Baja Horses

Not all horses in Baja are "rangey nags".

Taken last year at Valle las Palmas (Baja Norte, sw of Tecate)

Great picture!

gorgeous photo Ken, one of those looks almost like a draft!

Heres a pic of our 2 Canuck transplants in the the Sierra San Pedro Martir. Ones a Hanoverian mare and the other a nice paint gelding. Both are very well schooled riding horses.

The saddles made for desert travel are like humvees. They have a heavy leather "ferring" over the horse's chest and extending over the cowboy's legs. Most Impressive!

Has anyone a photo of this?

BajaNuts - 8-15-2009 at 10:29 PM

here's a few I found on Flikr-
There's about 6-7 horse pics and then it goes to other stuff. I didn't scroll through all the pics.

Here is a beautiful paint, left tethered to a tree while its vaquero was off somewheres, over Easter. With my skills, the picture may not appear.

Dang nammit, I knew it. I will try again later....

Mulegena, There's a neat one at the Equapales(spelling?) restaraunt in Mulege, not fancy, but well built.:D

I would be most interested to know the details of transplanting a horse to Baja. I've exhausted many searches trying to learn how to make this happen.

Do have the option of taking them back Stateside again?

I don't want to leave ours behind when we transplant ourselves in 5 more years, so please give me the details on how you attained their "passports" so to speak.

I can't wait for the first time I ride our Buckskin Dun "Handyman" into town on a beer run.

I am amazed at the beautiful horses we've seen lately. Most impressive are the young men who can ride these horses like cowboys, yet look like ballerinas, with their feet hooked into only one strap tied around their horses whithers.

This past month I wished I had my camera handy as we passed by a desert cowboy fully decked out with his chaps, vest, hat, saddle packs, etc. everything a vaquero needs....as he studied his cellphone - text messaging as his horse trotted along the side of the road. The best of the old world and new.

Thanks in advance for any horse import info you can share,
P. <*)))>{

Paulina - 8-16-2009 at 08:18 PM

Oggie,

This past summer we talked about the San Borja festival so often. I would love to be able to attend one of these years.

I believe it is held every year on the 8th thru 12th of October. The fruit on the two hundred year old Mango tree, seems to be better and more plentiful on even numbered years. It is alot of fun. Mucho dancing, good food, a Cabelagata. and rodeo.

Paulina:

Re- getting your horses down to Baja

The process we had to go through was not too bad paperwork wise.

1st we needed a current Coggins (within 30 days) as well as an international health certificate (your vet can get you one easily enough).
We then needed a broker (I can dig out the name of ours if you like) in the Otay Mesa area theres lots! It took one day for the broker to line up the paperwork, they warned us that once at the border we could have to take the horses to the TJ racetrack to get a second inspection done by a state vet but since ours were pleasure horses that did'nt happen. The broker cost us $500. Not sure about bringing them back you would have to talk to someone at US customs but I imagine its about the same!
U2U me you have more questions

shari - 8-17-2009 at 05:50 PM

Paulina...you should try to participate in a cabelgata some year...just awesome...even if you had to borrow a horse, it's such a great experience. i love to see the families ride together.

Paulina - 8-17-2009 at 07:43 PM

Thank you Astrobaja, I've put the info you provided in my baja file for future reference.

Shari, I would LOVE to participate if Americanos are welcome to take part in that tradition.

Dern and I are liking Asuncion more and more as we see/hear/learn about the old school baja traditions that are still alive and kicking within the community. We are seeing less and less in "other places" that we frequent.

Mulege has many fine horses.

Pompano - 8-18-2009 at 08:23 PM

A couple riding along the Mulege river trail. Can anyone identify the guy without a shirt? A cold Pacifico to the winner.

Paulina - 8-18-2009 at 08:48 PM

I'm guessing Tarzan.
