June 21, 2009 - Drove Guerrero Negro to Loreto – 265 Miles, 5 hours driving time. We were required to pay 10 pesos when passing through Guerrero Negro to have the car sprayed. This is where we entered Baja California Sur. There was a long straight stretch with nothing but flat lands and sage brush. At KM 40 passed Volcano, 6200 feet elevation per our GPS. At KM 17 hit steep down grade, elevation 1560. Great views for the passenger, but not for the driver. Town of Santa Rosalia was really interesting with old railroad. Stayed the night at the Hotel Oasis in Loreto, located on the Sea of Cortez. Basic Hotel. Ended up being invited to join two brothers from the U.S. on their hired fishing boat. All we had to pay for was the gear. A dolphin jumped above the boat at the bow and almost landed in our boat. Our captain had never seen anything like it before. Saw sailfish and my husband caught a dorado, but released it. Other fish were caught and released. We enjoyed our fishing trip and headed to La Paz.

Note - Driving Speed on straight stretches was whatever the speed limit sign said, but in miles per hour instead of kilometers per hour. Please do not lecture, I was not the driver. Driving times and distances are based on our GPS and do not include times when we were stopped for gas, food or Geocaching. If you don't know what this is, check out www.geocaching.com It is basically a high tech treasure hunt using your GPS. Brings you to great places you would never find otherwise and makes for a fun, but longer, roadtrip.

The volcano is LAS TRES VIRGENES, with an eruption recorded by the Jesuits in 1746 making it the most recent active volcano on the peninsula.
