Gypsy Jan - 8-3-2009 at 11:35 AM

Here in Rosarito adjacent.

I get automatic earthquake updates from the USGS and they have not posted anything yet.

Geez, you heart must have been pounding if you were rocking and rolling on the sway seventeen floors up! :o

wilderone - 8-3-2009 at 11:40 AM

I thought it was a dizziness symptom of stress!!! It's on this website:
3 of them within 5 minutes, 5.0, 5.8, 6.9 - yeah - right off BOLA - shoulda rocked and rolled those islands - maybe they're a few feet higher now, with more beach !!

toneart - 8-3-2009 at 11:41 AM

This just came on as breaking news on network news programs. Supposedly a 6.9. That is huge!

I sincerely hope nobody was injured. We are standing by for reports.

DENNIS - 8-3-2009 at 11:42 AM

I felt nothing.

Bajahowodd - 8-3-2009 at 11:55 AM

I don't profess to be an expert in such matters, but it obvious from the diagram that we're looking at the same plate boundaries that include the San Andreas. And lately, there's been much discussion about certain precursor events, especially in the area of the Ft. Tejon quake.

BajaBella - 8-3-2009 at 11:58 AM

So glad to read of others feeling it! (this reminds me of a Dane Cook comedy schpiel...) but "I was on the phone, sitting on the couch, talking to a daughter in WA when the couch and my house began moving side to side." My first thought was a quake - but it was coupled with - damn, just my luck - am I having a mini stroke or something?!? Phew! :wow:

SharonT - 8-3-2009 at 11:59 AM

How are things in Mulege? Any damage

DanO - 8-3-2009 at 12:01 PM

MrBillM - 8-3-2009 at 12:39 PM

The News marooon is talking to some resident of BOLA (Paula Schreiner) on the phone right now and she said they felt some pretty good bumps and she's heard of things falling off of shelves, but that's about it.

These News Idiots, living in NY and DC, know absolutely nothing about Baja and sound like Boobs on this story. One of the dumber things said was "We heard that there was one small Island offshore that disappeared into the ocean. Have you heard anything about that" ? When Paula said No, he said "Well, maybe that was over on the Pacific side".

El Camote - 8-3-2009 at 12:56 PM

That ain't just SOME resident of BOLA! :o:o

That's pretty close to the epicenter. That's good if that is all she felt.
I saw a report on another website that warned of Tsunami warning.
It is a bit alarming that we haven't had anybody reporting from mid or So. Baja, unless communications are down.

oldlady - 8-3-2009 at 01:04 PM

Didn't feel a thing down here in La Paz, wouldn't expect to....and communications seem just fine, toneart. Looking for post from our friends in the mid-section too.

Just got an Em saying the news was talking to Paulina down there. She is there now. Wonder if we have the same person.

oldlady - 8-3-2009 at 01:08 PM

Yes, I pretty sure that's the case.

Hook - 8-3-2009 at 01:32 PM

Where is Santa Isabel they are referring to? Never heard of it.

Felt nothing over here in San Carlos.

Bajahowodd - 8-3-2009 at 01:36 PM

A star is born.

larryC - 8-3-2009 at 01:40 PM

Just got an e-mail from Sandford and Izzy who live at Rincon in the south bay, they said they don't know of any damage but it was a really good shaker and their house seemed to move 2 feet side to side. They can see my house accross the bay and it is still a 2 story so that's good news.
Larry
PS pretty sure that was Paulina on the news
PPS I have lived in BoLA for 11 years and traveled around there extensively and I have no idea what or where Santa Isabel is. Must just be a rancho or something.

Paulina - 8-3-2009 at 02:13 PM

That was me, after talking on the news I am applying for novela status down here. Dern and I were hanging out at Casa Diaz when Fox news called. Chubasco handed me the phone saying that they wanted to talk to an americano.

Earlier in the morning we were hanging out at our place when the quakes started to hit. They didnīt feel like all that, maybe a 3 or 4. Our place rocked pretty good, it moved our truck, but it wasnīt a biggie. Fom what we gather it was centered right off la guarda island, 6-9 ish on the Rictor scale.

The Delgado came on the radio to inform the town of the shaker and to caution people from being on the coast.

We talked to Ruthie out at Rincon as it was going on. We could hear the quakes coming as we spoke, but they werenīt enough to cause great alarm. Larry, your place is fine as well as all the other places on that strip.

We drove into town for an ice run as the dorado are in and that is when Fox news found us at Casa Diaz. They called Chubasco, he handed the phone to me. From that point on it was live talk from the store back and forth. i didnīt have death and distruction to report so the interview was short. (itīs been a wierd trip, more of that to come when i find a decent internet provider)

my theory is that because we are on the epicenter, the quake wasnīt so severe, kind of like the wake off of a boat. it must have got stonger as it headed n other directions.

As I told the reporter on the phone, life is good in Bahia de los angeles.
Itīs hot here. Fishing is good. I will be signing autographs in punta banda on aug. 11th.

P< )))<

ps- i canīt get used to the baja keyboard. arg.....

Bill, maybe the sinking island should be called Atlantis!!

The news boobs back East just put out this: " The statement further read, "Based on the earthquake magnitude and historic tsunami records, a damaging tsunami IS NOT expected along the California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, and Alaska coasts. At coastal locations which have experienced strong ground shaking, local tsunamis are possible due to underwater landslides"

We can all breathe a sigh of relief now and go back to our cold cervezas!!!

toneart - 8-3-2009 at 02:18 PM

Russ,

You didn't feel it in Pto. Chivato?

