FM3 renewals in San Diego now!

My wife and I just picked up our FM3's is San Diego and were told by the lady that issued them that as of July 1 this year they are now able to renew the FM3 and FM2 in San Diego. It will be a year before we can test it but that is really good news to me.

Where did you get them? What lady?

I use to get mine in San Diego at the Consulate which was snap and complete in 24 hours. You may have to do it over again as I had to because "registering" is necessary in the closest town with an Immagration office to your home, in my case it was San Felipe.

No kidding, unless they have changed the rules dramatically for FM3's there are many Nomads here that got them for years at a Consulate but had to start all over with many more forms at their local Immagration office.

Love to hear that is not so difficult any longer for us part timers...

That would be good news. When we got our first one in San Diego, we were told that we could come back every year and get a new one if we wanted, but if we wanted to renew, we needed to do it here in Mexico.

We just got ours renewed, but I hope someone else tries it soon

You might of opened a whole new can of worms with questions that you might not be able to answer.

Can we renew our FM3s in SD even though we got the original one and renewals in Loreto?

If in fact we can get our renewals in SD, do we still have to go the the FM3 office in Loreto?

I absolutely will not be able to answer all or probably any of the questions. I am just repeating what I was told by the lady in the Mexican consulate in San Diego, don't know her name but she has short dark hair and has been doing the FM3's for a long time. I went in this morning to pick mine up and she volunteered the info. She said it was a new poplicy that was approved July 1 of this year, and the renewal will only cost $98, since you will already have the visa in your passport. I asked what paper work would be required for a renewal and she said it is the same as for the original. I had to show rental agreement, marriage certificate, and bank statement. Sounds too goods to be true, so it probably is, but she speaks perfect english so there was no way there was a misunderstanding. Hope its true.

Yes I know her, she has been very helpful in the past years. If a piece of paper was not attached giving you instructions to "register" in your area of Baja then yes maybe the FM3 doesn't have to be completed in Baja any longer which is really good news.

larryC, you need to have your FM3 stamped at the border within a certain amount of time, I think one month from issuance. Did she happen to tell you that?

It would be too good to be true that this could happen and the higher than mighty thinking knuckleheads in the Loreto office will say, " Oh, I have seen that you got this done in San Diego, good for you and you never need to deal with us again". "Oh, by the way you never need to give us any gifts again".

Sorry for the negativity, but there is more of a chance that I can teach a pig to sing B-4 this will ever happen.

Forever there has been discrepency between the US based Mexican Consulate and the regional INM. So I doubt this can be true. Though the policies have been streamlined in 2009 so that all documents are maintained centrally (supposedly) and you only need to provide changed documents on renewal. I don't know if this has resulted in actual streamlining. And I would not count on it.

I have been getting my FM3 renewed in Ensenada by a lady named Aida but it cost me 200. I know if I did it myself it would be only 100 or so. As you all know the Ensenada immigration is really screwed.....
My place is in San Quintin...I was told I had to have mine done in Ensenada....because that is their district, or something like that.
If anyone finds out for sure about San Diego....please post it.....it sure would be nice to pay less.....Thanks..

You need to have it stamped at the border within 90 days of issueince.

Since FM2's have travel outside of Mexico restrictions, I doubt very much that you got the right information.
It would mean that you could renew yours without setting foot in Mexico for years. Highly unlikely !!!

We just renewed ours through Blance Medina in Ensenada. Her fee is $125 for a married couple, plus, whatever the fee to immigration, which was $2588 pesos. The only documents we had to give this time were bank statements. Last year we also has to provide a copy of our marriage license for renewal. So there may be some streamlining going on. I need to see her again later this week so I will ask her about renewing at the Consulate.
