Hi Bill: Wonder if you would know if I would be able to receive DTV (101) that I sub in Rosarito, when I arrive in Mulege, July. I have a 18"dish and DTV LNB???

There are a number of others here that would have a better idea of DirecTV (Sat 101w) reception as far south as Mulege. My firsthand experience with Direc extends little farther south than Percebu.

Speaking only for what I've read and heard, the standard 18" dish is marginal at that latitude. BCS Tech and Los Frailes probably have better information.

Although the Nationwide feeds (conus) are not a problem, there may be a problem if you are receiving San Diego Network stations with those being outside the focus area. The San Diego feeds on Dish are on a Spotbeam transponder which is really marginal south of San Felipe. Sometimes there, sometimes not. No idea about Direc.

I was gonna crack wise about an 18" dish in Mulege, but restrained myself.

You will not be able to get much of anything, equals nada, with that dish this far south. It will take at least a 1.2 meter dish.

You will also really be disappointed in what you get with DTV this far south.

Thank's for all the replies, you have enlightened me as I only have knowledge with FTA Dish and thats down, for awhile. Have 22 friends waiting for me to get N3 broken, thats why I'm leaving Rosarito, just to get away.

I'm curious, you imply that you cannot get all the DTV channels even with a larger dish the farther south you go, is that correct? I know the locals would be a problem since they are spot beamed but I was'nt aware that conus feeds would fade out also.
Here in BoLA we get all the channels on DTV including San Diego and Los Angeles locals. A 24" dish works pretty well but a 30" is better.

Dish Size

MrBillM - 6-30-2009 at 11:12 AM

I wondered about the 1.2 M Dish recommendation for Mulege since subscribers all the way down to Cabo are using that size which would indicate a smaller dish would perform in Mulege.

Checking out what footprint maps are available, the one on DirecTV (101 w) indicates a smaller dish would be satisfactory.

Of course, you can never go wrong having a LARGER reflector than necessary as opposed to having one too small. That may have something to do with the recommendation.

The map does indicate what I had said I'd heard. That 18" was marginal. However, it also indicates that 24" (60 cm) would be satisfactory.

Thats a wonderful footprint map, showing an 18" dish being adequate in much of Baja, only that it were factual.

I am located 10 miles south of Santa Rosalia, 30 miles north of Mulege.

Years ago I could get adequate (?) DTV signal here with a 1 meter dish, however after Black Friday or Sunday or whenever, I found that a subscription gave me very little, even on a 1.2 meter dish.

Nonetheless, it has only been my personal experience and the commentary of many others in this area that DTV is just not delivering what is paid for.
Not my personal experience because, I MIGHT have been using FTA very successfully until just recently. Emphasis on MIGHT.

Black Sunday, that brings back memories. I lost 5 cards that day within about 30 minutes. As fast as I put in another card they would zap it. I had a sixth but resisted the temptation. That was a long month waiting for someone to figure out how to get around the problem.

I think that's an old footprint map For DirecTV 8, and was probably drawn up by a marketing department. Here's a footprint map for DirecTV 9S:

DTV does NOT work in mulege; been there, done that....starchoice is the only way to go

Floatflyer - 7-4-2009 at 09:03 PM

While Starchoice is ONE way to go, most USA receivers in southern Baja are DISH, but with up to a 2 meter dish.

I also have Starchoice with a small dish in the La Ribera area.
