Wall bed for La Paz house

Lulu - 7-18-2009 at 08:56 PM

Can anyone tell me if they know where to buy a wall bed locally -- perhaps in La Paz, Cabo or even Guadalajara? I contacted someone in Puerto Vallarta, but he is now retired and doesn't sell or make them anymore.
Thanks so much!

thanks so much Kate! I'll check it out! I half expected that it would be a relatively easy item to have made/installed and am surprised I have to hunt like this. May be an opportunity for a niche business! :-)

Are you talking about a Murphy bed? Look in furniture stores. Some of the ones here in San Jose have those.

Yes I am -- but I believe the Murphy bed you can see the frame when it is upright, but the "wall" bed sits on a platform that swings upright. I have been googling Los Cabos, Cabo San Jose, Cabo San Lucas, La Paz, and Guadalajara -- and have only come up with a murphybed manufacturer/distributor or perhaps just a retail store in Puerto Vallarta.
If you know the names of the stores down your way, could you please share them with me? There are so many vacation rentals that advertize murphy beds -- they must have gotten them somewhere!

You can give Claudia or Tania at El Callejon furniture in Cabo San Lucas a call: 624/143-1139. Both speak excellent English. They know everything about furniture in Mexico. We had them make some custom furniture and it turned out beautiful. I think what you are after is a Murphy bed built into a free standing cabinet.

I've made a note of their names and number. Thanks so much!

Google "murphy bed." The vast majority of murphy beds do not show the bedframe.

actually, that's what i did and that's how i came up with wall bed -- i'd never called it that before! always a murphy bed!
but interestingly, while many vacation rentals seem to have one i could only come up with a store in puerto vallarta -- there must be more in baja california or in guadalajara, but i've come up cold!
i appreciate all your input. thanks again!

Welcome, Lulu!

I googled Murphy Beds and the first entry shows a do-it-yourself option. You can buy the metal mechanism for $299.00. Have it shipped to a U.S. address and either go get it or have someone bring it down. Then have a furniture or cabinet maker make the bed to your specifications. You can also download lots of pictures and specifications.

Of course, this is an option in case you can't find what you want in Baja. I noticed that the finished Murphy Beds are quite expensive in the U.S.

Let us know what you finally do. Other Nomads may want to consider wall beds too. Good Luck!

With lots of pictures, someone local could probably also make the metal mechanism if you do not have a way to get it from the states.

Will be curious to see what you end up with.

The name of the store here is Dico Muebles. Maybe there is one in La Paz. I didnt have time to see if they still had them.
