Baja or Northern Colombia?

Ken Cooke - 7-8-2009 at 03:43 PM

If I were to purchase a property in Colombia, $10,000.00 would buy me a small casita south of Barranquilla in one of the poorer barrios, but free and clear. A trip to the ocean can be made in 25 minutes, lots to do, and you have an adventure base camp of sorts.

Baja, $10,000 would perhaps buy land and little else. A trailer would need to be purchased and hauled to the land. $5000 or so per year for the land? I could visit once a month or so. Colombia costs $450 for the r/t flights from LAX. So, Colombia is farther (3000 mi. farther), but the prices favor Colombia over Baja.

Any comments?

Parque Tayron - a mere 2 hr. drive

Punta San Francisquito - The Baja Vibe!

Yeah......What's your question?

One costs way more, one costs way less...

Ken Cooke - 7-8-2009 at 04:11 PM

People are building in Panama, driving up the prices. Baja is sky-high. Just looking at other alternatives, that's all.

So, why are you coming to a Baja site promoting Colombia?
Makes no Baja sense to me.

Same reason I posted questions about Venezuela. Mayby people who post here know the answers to Ken's questions.
I got alot of friendly help with that thread.

One is cheaper, because it is in another hemisphere... far away, and not too easy to drive to.

Baja pictures will be posted upon next visit to Baja. Hopefully, soon. The Jeep has been garaged all summer, and the last bunch of parts have arrived for installing. I'm dying for Los Arcos and Mariscos El Guerrero down in Tijuana!

Hook - 7-8-2009 at 05:46 PM

How much to get the Jeep down there?

The Jeeping is better in Colombia?

Lifestyles should not be measured purely on how CHEAP they are...................

noproblemo2 - 7-8-2009 at 06:00 PM

It's a no-brainer if you are posting here......

SKIDS - 7-8-2009 at 06:33 PM

Ken,
Looks awesome. I'd rent or lease. Spend 4-months in Baja , 4-months in Columbia and 4-months in the USA.
AND WHAT GORGEOUS WOMEN !

Drive to La Paz, ferry to Mazatlan. Drive to Panama, ferry to Cartagena (no roads cross Panamanian/Colombian border jungle). 2 hrs. to Barranquilla. In Venezuela, there is that massive 3,000 ft. waterfall (Angel Falls) that I read about recently that takes a real 4WD to encounter. The Amazonian highlands of Peru would be incredible to revisit. So would Juaraz, Peru for the camping. Machu Pichu would be great as well. Andrew Bourdain is going to coastal Chile in his TV show, and Argentina has beautiful countryside. Talk about adventure.

Angel Falls

Ken If you took that route you would never get past La Paz, we definitely have the most beautiful women right here.

comitan - 7-8-2009 at 06:55 PM

Now your making foolish statements.

I'm talking 4WD adventure, sight-seeing, and practicing both Spanish and Portuguese - a language I have yet to study. I've got the woman-dept. all taken care of, muchas gracias.

I know that in some areas of Central America, you better be on your land most of the time, or have a caretaker, or squatters will come and take over. And it's not just about price. What will you do all day? Building and fixing and decorating will be done at some point, and really, how many hours a day can you sit and stare at the water? Nearby recreation and intellectual pursuits (and their cost) need be considered. If you don't really need a home base and want to explore, as suggested in Ken's post, then just rent for extended periods of time and move on. You can get a decent hotel in Costa Rica for $20/nt. For $35 you can get a kitchen; for $60 you can get 3 meals/day.

Ken, if I could live anywhere I want, it would definantly be Colombia.

Except Parque Tayron; private homes are not permitted there. :(

How about spending a little more and getting a place on or closer to the beach in Columbia? How is the fishing in Columbia?

The markets and restaurants are all stocked each day with fresh fish. You could live closer to the beach, but then you are outside of the population centers which could present problems...depending on any security situations happening at that particular moment.

As far as finding caretakers, that's the easy part. $320K (negotiable) buys this sweet deal of an estate on the coast.

Puerto Colombia is just outside of Barranquilla, but places like that get boring since you are stuck in the boonies, having to drive everywhere. Its all about location (and expenses) in my opinion.

Pretty cool beaches though...
