BAJA TEQUILA DANCE PROJECT.at La Fonda Restaurant, La Mision/Ensenada

Gypsy Jan - 6-15-2009 at 12:47 PM

"Hi all, some friends are putting together a social event at La Fonda,

"...a project to bring the tourists back to Baja. About 40 others are also taking part in this project and working hard to make it take place. It will take place Sunday June 28th at La Fonda some time around 12:30 - 1:00

We would appreciate your being there to offer your support as this is for the good of Baja and Rosarito not just for LA Fonda."

I don't have a contact number or email for more info, but I will post it when available.

If there are more questions, please post here, I will try to answer you.

would saturday be better? that way people don't have to drive home NOB after partaking of all that tequila....

Good Question

Gypsy Jan - 6-15-2009 at 01:12 PM

I am not part of the organizing of the event and I will pass on contact info when I have it.

If you want to "dry out after", I'm sure that the organizers will have a plan for you. :tumble:

(P.S. That comment was meant in a positive way.)

tripledigitken - 6-15-2009 at 01:20 PM

I second the saturday suggestion. Those of us that work NOB m-f would be able to come without taking a day off. You would likely get more to attend. Sounds like fun!

just my 2 cents

The last time I ate there- there was a business meeting going on at the next table. Lots of Tequila flowing and the two seemed to be having a great meeting- then one fell off the chair onto the floor and stayed there. I guess they were done negotiating. La Fonda has great food- although their dollar-to-peso conversion skills were suspect.

Funny Story!

Gypsy Jan - 6-15-2009 at 02:16 PM

I haven't seen anyone falling face down on the floor at La Fonda, but I have heard some vague references, but no one will give me any details (perhaps they are personal reminiscences?)

bajabound2005 - 6-15-2009 at 02:23 PM

Uh....I believe this is supposed to be a "secret" for authenticity's sake.

This is from their website (like that makes sense...build a website and then add this):
"We need to keep the event more or less a secret from the general public prior to filming (so as not to spoil the surprise) so PLEASE only share this info with people you think would like to be a part of the project."

Bajahowodd - 6-15-2009 at 02:32 PM

Rats! I'm heading South that week, but plan to be at least 500 miles south of La Mision by Sunday. Oh, well.

Udo - 6-15-2009 at 04:36 PM

Jana and I will be there as long as it involves tequila!

bajabound2005 - 6-15-2009 at 06:26 PM

Udo, bring your video camera if you have one!

Sallysouth - 6-15-2009 at 08:22 PM

Thats plain Silly!!Put it on the website and say it is supposed to be a secret???And what does "for authenticities sake" mean here? I'd love to attend but sounds kinda snobby.Do they mean you need to be" Someone" with a big wallet?hmmmm....:?:

fishbuck - 6-15-2009 at 08:26 PM

Probably because they are filming it. I was in a restuarant in Mex once and they were filming a tv show.
But they don't want you watching or looking at the camera. They want you to act like an extra in the background.

bajabound2005 - 6-15-2009 at 09:12 PM

Oh, you can be in the restaurant as regular customer and be in the "film". Your surprise as to what happens is what needs to be authentic. So BE surprised if you go!

And I don't know how much tequila will be poured, but you'll "hear" a lot of it.

SteveD - 6-17-2009 at 02:50 PM

The food at La Fondas has been going down hill for the last year since Demitri left. Some friends had Sunday Brunch there last month and said it was so bad they won't ever go back. Perhaps the "secret" filming is on Sunday because they will be the only ones there!

bajabound2005 - 6-17-2009 at 02:57 PM

La Fonda is merely the location, not the focus of the event.

Woooosh - 6-17-2009 at 03:02 PM

Are they filming "Weeds?"

we had the same experience in feb. the waiters seemed peeed everytime we ordered another round from the lower tables.

to top it off i hurled literally as soon as we got to our room at the pyramid resort (which was awesome. the resort, not the hurl). $80 later and we'll never return.

try poco cielo next door. food is great, really nice servers and the owner is a sweety.

edit: don't order the stuffed calamari in su tinto..... :barf:

Seems counter-productive. I'm sure business in general is off at La Fonda. Why would the staff not try and encourage those who do come there to return? La Fonda was where we stayed when my daughter first learned to surf. Since then, she's done the mainland Mexico Coast, Australia, Costa Rica, as well as places like Quatro Casas and Abreojos. I'm hoping things haven't turned so sour at La Fonda that it will affect them in the long run.

k-rico - 6-17-2009 at 05:29 PM

Is La Fonda still mainly a gringo restaurant? I haven't been there in years. Maybe 10 or so.

DanO - 6-17-2009 at 06:19 PM

We stayed the night there on a Thursday in April, and the hotel was virtually empty. They closed the restaurant and bar at 8 pm, before we got there. The next morning at breakfast, which was decent (smaller portions than in the good ol' days, which is probably a good thing), we were the only people in the restaurant. Service was courteous and attentive, and they made sure there was wood on the fire to keep us warm (they even brought our bloody marys down to the lower patio which we went to check out after ordering from our table inside).

Tough times for the new owners after buying the place and putting a ton more money into it, and I would guess they're cutting corners wherever they can. If they can hang on until business comes back, I suspect the quality issues will be resolved.

I'd hate to see the place go under. It holds a lot of memories, for me and others. Like the time I was out in the lineup years ago and my friend Greg pointed up at one of the hotel rooms that has a shower with a full length window to the beach. A naked woman had stepped into it and was turning on the shower.

Greg: "Hey, check out the naked chick!"

Me: "Oh, great. That's my wife."

Greg: "Do you think she knows everybody can see her?"

