Paying the Penalty for Slackers

MrBillM - 6-24-2009 at 09:47 AM

Crossing Northbound at Mexicali East, found a line that should have been about 10-15 minutes. 37 minutes later, I get to the Kiosk.
Talking with the agent, I asked how many people STILL didn't have the required ID. "About Half" was the answer. I asked if it was slowing things down a lot. He said "Sure. If they don't have the correct docs, we have to enter the information manually and advise them to get the necessary ID as soon as possible. IF everybody had the correct documents, the line would move twice as fast".

Before I puled away, I said "Do you make a point of taking your time to get that point across" ? "Nah" he said with a BIG Grin. "We wouldn't do something like that".

HALF?

That is crazy.

They should send everyone without a passport or border crossing card to secondary. Make them wait four hours and then have to recite the "Pledge of Alleigence". That will get their attention and they'll either get a passport or stop crossing the border.

So, who were all those people that were written about, swamping the passport offices?

True enough, but methinks the Border Patrol guy may have been exaggerating a tad.

Another thing that really slows things down are the inconsiderate people who chat with the border guards and ASK THEM questions.

Enquiring Minds

Yeah, I hate it when those inconsiderate Chatters are IN FRONT of ME.

It's OK if they're behind me, though.

I don't care when YOU get home.

The ammount of US citizens that cross on a daily basis the border without a passport or passport card is huge. The secondary inspection area would have to be a 4 level parking lot if what you suggest was to happen.
