New Road to Puerto Penasco

I am heading to the Copper Canyon in October and this road looks like a great shortcut to the mainland from Baja, but recently read that robberies are taking place on this road and that the Miltary and Federal Police are not patroling this road, Can anyone give me an update on conditions?

Over in Sonora, there have been reports of masked bandits stopping cars and robbing people on the lonely stretch of road between the Baja California border, El Golfo de Santa Clara and Puerto Penasco. Requests are being made to Mexico City to send federal police and military personnel to patrol this 133 km stretch. (Note: this is a very isolated stretch of road across the Biosphere Reserve lands, not the main road to Puerto Penasco. By comparison, the San Felipe-Mexicali highway is more like a freeway and is patrolled by both the military, the federal police and the Green Angels. You are never out of sight of another vehicle. I would be more concerned about changing a flat tire in the desert heat.)

Personally I would not hesitate to travel that road, tho I have not yet done it. I would travel during the daylight, as is true on all of the isolated roads in Mexico, and yes, if you can have a buddy vehicle, or two, that would be ever better.

Banditos are highly over-rated--------just use your common sense and stay wide awake, like hopefully you would anywhere, and be observant of your surroundings.

I admit that not being able to carry a weapon in Mexico makes it more problamatic---------------

That's my take.