Me: "She will as soon as she turns around to face the beach."

Funny thing was, she didn't, despite the fact that I was waving and yelling and all of the other guys in the lineup were whistling and falling off their boards laughing. I paddled in and got up to the room just as she was walking out of the shower.

Me: "You realize that everyone could see you from the water while you were in the shower?"

Wife: "WHAT?!?!?!? I thought it was like one-way glass or something!"

Anyway, she was very popular with the dinner crowd that night.

La Fonda

Gypsy Jan - 6-17-2009 at 07:03 PM

I am the OP (original poster) and I have no inside information or comment on the current state of affairs at the beloved, historic and beautiful (on beach location) restaurant and hotel.

I am hoping that they are getting their act together and will produce a great event for all the Baja/tequila enthusiasts who want to attend.

bajabound2005 - 6-17-2009 at 07:25 PM

Just for the record, La Fonda is NOT producing, managing, coordinating, supporting (financially) or otherwise involved in this "event". This is not about La Fonda. As I posted earlier, it's simply a location and the "event" is separate. This "event" could happen anywhere, including your local McDonald's. ('cept they may not take to the tequila part!).

Definitely worth being there on the appointed date at the appointed hour - if you want to be in on it...otherwise, you'll see it on utube.

We will do our darndest to make it there that day for this...but this is the day after our Punta Banda Yacht Club Commodore's Ball/Renaissance Faire. But - so many that are going to the Faire are also participating in this "event" and are headed to La Fonda right after the "faire". Somehow, I think we can get our butts out of the house by 10-11 the next morning to be part of....history(?)!!!!

And Gypsy Jan, hope to see you there!

Udo - 6-17-2009 at 08:54 PM

Bungalows 20 & 21 have the open bath view to the beach. AND those are the only rooms we ever book when we stay there.:O
One can close the curtains if one chooses to.

Yeah, I know. That's what I was yelling, but she couldn't hear me from that far away.

La Fonda Tequila Publicity Stunt

[Edited on 6-19-2009 by BajaGeoff]

The Baja Tequila Dance Project

AgentRoberto - 6-19-2009 at 04:25 PM

This is the organizer of the Baja Tequila Dance Project.

Let me clear up a few inaccuracies.

The Baja Tequila Dance Project is NOT a social event nor is it a tequila event, nor is it a La Fonda event. We are filming a publicity stunt that is intended to be on Youtube and will hopefully boost tourism for Baja California. The fact that we are filming it at La Fonda and on a Sunday is a purely about logistics of the project and has nothing to do with favoring one restaurant over another. Baja California has many wonderful hotels and restaurants, of which La Fonda is one. Our video is being made to benefit all of the businesses in Baja that depend on tourism.

Obviously it's not as "secret" as we originally intended, and that's okay. But the intent is to capture the surprise on people's faces when they see it. So if you show up, PLEASE whatever you do - don't be a spoiler and say, "Hey, where are they filming that tequila thing?"

We're still looking for a few dancers to be part of the project. It's not too late if you hurry. There's no pay and no one is making any money off this, but it's a lot of fun and a chance to be a part of a really cool experience.

The Official website is www.thebajatequila.com.

Thanks for your support.

bajabound2005 - 6-19-2009 at 04:59 PM

We'll be there with Udo and Jana as diners enjoying Baja!

fishbuck - 6-19-2009 at 06:15 PM

Is this going to be like one of those " Girls gone wild after drinking lots of free tequila" things.
I like the idea of "dancers" and free tequila. That's my kind of tourism!

bajabound2005 - 6-24-2009 at 10:56 PM

Time to bump this up. As a reminder to one and all, this has nothing to do with La Fonda....it's simply a location for an event...like "I'm getting married, you're invited, here's where the reception is"...you hate the restaurant but you love me (remember...I'm just telling a story).... so you go. You don't even have to eat the food. Order a club soda for God's sake! This will be a truly fun event with our friends, neighbors, fellow Nomads (notice that I capitalized Nomads) and friends we've yet to meet. So the plan is Sunday, June 28 sometime between 12:30 and 1:30....things will happen. You can be a part of the problem....or a part of the solution. (OK, that might be a stretch...)

Woooosh - 6-25-2009 at 08:45 AM

All this is for a You Tube promotional video for baja tourism? Any american 13 year old could have shot it with their cellphone camera and had it posted already. The best "viral' videos are underproduced.

Just a Reminder

Gypsy Jan - 6-27-2009 at 11:43 AM

The event is taking place tomorrow.

bajabound2005 - 6-27-2009 at 08:52 PM

and we'll be there with some nomads and not nomads but wanna be nomads! It's going to be FUN!!!! Woooosh, hope to see you there!

MikeLikeBaja - 6-27-2009 at 09:54 PM

Not to bumb you guys out. Wouldn't it be a good way for the narcos to make an impression as well?

BornFisher - 6-27-2009 at 09:59 PM

Looking forward to seeing the YouTube. I know a few folks doing this and they are very serious about it.
I like the idea, reminds me of the time about 200 people froze at Grand Central Station!!

You mean it's not July yet? Wooosh doesn't do tequila- I "won" a chugging contest freshman year in college and never touched the stuff again. Sadly- the same thing happened with me and Southern Comfort in high school.

I'm on pet rehab duty today- a friends lab puppy ate a rock and we brought her down to Baja for the surgery to save $2000 for them (was $800 here, $2800 stateside). She's all bones and very thin- but I think she will make it. She's not happy about the Gerber baby food puree I shoot down her throat with a horse syringe every few hours to get her system going again. My other labs are more than willing to try it... (as if the five labs I have isn't enough work).
