolls suck!

Yep! Trolls suck!

Too bad we couldn't have turned the trolls upside down to suck the water and funky mud out of our communities, instead of having to buy those pumps. Next time (heaven forbid), I will hold their ankles, and Corky, you can beat the living sh** out of them. Make em work!:lol:

Osprey - 6-16-2009 at 02:40 PM

I don't think any of those lowlifes have ever known the joy of sitting down in the palms near the river bank with a cold beer in hand. Just being there is worth the risk. Baja is unique and that little river is one of a kind too. Good on ya for helping each other and fighting to stay, spend more precious time there.

We are lucky here too. We have a nice hardware store and when I can collar a new snowbird who buys or builds but leaves for the summer, I take him to the store, have them open an account, assign a qualified caretaker to sign in case storms or floods or earthquakes should call for emergency fixup materials. No charge for the open account and he can sleep better up north knowing he prepared a little. Worked well in John and Marty and probably others I didn't check on.

Sharksbaja - 6-16-2009 at 03:18 PM

Remember that guy named Bruce Leech? He was instrumental in expediting many things for Gringos and Mexicans alike. I miss his contributions and personal assistance very much. His forum personality wasn't necessarily representative of his "real-life".

JR was another one. Oh hell, so are so many in here . Don't always judge a poster by his cover.;)

So with this said I still see a need for full time monitor/mod. I know Doug can't physically nor I doubt he'd want to spend his life babysitting.
The quicker some of those trolls are nipped in the bud the better. It's interesting to note: Many past(or present) troublemakers are professionals in their daily "real" life. You must wonder if this is their demented way of relieving their angst. Well I guess that's better than them wandering the bars looking for a fight.

Keep a steady course mates. Our opinions should not polarize us, rather they should help us understand better another persons' view.

Cypress - 6-16-2009 at 03:42 PM
