Thanks David K and bajalou......what a great journey....did they visit Mission San Pedro Martir---looks like they followed the trails in that
area.....been so long since I read the book I can't remember.

Thank you Mexitron for getting me started on this.
They did go thru the MSPM. from there W then N to San Antonio, then SW to the coast. They took a trail from Valle Trinidad into the mountains thru
La Grulla then on to the mission. They mentioned that by the time of their visit to La Grulla, cattle had trampled and grazed all around the edges
of the ponds and valley bottom so no waterfowl was seen. (in 1893 mallards and cinnamon Teal were seen here in May)

"July 28 we left the Rancho Santo Tomas and descened th west slope of the mountains by a well worn trail. A few miles below the ranch we passed the
ruins of the old San Pedro Matir Mission on a sloping bench on the mountain side, where a small stream afforded water for irrigating some small
fields. All that remains now of the mission are the bases of adobe walls where buildings stood, a little graveyard near, and the low banks of
irrigation ditches."

Well, sounds like the trail was better......although I imagine the climate was a lot cooler, what with global warming.....
Seriously, though, I think the trail system was better back then from lack of roads, more cattle, and more mining.

From Nelson's account, it sounds like in this area at least the trails were pretty visible. He also talks of a trail for sheep from Santa Rosa meadow
east and down Santa Rosa Canyon. (now known as Canon Cajon). This is about the point he turned west and went down to the mission site. To me it's
amazing how he could find his way around the penninsula with no guides. In plotting his map with some of my waypoints in Valle San Felipe, he is
right on in some spots and close in most. (of course I don't know the datum for his map nor what UTM Ellipsoid he used so that might have thrown me
off) His finding some of the other places just amazes me. What a explorer.
