where would i find a baja filmmaker?

jungantur - 6-18-2009 at 12:40 PM

Buenas tardes, Nomads,

I'm hoping to locate a filmmaker in Baja who knows the lay of the land a little bit, to work together on a documentary-type project.

Craigslist is the sound of so many crickets chirping.

Anyone have a thought on where I might post in order to reach some likely candidates?

much appreciated,
Jeremy

Try to tract down Carlos Bolado he directed the excellent film
"Bajo California: El Limite Del Tiempo.

He should be able to recommend someone.

Perhaps you could be more specific:

There are film-makers who specialize in 4x4, surfing,POV, underwater, romance, drama, comedy, documentaries, indegenous peoples, horticulture, etc... Crews with equipment, without... writers, directors, camera-man, PD, best boy...

There are various formats, film, 16mm, 35mm, 70mm, video HD etc...

Perhaps by describing a bit more we could point you in the direction of previous works and their creators? and crews?

Is there a budget?

If you are looking for location info that's different than film-maker...

or u2u

You mean, that's all there is to it? Tell them I'm making a movie and I can have a machine gun? I knew there had to be a way.

These permits are provided by the Secretary of Defense in Mexico City and take a minimum of two months to obtain. Collaboration with a local production manager could be helpful to obtain that kind of permits.

I can put you in contact with a photographer who filmed over 300 general release Hollywood feature films. He lives near La Paz and is a documentary film maker in his own right, as is his wife. Send me a U2U if you want particulars and if there's some money in it for him.

Many thanks to all who posted suggestions. I will follow up with each one if I haven't already.

I should mention that I'm open to splitting the project up among filmmakers in different areas, in the event various people have a local interest but don't want to range too far.

@gnukid:

The project is a series of short place profile videos, starting with a dozen or so, covering Loreto and southward, and eventually covering the whole peninsula.

Totally agnostic on format. The shorts are to run much compressed on a website, so image quality's not at a premium, but sound quality's a slightly stickier wicket, as built-in mics are often no match for even a mild breeze. One- or two-person job. Lots of on-the-street interviews. Not a blockbuster budget, to be sure, but compensation will be fair.

Cool, Sounds like prosumer HD video cameras with lighting, external remote mics, tripods and talent will suffice and it will be something we would all enjoy.

Before you all soil your undies, you may wish to go to "redguide.com" so you will understand the nature and scope of this "project". It appears to be a wannabe real estate support project. ;D

jungantur - 6-22-2009 at 07:47 AM

Well, the hope is that when the film stuff is done, no one will think to slap derisory quotation marks around it.

I do join bajahowodd in taking a firm stand against soiled undies. Nothing elicits such sordid snickers/as someone aslosh in his filthy knickers.

Ken, is that movie going to be released in theaters or go straight to video stores? When will it be released, or has it?

They are looking for a distributor at the moment.

The people close to the project (Including Megan Edwards) aren't talking at all about anything. I think that is the most professional way to approach things, but its hard for me, since I want to see Coco strut his stuff on the big screen!:bounce::lol:

Baja Nomad 'el jefe' and esposa Paula produced a well done/ professional movie a few years ago, filmed in Carlsbad... (The Healer's Son... I think was the title) We went to a special showing at a local theater... but it never got circulated as far as I know.

It is a tough business... and needs lots of connections to get shown.
