I have been told the exchange rate is better in San Ysidro then to do it over the border. Any suggestions where to get best rate??

1. Costco in San Ysidro will exchange money; need not be a club member.
2. Any Mexican bank, inside with your passport or in their ATM machine for a nominal fee.Udo - 8-6-2009 at 01:41 PM
Believe it or not...
The best exchange rate I have seen between the US and Baja has been the cambio house at the Shell gas station just before you get into Otay (on hwy
905, the right side). They are about .75-2 pesos more per $ than the exchange houses or banks in Baja.
Try it!

i dont think our mexican banks in vizcaino change $ for pesos anymore...you have to deposit them then draw out pesos on your account.Udo - 8-6-2009 at 04:51 PM
You are correct Shari.
I have been to a half-dozen mexican banks in Northern Baja, and with exception of the Bancomer in Rosarito (six weeks ago), they all refused to
exchange dollars for pesos unless I either had and account or opened one.
The only alternative appears to be the exchange houses, and they are usually about 3/4 to 1+ peso lower than the national closing exchange rate.
But that is still 2+ pesos better than most businesses allow you all over Baja, with the exception of the La Fonda hotel which is 3-4
pesos lower yet.comitan - 8-6-2009 at 04:54 PM

What banks are there in Viscaino?Woooosh - 8-6-2009 at 08:52 PM
Using your ATM card at a Mexican bank who has partnered with a US bank will dispense pesos cheaply and at a good rate too (eg. Bank of America and
Santanders).Mulegena - 8-6-2009 at 09:02 PM

Golden 1 Credit Union does NOT work with Bancomer, I believe.

HSBC will not take and/or exchange dollars whether you have an account or not. It is for this very reason that they no longer have us as customers.bajalou - 8-7-2009 at 08:07 AM

If you have an HSBC account here in the US, will it let you withdraw pesos from HSBC ATMs in MX for free?Hook - 8-7-2009 at 10:53 AM
Happy to report, there is still no feew showing up in our B of A/Santander ATM transactions, contrary to current suspicions.LisaR. - 8-7-2009 at 11:20 AM