Paulina,

Thanks for your report. Glad all is well there.

SharonT - 8-3-2009 at 02:19 PM

My husband just spoke to Leon in the Oasis Park in Mulege. All is well, no earthquake shaking to be felt!

Paulina - 8-3-2009 at 02:22 PM

As i was talking on the phone to fox news, one local did come in to buy supplies. he heard the report come over the radio from the delgato and was on his way to agua amarga to be ahead of the sunami. He was going to miss out on the batch of cevcechi that was being prepared at the same time as we watched him drive off to higher ground-

Hook - 8-3-2009 at 02:23 PM

Trying to figure out how fast a tsunami travels. We were putting our boat in a slip at almost exactly the same time it occurred.

I see it was 6.2 miles below the surface but one must know the depth of the water to figure the speed of a potential tsunami. I found an equation that says a quake in 20,000 feet of water can travel 550 mph!!! This could have been in about 1/4 of that depth so IF it is proportionally reduced, any tsunami should have hit us.

Just got back from the harbor. My boat is still floating and the docks are still there. :smug:

Hook,

It is the town at the west access to San Borja from Mex 1, between BOLA turnoff and Jesus Maria.

Speaking of Mission San Borja, I hope it didn't sustain any damage!:(

shari - 8-3-2009 at 02:25 PM

Whoa!! geez...go away from the computer for a few hours and look what happens! I'm glad everyone is OK....gives me the willies remembering our quakes here. Please be careful..more could come...get your emergency bags ready just in case and get out of houses that have cement roofs.
Nice to hear from you Star!

larryC - 8-3-2009 at 02:25 PM

Paulina- Thanks for the update, the place I am most curious about is the old rock building behind Anne and Elwyns place. The east wall has moved about 6" and that was before I left in July, it didn't look like it would take very much to knock it down.

Russ- I see Santa Isabel on your map but trust me there is not much there, that is in the El Arco area (but appears to be a little north) and other than a few scattered ranchos there is nothing there.

Anyone at Gecko?

Not worried about our rig per se, but am a little anxious about the concrete pillars that support our giant palapa.

Would appreciate any eyeballing that anyone can do - no rush.

Sounds like Bahia escaped mostly unscathed - congratulations!

Larry, we will check it again when we get back out to camp. btw, donny lost his garage, cars, and his dog tequila to a fire last week. its been a heck of a summer down here. his house was saved due to the winds blowing to the south.

I just received an email from my friend Lane McDonald at the Vermillion Sea Field Station in BOLA, and he said everything was ok. He was curious as to how I knew about the earthquake so quickly. It is a small world.

larryC - 8-3-2009 at 02:41 PM

Paulina
I doubt that it fell down, but just curious if it moved any more. When we left in July the gap at the top of the wall was about 6". I'm talking about the wall that is closest to their house and looking at it from Phyllis's house side. They're on a trip in Alaska right now so not sure if they have even heard about the quake. Save an autograph for me and Lois.

ground motion is sometimes quite variable and depends on the geology beneath your location. seismic wave travel depends on grain size of sediments, rock type, geometry of geologic units, distance, and a number of other factors. basicly, waves travel differently in rocks, fine grain sediment, coarse grain sediment, etc. so you may experience seemingly low acceleration/motion in one location, and things may be more severe a few miles away.

btw, all other things being equal, "motion," as you refer to it, increases as you move toward epicenter.

Keri - 8-3-2009 at 03:09 PM

Funny, Fox 11 news called our Stateside office and wanted to know if our resort was still standing. The owners called here panicked. Just shows how out of touch the news media is. And yes we are still standing ,I didn't feel a thing,k

larryC - 8-3-2009 at 03:18 PM

I think your are referring to Rosarito, that is where you turn off to San Borja from Mex 1.
I found a "santa Isabel" on a topo map I have here and it is at 28-18N and 113-25W.
No idea why they would use that as a referrence point.:D

USGS produces automated EQ reports that provide magnitude/tme of event and distance to nearby towns. It's all about what is in database in the 'puter. News reports just repeat what is in automated EQ report from a 'puter. If you don't like the report, don't blame media, blame the government??

No Tsunami in Washington State ?

MrBillM - 8-3-2009 at 06:16 PM

Boy, that's a relief.

I have a sister who lives next to the water up there.

But, since that water is a river at the Eastern end, there probably wasn't a danger, anyway. And, there isn't a Harbor, hence no Harbor Waves.

While I'm certainly no expert on Tidal Waves, what I've read makes it seem unlikely that one "could" be generated in such a shallow body of water. At least, one that was noticeable, since the real thing is dependent on the vertical displacement of a large volume of water.

Whatever the reason for all the shakin', I know Shari & Juan sure rock!!

shari - 8-5-2009 at 06:53 AM

there was another small quake last evening...juan called me from the beach house to ask me if I felt it...nothing out here on the rocks!!

I dont know if I mentioned before that when things were really rockin out here, a "vidente" or "seer" came out to our house and suggested we move because he "saw" a catastrophe coming and we would be in danger...hmmm....he explained that the whole area from just north of GN to San Ignacio was very weak and had too much salt water seeping in underneath in all the little fault cracks and that soon a big earthquake would break it apart and Baja Sur would become an island...hmmm...cause for reflection for sure...but hey....ya pays yer money and takes yer chances...right? We did put off building for a year but when things quiet down everyone forgets about it and goes ahead with their lives and plans.

But I DO think about this from time to time...anything is possible...but I might get hit by a bus too....whatever....the trick is to live every day fully...happily with your heart full of love and joy.
