Positive cross cultural mixing

shari - 6-28-2009 at 10:55 AM

I have been thinking of starting this new thread for awhile and with Canada Day coming up, it made me reflect on how I have canadianized some mexican traditions and mexicanized some canuck traditions.

Our family is a great result of cultural mixing and matching...which has created some unique ideas and characters. We have all been enriched by each others culture.

For example...gypsies brought me a big bag of Earl Grey Tea which is a canadian standby I had missed. So here I sit with my mexican version of this canadian tea...in the big san ignacio grocery store, I found a bottle of Cointreau for 70 pesos and tried a shot of it in my tea...and will wonders never cease....it is fantastic...a natural duo!!!

How about others share some examples of cross culture favorites....like peanut butter and banana burritos...etc...

flyfishinPam - 6-30-2009 at 04:04 PM

OK I got one and this is an American and Mexicano mix story-

One morning our daughter told us about a nightmare she had the night before. She says a monster was chasing her and she ran and ran then fell down but right before the monster got her, dad hacked it up with a machete.

I told her that I used to have the exact same kind of dreams and the monster would chase me down a hill through a forest and I would stay just ahead of it but then fall down and right before the monster got me my dad would come out of nowhere and shoot it with a rifle.

kind of funny those kinds of differences.

We go to Michoacan for tacos de carnitas, buy a half kilo to eat there, and bring any leftover meat home so I can make a Piggy Park Barbecue sandwich. People in SC like mustard bbq sauce, kind of sweet. We also like cole slaw on our bbq sandwiches...on a sesame seed bimbo bun. yummmmmmm

A few things missing

Heaping tablespoon of malt and a raw egg. Better if you use fresh squeezed OJ. Eliminate the water and use crushed ice.

Add Tequila and Damiana and it becomes a breakfast of champions. ;D

When you can't wait for dessert ...

OK try this, hand cranked fettuccine, parmesan cheese, vino blanco, a bit of real butter, a bit of garlic and fresh cleaned chocolate clams then with a bit of heavy creme making a light Fettuccine alfredo without the egg but with the clams. took me quite awhile to make that then the man and the boys eat it with freaking corn tortillas! yuk!

shari - 7-1-2009 at 06:29 PM

oh man that sounds so great...if it werent so hot there, i'd be over for dinner soon...but would have to bring flour tortillas for Juan...geezo

Paulina - 7-1-2009 at 08:42 PM

Shari,

Thank you for not making a meal of my burro. You're the best! Dern and I were just talking about you today, we may make a road trip again this summer to cool off from Bahia and talked about heading your direction. We will be burro-less.

One day when we're there full time that might not be the case. I'm still working on getting Dern on board with taking the horse on the big move...

The biggest issue will be the towing factor, the panga vs. the horse....my arguement is that when we're there 24/7 we'll build a garage so we won't have to tow the panga.

Problem solved.

Sorry for jumping aboard your hijack!

See you soon,
P<*)))>{

shari - 7-2-2009 at 08:04 AM

no problema...just go local and put the horse in the back of the pick up...get some stylin wood rails for it and off ya go.

Iflyfish - 7-2-2009 at 09:19 AM

Or how about putting the horse in front of your pick up and towing it eh?! I saw it done in Borat.
