volaris shuttle in San Diego

hdn2mx - 8-12-2009 at 07:26 AM

I know this subject has been discussed before, but I couldn't find anything through the "search" option.
I'm just curious if anyone has utilized the Volaris airline shuttle in San Diego lately. I've used Volaris in the past but had parked my car in Otay Mesa at the "Otay Mesa Park & Shuttle" there, that was sweet, but they have since closed.
But I believe Volaris offers a shuttle from San Diego but I have not used it and I'm not sure the best way to access it from Orange County. Also any parking issues??????
Or does anybody have any other thoughts on getting to Tijuana Airport by leaving their car in US. Thanks for your time. RT

The following is copied from the Volaris website. Apparently there are two shuttle options in the SD area:

Tijuana/San Diego, CA. - $200 MXN* Tijuana Airport from/to Downtown San Diego, CA. And $140 MXN* Tijuana Airport from/to San Ysidro. This service is being offered by the CRUCERO ground transportation company to Volaris clients traveling to San Diego from the Tijuana Airport.

I've looked into getting a shuttle from San Diego to the TJ airport. There's one (at least there used to be one) from the AMTRAK Station downtown.

I took the Volaris shuttle about a year ago, and a friend used it last April -as far as I know it hasn't changed. You board it at the Sante Fe station in downtown San Diego which is the AMTRAK station. You have to be there 3 hours before your flight - cost is around $15 or $20 US.

Not sure where you could leave your car parked near the AMTRAK station. If you have a friend in the area who could drop you off at the station, that would probably be the easiest way to do it.

Check out the Volaris website or call them to be sure. www.volaris.com.mx

Volaris is now using the Crucero bus line, which runs out of the Greyhound bus station on Broadway. If you get on the Volaris website, you can download the shuttle schedule, however, I always call first, to get the latest info because the schedules are not always up-to-date.

I have used the shuttle from TIJ to the Santa Fe station with no problems. In fact, there have only been 1 or 2 other passangers most of the time and the driver crossed at Otay which was super fast ....

The bus is an ex-Hertz shuttle bus.

Took the Coaster from the Santa Fe station to Solana Beach.

The other option is Taxi to San Ysidro then the trolly ... but that is slower.

So, my 1st preference is the bus (if the wait is not too long in TIJ).

Mucias Garcias para todo. I appreciate the input. Just a quick note. Alaska Air round trip LAX to LaPaz around Thanksgiving $450 - 600 bucks +.
Volaris about $150. A little more hassle but when 4 are flying, thats a considerale savings....... RT

not as direct, but another option...

Mulegena - 8-12-2009 at 11:20 PM

There's a direct bus Los Angeles Greyhound - Tijuana Bus Station.

Travelers could go this route and transfer in TJ bus station to another headed for the TJ airport.

Just did it in June and going again in two weeks. Volaris Shuttle (Crucero bus) at Greyhound bus depot on Broadway. Parked at cruise ship long term lot. No hassles, no problems and easier than LAX

We found out that the cheapest way to TJ airport is to park on the US side and ride the MEXICOACH to the airport. Parking is $5.00 per day and you can buy a round trip ticket for $6.00 U.S.

Udo - I looked on the Mexicoach website, but didn't see anything about San Ysidro to the TJ airport. More details, please? What is the fare, how often does it run, etc? Does it go direct from the SY parking lot to airport?

Like you, I fly out of TJ every 6-8 weeks so I'm always looking for better/faster ways to get back and forth from San Diego.

Udo...... ditto, any more specific info on Mexicoach would be huge......
that sounds like a decent alternative...... RT

preston - 8-14-2009 at 03:36 PM

Yes, tell me more about MexicoCoach. I spend USD$12 for a taxi from Otay to the airport (about 3 or 4 miles) and 180 Pesos for the return.

In Mexico City I can go from my hotel to the airport (about 8 to 10 Miles) for 50 Pesos!!!

Is there $5 parking at San Ysidro?

I've never found less than $9.

Thanks,

Preston

We just parked our car at the airport in TJ when we went to Chapala and also to Monterrey. It was just over a $100.00 U.S. for 7 days. Everything was fine Our car was only 2 months old the first time and then just a year old the second time. Even left the computer in it the first time. but it was covered.

