Few Flowers from our Baja yard

DianaT - 8-10-2009 at 01:30 PM

This rose bush has grown only a tiny bit---harsh conditions for roses. But this rose grew from a sucker stem while we were gone. We really like it, but to us, it looks more like a camelia than a rose.

One marigold

This year our giant sunflowers did not grow as big, but they are still fun.

Just for fun---special effects with a sunflower

Looks like a rose named "Scentimental" that I have in my California yard. We have made potpourri with it and even used it with a rose petal based spice rub on some rotisserie pork.

Quote:
Scentimental™ made history in 1997 by becoming the first striped rose to win the AARS, and it's been delighting gardeners and cut-flower lovers ever since! A superb "first" rose to grow, it also appeals to seasoned Rosarians with its snowflake-like petals of pure white streaked and stroked in burgundy red. Some consider it romantic, while others believe that its stripes lend it a playful, even whimsical air. However you choose to present it, this highly disease-resistant, heat- and humidity-tolerant variety is a frequent rebloomer, so healthy that it even withstands urban pollution effortlessly. Each bloom is an individual masterpiece with a strong spicy scent and fade-proof rich color!

THANKS for the information. When we bought this at a local nursery, there were no blooms on it, but we were told it was multi-colored and beautiful----sure hope we can keep the bush growing and get more blooms.

Roses grow like crazy right in town, but we get all the salty wind, so it is a struggle.

Thanks! Getting a real macro lens is next on my wish list right along side of a real wide angle lens.

Right now I am taking the flower shots with my 70-200 lens with one extension tube---fun---but I do want a real macro---think I need to go back to work to fulfill my wish list.:yes:

Diane,

Not sure what make camera you have but I have a Canon 10D. I bought it with a 28-80 zoom. Zooms are always a compromise performance wise, but they are handy and not too pricey!
If you want a specialized macro, price wise they are not too bad especially if you could find one used on Ebay or Adorama.

My wish list is priced way out of my league at the present (how come I always like the most expensive stuff?)
I'd really like a fast wide angle like the Canon EF-16-35mm F2.8 $1600!!!
And a nice fixed telephoto for some tripod work to get far off raptors and Condors! Canon EF 400mm f2.8 a bargain at $8000!!!

sigh..... for half the money I can buy a refractor telescope thats way better optically than any Canon lens, they really are way overpriced!
