Illegal immigrants detained after arriving by boat

The U.S. Border Patrol says it has detained 20 illegal immigrants who were brought ashore on a Carlsbad beach after traveling from Mexico by boat.
The agency says agents detained 15 men and five women, all Mexican nationals, around 5 a.m. Friday after a Border Patrol agent spotted them coming
ashore at South Ponto Beach in a 30-foot boat.
Authorities say the group detained included a man who may have been involved in the smuggling operation.
The Border Patrol and U.S. Coast Guard chased the smugglers' boat until it escaped into Mexican waters.
U.S. authorities report a growing number of attempts to smuggle people and drugs across the border from Tijuana, Mexico, to San Diego on rickety
boats.