Our car california plates. We like having our car.

Another option is to call Gonzalo at 619-405-8984. He will give you door to door service in a nice full size van. It works well when you have 3 guys, bags, coolers, fishing tackle, rod holders, etc. He picked us up at two different locations and dropped us off the same. $80 per person for the round trip. Yeah it's not the cheapest and you do have to wait in the line but it is comfortable and with a bunch of luggage it's great especially when you bring back 50 pounds of fish a piece!:tumble:

pie2mats - 4-12-2011 at 04:25 PM

hello everyone!
well, that's a good way to put it. practicality and comfort is never an option with these service but a guarantee in every ride. have a nice day everyone!

Do not assume the northbound bus will depart the airport any time close to your flight arrival. About three weeks ago we flew north from Cabo to TJ, got off the plane at 9:00PM and bought our bus tickets. Then I asked when the bus would leave, thinking the usual 20 minute wait would be about right. No, the next bus left at 11:30 PM. We got our money back and took a cab to the San ysidro crossing, walked through in five minutes and caught the trolley north to our motorhome storage yard.

All of it turned out perfectly, except for the fact that the storage yard denies access after 10 PM. We just missed it! There we were in beautiful Chula Vista with our bags just looking to get mugged. Thankfully, there was the Palomar Inn just around the corner.

Here's the real deal.

Greyhound and Crucero buses work together. You can get a bus leaving the San Diego Greyhound bus terminal with final destination the TJ airport. The cost is minimal, especially if you get a round trip ticket from Greyhound. You can get a bus trip ticket from Oceanside or from Santa Ana to TJ airport and back. For instance, the price for round trip greyhound/Crucero bus ticket from Oceanside to TJ Airport and back is about $18 USD. The savings is fantastic as you save on the taxi from TJ to TJ airport and back (total $330 pesos).

Parking at San Ysidro is $8 to $9 USD per day in a gated and well lit parking lot. I have seen $5/day lots, but I don't think they are gated or will people in attendance. If you take the Greyhound bus from Oceanside or from Santa Ana or even from Los Angeles and you have someone drive you to the bus station, you will save on parking.

I fly Volaris from TJ to La Paz and back. Costs about $126 to $180 as I wait for the specials that come up about 3 times a year. I take the Greyhound/Crucero bus from Santa Ana or from Oceanside and I have someone drive me to the departing bus station. Cost about $18 for the round trip (Oceanside to/from TJ Airport).

I am a cheap SOB, but I have worked out all the details and I save big time. Parking at LAX is about $12 USD or so per day at parking lot C, tickets from LAX to La Paz round trip is about $450 - $600. That stuff adds up, especially since I go to La Paz about 8 to 10 times a year. These costs are unacceptable to me and I won't pay it.

If you park in San Ysidro, walk across the border, then take a taxi to/from the TJ Airport, that will cost about $8 USD/day for parking, $27 for taxi plus tip. If you drive your car across the border and park you car in TJ, then you will have to get Mexican auto insurance and that will cost about $10-$14 USD/day plus the cost of the parking per day.

Caveats: If you take the Greyhound/Crucero bus, check to make sure that the bus is scheduled to arrive at the TJ airport about 2 hours before your flight departure. Check your return flight arrival time on the return flight to TJ Airport arrives aboutat least 1/2 hour or so before the bus leaves the TJ Airport for the US/Mexico border AND make sure that you allow 2 hours from Bus departure from TJ to bus departure from San Ysidro to your other destination as it may well take that long to get across the border to meet your next bus departure from San Ysidro to your next destination due to a long wait at US customs to get across the border. Lately, I have run into some trouble with Greyhound/Crucero (particularly
Crucero) as they sometimes leave a little early or a little late without notice nor with any explanation.

Take the bus.

Mitch, excellent post. I think what screwed us up was the change to daylight savings time in California had taken place, but not yet in BCS. So our flight arrived an hour later California time than when it usually would have. The bus probably left half an hour before we got in to TJ.

I just assumed............ Dopy me!

Lesson, check and double check the schedules.
